If it's a night flight and the lights are out, I don't give a gooseberry fool how tall the person is behind me. The seat's going down and I'm getting some sleep.

People like you deserve to have these put on the back of your seat.

Yeah, because wanting to recline your seat at night when the lights are out is, like, totally unreasonable.

Some people feel uncomfortable about a million things though.

There comes a point where you just have to do what's reasonable to most people - and on a night flight when the lights go out, putting your seat back and getting some shut-eye is generally considered the done thing.

Surely saying that people who want to recline their seat should pay to upgrade to Business Class is missing the point? They are using an option known to be included in Economy Class seat?

Why don't the melters who think it is unreasonable to recline at night on a red-eye upgrade to business class? As I said, you know it is an option in Economy Class, so using this knee defender thing to take that option away seems a bit off. The option is there so people should be allowed to use it.

It's less obnoxious at night, but I would still be irritated if someone was literally crushing my legs no matter what the context.

I'm short, though, so I don't really care. Plenty of legroom even on the most cramped of flights or trains. 8-)

By the same merit though, the option is also there to use a knee defender to stop the arrogant pricks who don't have the manners to ask first. Night or day, asking the person behind you is just basic good etiquette.

You don't really have to ask at night though, do you?

I mean, really? When the lights go out, it's pretty much expected that most will recline their seats. That's what the option is there for, and 90% will use it when they try and sleep. Again, it is what you expect when you fly overnight on an Economy Flight.

Daytime, then yeah, you should ask.

Day or night, yes you should ask.
And if the person says no, then tough gooseberry fool on you and you'll just have to deal with having your seat upright the whole flight. That or move/swap seats to sit somewhere else.

Plane are manufactured for an internal market and the average male height globally is only five foot seven. Guess what height I am. I suppose this might be the reason I don't have a problem with plane seating. It has been designed for my proportions.

In all the flights I've been on at night/lights out, I've never seen anyone ask the person behind them if they can recline their seat.

I'm 6"1 and it's definitely frustrating when people put their seats back because it absolutely does restrict your knee room. However, if it's a long haul flight through the night I really don't think you can have any complaints.

If people want to sleep then they've got every right to put back their seat, it's a feature of the seats after all. Personally I've never found it any easier to sleep with the seat back than when it's upright, the difference is fairly minimal.

Should you though?

I mean, this is an option that is on every Economy seat the world over. I have to find a plane where you can't recline your seat. It is there "for your comfort", as the airlines say, which basically means to help you sleep. It is expected that you will recline during the night. It is expected that the person in front of you will recline. You know what you are getting when you book an economy ticket. You know what options it includes. You know people will almost certainly recline at night.

At daytime I would ask, but at night I wouldn't really let someone refuse to allow me to recline and try and get to sleep - what that is what the option is for. Simply because they don't like it. I might turn round and say: "I am reclining my seat now" but I don't ask at night.

As I said, every Economy Class seat had this option. Everyone knows what they are getting and it is expected people will recline at night. You can't/shouldn't stop people trying to sleep. They have bought the same ticket as everyone else, and at night practically everyone else is reclining.

Wow, look at the passive aggressive card they suggest you print out and hand to the guy in front of you:

Can't ignore this. If I declined the seat I wouldn't be sitting in it lol :P

Also, yes the base doesn't move but the entire back portion of the seat is usually hinged to the base so if reclined, your 'space' is infringed and can result in lack of leg room. Being 6'3" I can confirm this as fact although I never seem to have a problem as most people don't recline and if they do, I have asked them to put it slightly more upright, and keep asking untill it's in the default position or more often than not they are greeted with tapping, kneeing and obnoxious moving of my table and loudly comenting on the "banana split in front".
