Thought this might be a fun alternative football game, the pitch of it as a football game by somebody that didn't particularly like or understand football sounded interesting and gameplay wise it looked a little bit like Sensible Soccer meets Mario Football. After about an hour and a half of play though I've given up on it, at times it's fairly fun but the mechanics are really hit and miss, when they work it plays okay but often they're quite broken which makes it a really frustrating experience. Silly rules are then added to it which, when combined with the poor AI, often make the game feel totally unfair.

The 'comedy' aspect of the game is pretty dreadful too, primary school esque humour poking fun at football with phrases like 'you did a goal' popping up all over the place, there is the occasional decent parody of football culture hidden away but all that does is highlight what a missed opportunity the script is as a whole.

I only paid about £2 for this and considering that I've had a reasonable amount of play out of it but I still wish I hadn't bothered!

I read an article on it ages ago and I was hoping it would be good. From what i've heard so far however I shan't bother.

Yeah, I had really high hopes for it but just ended up frustrated and disappointed, the most frustrating thing is that there's definitely a decent game under there waiting to be let out!

Double Dragon 4 - because it was horse sh**e. I love the old school DD games and I didn't want to believe that this was as bad as I'd heard, so I bought it on faith and nostalgia.

My God, what a mistake to make. Very quickly I realised what I;d done and it then dawned on me that Nintendo don't do digital returns. Money gone forever and couldn't be deleted off my Switch quick enough.

Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition (PS4) - Mightly impressive at first, but then I suddenly found myself becoming increasingly bored by it all. Gameplay wise HZD doesn't really do anything to make it stand out from the crowd. It's not bad by any stretch, just a bit 'flat'.

While I may have picked up the complete edition I never got as far as the DLC.

Not sure if it counts but The Last Guardian has been in the library for well over a year without being played, I intend to complete it - but can't bring myself to put the disc in the drive....

Aliens Colonial Marines sticks in the mind of actually being so physically bad I couldn't carry on with it, probably the worst game I've bought on release, Omerta City of gangsters l I just could not get on with at all. It's not something that happens very often though I normally plan my purchases quite well (Aliens a glaring exception).

You should give 2 and 3 a go. They are far more forgiving when it comes to this. Especially 2.

I'd definitely be up to giving Pikmin 2 and 3 a go as the core gameplay was still fun. If I see 2 in CEX I'll probably get it. Might even be able to go back to 1 if I get better at the game.

I had similar issues with Pikmin too. I started out really enjoying it but it just got way too hard for me. I had the same problem with Little King's Story which I really wanted to like but relatively early on; maybe a boss or two in the difficulty just got silly and I lost interest.

EDIT: Now I think about it I didn't get on with Overlord either... I guess this style of game just isn't for me.

Time for me to join the club - got to the fight with the queen, put it on the easiest difficulty to just get through it. I got her down to 1HP and then everyone got pinned and killed.

Metal Gear Solid Rising: Revengeance

Hot off the heels of finally playing and finishing MGS4 I thought I'd give this a whirl as I had got it free on PS+ years ago.

I knew it was a totally different type of game, and actually quite enjoyed the prologue and first level, but very quickly it became tedious and I just asked myself why am I even bothering.

Revengeance is unironically better than everything released after Snake Eater though

I really enjoyed Revengeance although I did get a little tired of the brutal violence toward the end particularly during the final boss fight and after MGS4 I really didn’t like the direction they took Raiden in.

Difficult to compare cross-genres, and Snake Eater is the best MGS game, but I would comfortanly put MGS4/Ground Zeroes/V/Peace Walker all above revengeance

Revengeance captures the metal gear spirit much more than those games.

4 literally is only saved by Ocelot

4 is peak MGS, it opens with you changing between live-action in universe TV channels and only gets stranger from there. Revengeance has some great stuff in it but it owes a lot of itself to MGS4 if you ask me

In terms of being a sequel, it does, yes.

But it also fills the villain quota much more rigidly and memorably than 4, which is 60% of MGS outside of 2, which is memorable for something only it can uniquely perform. 4 also loses points for trying to explain MGS2. Vamp being explained as 'lol nanomachines' is a strawberry floating sin

No-one remembers anything about Beauty and the Beast corps, but every member of Desperado is great, even Khamsin

I see constant retconning and flip-flopping between science explanations or the paranormal as vital to the MGS brand. And that vamp/raiden split-screen fight in 4 was ballin'.

You're right about the Beauty and the Beast corps, but then MGS4 also had the metal gear mech fight and the ocelot fist fight.

MGS4's finale is rightfully the highpoint of the franchise, it's just the rest of the game that's meh

Whilst there was always the paranormal in MGS, MGS2 as a game thrives on the 'is this actually happening' on several levels. Fortune being fairly normal (with a bit of mysticism thrown in at the end) and Vamp both being crazy supernatural helps with this, as a form of escalation from Foxhound to Dead Cell. Vamp should have just been packed away and left as a mystery, if they wanted the events of 2 to have actually happened for MGS4

I'm still not sure if Ocelot was actually possessed by Liquid or if he just conditioned himself to think he was.

I'm pretty sure the canon explanation is that both actually happened
