I also watched and enjoyed Sailor Moon when I was very little, but looking back it's a pretty awful localisation. Bad voice acting, butchered dialogue with a lot of changes to the script and plot. Pretty typical for a lot of old anime localisations though. When I tried the original Japanese version a few years back, I was surprised at exactly how much they had changed, and how smart/mature the show was. Although I still got bored after about 10 episodes. The repetitive stock transformation footage didn't help.

Still, if you prefer the dub for nostalgia, that's fine. I don't really remember enough of the dub to really have fond childhood memories of it.

Then there's a show like Yugioh which is just straight trash regardless of which version you watch, but at least in English the dialogue is so-bad-it's-funny and has a sense of fun about it. Also Dan Green's voice is just beautiful.

There's a new dub of Sailor Moon that's a lot better.

Also, fun fact, Dan Green started out dubbing Hentai.

I assume that's for Sailor Moon Crystal. I did try that when it first came out. I don't know about the dub voices but I didn't find the show itself great. Poor animation on top of other issues. So yeah even if the animation was overhauled for the blu ray release I'm meh about trying it again. Would probably hit up the manga if I was interested in following the story again.

Edit: Wait I just found it's actually a new dub of the original show. Interesting.

Yeah they went back to re-dub the original show at around the same time as dubbing Crystal using the same VAs.

I watched a few episodes back when it was way easier to get Hulu outside of the US, and I recall it being pretty decent.

We had the US opening for Dragonball Z except for a bizarre run of episodes where they decided to use the Canadian version, not to mention Goku suddenly sounding like a California surfer for a few episodes when training Gohan to go Super Saiyan :dread: . Growing up with the dub I have fond memories of that version, but having sat through the series with the original audio it pisses all over what we got from a great height imo.

I've also finally finished the original Gundam 0079 and started Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam now. There is a very big improvement in animation and if what I hear is correct there is little-to-no repeat animation throughout the entire run of 50 episodes. :datass:

Yeah I remember Cartoon Network UK suddenly switched from the Funimation dub to the Ocean Dub for the Cell Saga.
And then for some reason they used the Blue Water dub of GT rather than the Funimation one as well.

How anyone can prefer Japanese DBZ over the Funimation dub is beyond me though. Grandma Goku renders it unwatchable after Sean Schemmel.

Goku rocks in Japanese, because it shows Goku for the idiot he is. The English dub makes him too much out to be a hero when that's not what he is.

The Japanese shows him as a grandmother with a voice like nails on a blackboard.

The western version makes him sound a like a tough guy, which he obviously is, but at the heart of him is a kind of bumbling family man and I much prefer that depiction of him. That if nothing went wrong he'd be a family man doing everyday things, as opposed to the western version which is someone who's only looking after his family whilst he waits for the next fight to come along. The true Goku is closer the latter, but I prefer to see him depicted as the former.

*checks BBC weather*

23°. Pfft.

But I otherwise fully agree with staying hydrated throughout the day and not just because it's hot out.

Here in Swansea it doesn't look like it'll be so bad today. And it rained a couple days ago. Maybe summer will finally end soon :toot:

I thought I was ready for it to end too and then it rained for 2 days and so now I want it to be hot again

Being caught out in the rain was bliss though

Finally got done with book one of Rurouni Kenshin. The ending was complete BS on so, so many levels! Bullshit #1: Climax to be continued in book 2, even though: Bullshit #2: There's a tonne of pages left within book one in to which it could have fitted, but instead of which is inserted the author's first comic starring Kenshin, which would be kind of cool if not for the fact that Bullshit #3: The author chose to alter the original dialogue of Kenshin's first showing so that he sounded more like the character we know.

So. Much. Stupid.

But other than it was great seeing all the wee differences between the show and the source material; I always get a kick out of seeing and reading Kenshin's surprise sound (oro?), but then I miss his trademark flute theme when he's about to step in to end an injustice... Anyway! Onto book 2! Next week. Maybe.

So, leading on from the platelet meme earlier, is anyone else watching Cells at Work? I don't think it's necessarily good but it is cute and fun. Red blood cell is really likeable, and the platelets carry every scene they're in (so cute! ). I like the Higurashi macrophage as well.

I just wish it had more slice-of-life adventure and less action, because the fights are really, really weak. It's going for comedy battles like Gintama, but it's like the creators haven't clocked that Gintama's fights were imaginative and, well, funny.

EDIT: But I realise I am critiquing an edutainment show aimed at children which seems kinda harsh in retrospect. :slol:

MHA season 3 has been reasonably enjoyable so far. Also slowly getting through the Land of the Lustrous and (finally) the Black Lagoon Roberta's Blood Trail OVAs after finishing the first two seasons of the show years ago. Old but gold.
