Yooka Laylee

I battled that final boss again and again, but the fight was just too damn drawn out, and the controls for it were just too fiddly.

In the end i just gave up and headed back to playing CoD.

There are only 2 games I can think I've given up on.

Pikmin was the first. The mechanics were fun, but I just kept messing up a day, redoing it, and then messing up again until I got frustrated and gave up. Tried it again a few years later and got the same result, accepted it wasn't for me.

For the second I got Fire Emblem Sacred Stones on the 3DS Ambassador Program and decided to give it a shot. Got a few missions in and enjoyed what I played, but just ended up falling away and giving my attention to other games. I gave it a second shot too, same result.

Not literally the last one I gave up on, but Mother 3 was the latest game I really tried to get back in to before deciding I really couldn't be bothered.

I have tried to play through this game several times. I think in an earlier playthrough I was around halfway in. The story is good, the way it's told is good. The game is charming and I like the quirkness of the characters and the world. But I find the actual gameplay/battle-system so boring.

I gave up on Pikmin when I played it years ago (like maybe 10 years ago or more now), traded it in for another game. But I went back to it a few months ago and I loved it. Pikmin 2, not so much.

I just stopped playing Sleeping Dogs after that bit
where that wedding is destroyed and any character I cared about is murdered.

Just couldn't be bothered with it after that, which is a shame, because I loved what I played.

Cuphead. I got past the first island, then I tried to take on the food themed one and went "Bugger this".

It's a beautiful game and I love everything about the music and aesthetic, but bloody hell did I find it hard.

Did you play this on the easiest level? If so, you need to do it all on the harder level if you want to do the finale after island 3. Didn't find this out until I'd completed island 3 and have since been playing through the bosses at the harder level in the hope of one day completing it. Just finished all of the bosses on island 2. Island 3 is up next when I can muster the strength to continue.

Yes?

I just dont count giving up as giving it a break (yeah sometimes a 5 minute break becomes a 5 year one) I count giving up as if I ever think of playing that again I will go all Hulk on it..

By the way nice name/avatar I loved that dude when he showed up in the old 80's Transformers comics

Yeah i mean we all give up on games and go back to them days, months , years later.

to that extent i gave up on my harvest moon snes game back in the 90s, think it was because i couldnt get the blue haired church girl to marry me

I think it was Yooka Laylee, man was that game just a chore to do after a while. I said to myself I'd return to it after a while, but after a couple of months I uninstalled it as I was just kidding myself.

Steamworld Heist. I didn't like the procedurally generated maps. They dragged the game down considerably. I can't see me going back to it. It's a shame as I loved Steamworld Dig.

I played on the harder difficulty because I heard about that before starting the game and thought I'd rather not have to backtrack through all the bosses. Then I gave up.

Behold the Kickmen

Thought this might be a fun alternative football game, the pitch of it as a football game by somebody that didn't particularly like or understand football sounded interesting and gameplay wise it looked a little bit like Sensible Soccer meets Mario Football. After about an hour and a half of play though I've given up on it, at times it's fairly fun but the mechanics are really hit and miss, when they work it plays okay but often they're quite broken which makes it a really frustrating experience. Silly rules are then added to it which, when combined with the poor AI, often make the game feel totally unfair.

The 'comedy' aspect of the game is pretty dreadful too, primary school esque humour poking fun at football with phrases like 'you did a goal' popping up all over the place, there is the occasional decent parody of football culture hidden away but all that does is highlight what a missed opportunity the script is as a whole.

I only paid about £2 for this and considering that I've had a reasonable amount of play out of it but I still wish I hadn't bothered!

Out of interest, how did the maps make it worse for you? I'm playing through it at the moment and yes, they can be a bit samey but not enough to turn me off it compared to some of the other stuff i've given up on.

I read an article on it ages ago and I was hoping it would be good. From what i've heard so far however I shan't bother.

It seems to randomly generate cover points for your bots. Sometimes, it just doesn't generate enough cover for the 3 or 4 robots you are using. I had two or three missions go really badly because of this, played through them again they were piss easy. It really annoyed me.

I would have preferred the levels to be designed from the ground up.

I do think Steamworld Heist would be better with fully designed maps, but I think it does a good job of them (they are clearly tweaked every level to heavily favour particular layouts, so they are mostly designed).

As you say cover placement can seem the most randomised, but I probably only had myself stuck without cover once or twice in the game. Lack of cover can be worked around though if you play aggressively, which I found the game encourages.

Yeah, I had really high hopes for it but just ended up frustrated and disappointed, the most frustrating thing is that there's definitely a decent game under there waiting to be let out!

Double Dragon 4 - because it was horse sh**e. I love the old school DD games and I didn't want to believe that this was as bad as I'd heard, so I bought it on faith and nostalgia.

My God, what a mistake to make. Very quickly I realised what I;d done and it then dawned on me that Nintendo don't do digital returns. Money gone forever and couldn't be deleted off my Switch quick enough.

Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition (PS4) - Mightly impressive at first, but then I suddenly found myself becoming increasingly bored by it all. Gameplay wise HZD doesn't really do anything to make it stand out from the crowd. It's not bad by any stretch, just a bit 'flat'.

While I may have picked up the complete edition I never got as far as the DLC.

“But I don't want to go among mad people,” Alice remarked. “Oh, you can't help that,” said the Cat: “we're all mad here".

Not sure if it counts but The Last Guardian has been in the library for well over a year without being played, I intend to complete it - but can't bring myself to put the disc in the drive....

Aliens Colonial Marines sticks in the mind of actually being so physically bad I couldn't carry on with it, probably the worst game I've bought on release, Omerta City of gangsters l I just could not get on with at all. It's not something that happens very often though I normally plan my purchases quite well (Aliens a glaring exception).

You should give 2 and 3 a go. They are far more forgiving when it comes to this. Especially 2.
