I have had two of these recently.

Dark Souls 3 on PC because it runs terribly on my PC. Doesn't seem well optimised, which is a shame, as DS2 was really amazing in terms of optimisation. It ran fantastically well for me.

N++ because I felt like I was reaching my skill limit with it. Loved it, but the game was becoming pretty tough for me ( I made it to the last row of the solo content). I have a feeling I will be back to it.

Horizon Zero Dawn

It's a great game to be sure and it looks stupendous, but the more I played the more I thought "I'm playing Far Cry Primal in 3rd person". Now I realise you can level game Y is much the same as game Y across many genres, but here the similarities were so strong in some areas, (and that I'm still playing Primal) that I just didn't feel compelled to continue.

Maybe go back to it another day, but for now HZD has gone to the bottom of the pile.

Forza Motorsport 5 - Xbox One

I've been trying to go back through this as i bought it ages ago and didn't give it much time, and while i'm close to finishing the core races in each series i really don't care anymore, especially compared to gt sport.

Its not the car or track count that's the problem; for me FM5 is where the rot set in, all caused by a simple and subtle change in how cars and races are set out. Before you'd have races which were open to various types of car, be them european, turbocharged, FR etc. From this onward each car is silo'd into its own subset with only the class championships opening the doors, meaning you have a lot less flexibility. Also the races themselves are meaningless: a series of 2-4 lap sprints with no connection to each other beyond their grouping as a series. There are no tense title-deciding races, no ebb and flow of seasons, only push for the top 3 to get gold and move on. Sure GT Sport doesn't have that either but it doesn't try to pretend thats what the single player is, but at least attempts to teach you racecraft and driving skill, something forza seems to lack.

At this point fm6 is bigger and better with pseudo-championships for each series so this is completely avoidable now the dlc has been mothballed and the rivals servers seem to be no more. Its taking up a lot of space on my xbone so time to clear out.

Pretty much the same reason I ditched FM7. It's just so boring to play.

Lords of the Fallen (PS4)

I do quite like this, even though it is obviously a Dark/Demon's Souls rip off. From the little I've played it does feel like there is more of a story than the games it tries to copy.

The voice acting of your character is not very good and there is plenty of screen tearing, but neither of these things were enough to stop me playing.

The problem is, like the games it copies, the difficulty. I'm up to the 3rd lord (in the graveyard) and it is too frustrating to continue. The lord itself is bad enough, but the minions it makes are the icing on a gooseberry fool cake. I've tried using the spell some have suggested that creates something for them to attack but they don't all go after it and it doesn't last long enough. The weapons I have are underpowered (you really need 1 hit kills on the minions to make this a fair battle and that doesn't happen) and I've spent several hours levelling up to use higher damage weapons, but these all take longer to weald and are therefore pointless.

The only way I can see me getting past this is spending significant hours going back and forth killing the low level enemies to level up with each new level taking longer due to the increase of experience required.

I would have liked to continue this game but it feels inaccessible and as a result, I'm not having fun.

FM6 is better in this regard, its a progression of 5 or 6-race championships increasing in power as you go, each with a range of vehicle classes you can use for them. As such you have to place highly in the overall series to progress rather than just each race on its own. I'm going back to the earlier forzas (1-4) but intend to give 6 more time in the future.

Assassin's Creed Unity. Xbox version ran like dogshit. The gameplay sucked and I was getting nothing from it. Such a shame as the era it is in is really interesting.

Soma. Gameplay was threadbare, and I didn't find the story compelling enough to continue with it. I have yet to play any of these types of games that I have actually liked.

That's a shame, but I totally get where you're coming from.

As I say I like LotF, but like with all these types of games (Souls, Nioh etc) I prefer to play it in chunks as it's easier to digest. If I get stuck I just walk away and leave it for a few weeks. On returning I usually find I can get past the obstacle barring my progress and push on with the game.

I think I might return to it in the future, but I'll have to read up to see if there are any cheats or tricks to lessen my frustrations.

Goldeneye Reloaded - Xbox 360

This was going well, but gradually got more and more annoying - the levels got more padded out with guys popping up out of nowhere, almost right in front of you sometimes. I persevered up until the very last level, which turned into a multiple-stage "defend Natalya while she does a computer thing" with no checkpointing between each stage, so if you die from being shot from all over the place in a brightly-lit and visually noisy room you have to start again, with her yelling about needing cover and not being able to do the thing if the terminal is destroyed.

That was grinding my gears, however immediately after that it turned into a firefight in a room that's on fire/partly electrified, so you have to fight through that while avoiding the insta-death traps all over the place. From here it goes to an open labyrinthine structure with almost no cover, so enemies can flank around and underneath you to shoot you from all sides. While a big solar laser thing takes pot shots at you.

Oh, I forgot to mention that since the end of the Natalya thing there has been a timer ticking down and the game checkpoints at the start of the open catwalk bit, so you're stuck with however much time you had when you got there the first time if you don't want to start the whole level again.

Not even going to look the ending up on Youtube.

Dragon Quest VII on PS1. I really didn’t want to give up on this first because I was enjoying it to begin with and second because I was around 80 hours in but I just had to. The difficulty had spiked ridiculously, it became a huge grind fest and just wasn’t fun anymore.

The boss I was stuck on was just ridiculous, he would put my entire party to sleep and then poison them in his opening turn leaving them virtually defenceless. When they woke up I’d have to heal everybody before I could could get any attacks in and when I attacked everything missed. Absolute strawberry floating joke :x

Sonic Mania. I thought I liked Sonic but maybe not.

The fast bits feel like the game is playing itself and the slow bits are gooseberry fool.

Think I've given up on Fez, pretty much. I'm about 50%-60% through. It's got to the point where my time spent playing it consists of backtracking / wandering around trying to work out how to get to where I want to go. It's boring and tedious, and no fun at all. With limited time to spend on playing games, this isn't what I want to be doing with that time. Shame as I like everything else about the game.

WWE 2K18 (PS4).

It is fun and for a while it took me back to the days of playing Wrestlemainia 2000 on the N64 while working in a local indie. I'm not a huge wrestling fan though, so it was only a matter of time before I kicked WWE 2K18 to the kerb.

Dead Rising 4 - I dunno why, tbh. It's certainly solid enough with no technical or other kinds of glaring faults. (And I really enjoyed mowing all the Zs down when in a vehicle!) I guess I just preferred the original's setting and cartoony look, that or maybe I *really* don't like the combo weapon system.

Everybodys Gone to the Rapture - meh, got bored like 10 minutes in, too slow for me. looks lovley but voice acting and script seemed average
Firewatch - got to like day 60, stuff is starting to happen but the expansive confusing map is getting to me. might come back to it. loved the voice work.
GTA V - bought too many Ps4 games, this got dragged under. fun to drive about in, love the fake-facebook company.
No Mans Sky - got bored early on, watched like 40 hours of gameplay, maybe that killed me lol. not much to do?
Zelda BoTW - started on Master Mode, very hard enemies, gave up, also gave up on normal mode ive explored a lot of the map but nothing grips me.
Elite Dangerous - got too confused with this game, shipped out to a very distant space station for big profit, costs too much to get back. Confused.
Elder Scrolls Online - played this straight for like a month, got very invested in this MMO-hole then realised too much of a time sink, having no friends on PS4 doesn help ive been playing it like a single player game

I GIVE UP ON ALOOTT

Though I did just finish Life is Strange on PS4, one of the best games ive played in a very long time. Voice acting is great, writing takes a dip after Episode 1 but alot of it is very well written, especially things like the Diarys and Text messages.

Monster Hunter World - Sluggish and unsatisfying combat. Maybe not the best game to get into whilst I have a particularly shitty cold? *shrug*

If you count giving up as well just stopping playing it could be any number of games... I tend to play stuff for a bit then wander off forget it exists and then come back to it and finish it later sometimes even years later... If you mean what I mean by given up on as in slammed the bugger down and said sod you never again then the last game I did that with was X-men Wolverine Origins on the xbox 360. I had really been enjoying the game but I just couldnt kill the end boss and it was driving me crazy.

I read it but I can be a bit thick at times lol

I just dont count giving up as giving it a break (yeah sometimes a 5 minute break becomes a 5 year one) I count giving up as if I ever think of playing that again I will go all Hulk on it..

By the way nice name/avatar I loved that dude when he showed up in the old 80's Transformers comics
