I don't think John Terry is an out and out white supremacist with Hitler tattooed on his arse and so in that respect he is not a racist. I also don't think he has a problem with black people in general, he seems to genuinely get on with black players at Chelsea/England (other than Rio for obvious reasons at the moment). So a racist, no I don't think so.

But by calling somebody a "black banana split" he is certainly guilty (allegedly) of racial abuse and should be punished accordingly. The only possible reason to add the word "black" to "banana split" is to increase the level of abuse (banta ).

I don't see what he's trying to achieve with this 'sarcasm defence'. I think people would think more of him if he owned up to a lapse in judgement (even if it wasn't) and apologised. But then, he'd have to be a decent human being for that.
