The last game you gave up on and your reasons + some gooseberry fool about MGS

We have a "Currently playing" and a "Last game you beat and your score" topic, but what about those games that were started but never completed? This topic is here for you, have a little rant about the game you gave up on, free from judgement *

This is a topic for the "last" game, not your gaming history of failures and certainly not for people who have never played the game or even owned the format it runs on to take cheap shots against a format they aren't interested in.

To get the ball rolling, Valkyria Chronicles Remastered (PS4). I originally bought this on the PS3 and found it so-so, but not having any trophies felt it didn't have enough to keep me interested. When I heard there was going to be a PS4 remaster with trophies, knew this would be something I would pick up again in the future and when the price became acceptable (about £16) I did.

What don't I like about this? The fact it is massively story driven and too much story between the actual action. To be clear, I'm not dismissing this because it is story driven, but because it is a gooseberry fool story told in the way that would have been acceptable on the SNES 25 years ago. The script is strawberry floating cringe worthy and the music is happy SNES music (also strawberry floating annoying). The whole thing feels childish which given the 16 age rating is a little surprising. ...and don't get me started on the strawberry floating pig with wings.

When I played this on the PS3 I probably did around 1 or 2 chapters. On the PS4 I put in around 5 hours, getting up to chapter 7. Sega have had the last laugh though, no trophies on the PS3 version and after completing chapter 6 on the PS4 version, not one strawberry floating trophy.

* You will of course be judged and informed why you are oh so wrong.

The last one I gave up on was Civilization IV, I got the Civ complete pack on Steam a few years ago and eventually got around to playing it. For whatever reason it didnt click with me, I cant explain why, I just couldnt get into the flow of the game for whatever reason. I immediately fired up Civ V with pretty low hopes that it would change anything but I was hooked instantly so I dont know what it was about IV that it didnt draw me in.

I have a feeling I may be updating this fairly regularly, Im slowly getting through my Steam backlog so there are times where I go through 2 or 3 games before actually sticking with one.

This gonna be gud.....

I'll start with Persona 4 Golden. Must have put 10 hrs or so in but seriously wtf? I know everyone says it's the best game on the Vita but not for me it ain't. It's been a while since I last fired it up and I can't see me doing so anytime soon if ever.

Can't recall now exactly what I didn't like (blocked its memory obviously!) but I knew right from the start i was going to struggle with it.

There have been many games which i've just stopped playing but the most recent and memorable noping out was Sunset Overdrive. I found the movement/combat system completely unintuitive and couldn't stand getting meme'd at by a bunch of smug assholes. I think I had just defended the orange stuff maker for the first time and was going out on a "collect the things" mission, which is still gooseberry fool however much the game claimed it was only doing it ironically etc. The guy kept sounding off in my ear every 30 seconds about "hey, remember to go find those things I asked for #YOLO" or some gooseberry fool and that was me done for good.

Philistine.

Mafia III
Didn't give it much of a chance, may yet go back to it down the line, but what little I played didn't impress. Bar the menu. The menu was slick af:

XCOM 2
Uhmuhguuud the load times. :dread: :fp: :dread:

Aragami
Yeah, it's old skool stealth, but I don't recall old skool having unresponsive controls.

Just recently, like a fool, I decided to give Dark Souls III a go on my PS4. I felt optimistic. Determined.

:|

Predictably, things very quickly went horribly wrong; there was some very choice language involved, regrets (of course) and that familiar, crushing self-humiliation that, as a gamer, I have come to know so very well over the years.

I thought it best to put the game away and never think of it again. Just like I did with Bloodborne. And Dark Souls II. Etc. For me, some games are best left as noble aspirations; nice ideas, if realistically wholly unattainable goals, after all.

I also gave up on P4G. I was pretty far in (I'd unlocked all the characters except the last I believe) but it was so much of a grind. The two distinct gameplay types of visual novel adventure and RPG dungeon crawling are not integrated in the slightest, with dungeons that are overly large and repetitive, and would be much better played in small bursts but that the game pushes you into doing in one whole slog because of the limited time system which makes anything else inefficient. Worse still are the multitude of random quests that rely on small random drop chances in dungeons to complete, which further lengthens the time spent in them.

The time limited system also feels overly restrictive and basically makes completing the game without missing most things massively reliant on having a guide. I like it in principle but if you're not going to telegraph where events will happen and when then you should really give people a chance to explore so they can find them themselves. As it is most things were passing me by and I didn't like that.

And finally while I was interested in the plot it is super slow paced and full of needless filler. I put in maybe 40 hours and the plot basically didn't advance at all. I like the mystery set up but wanting to uncover it only appeals for so long.

Basically the game should have just had no RPG dungeon parts at all and been much of the filler cut out.

Tales of Zestiria. Loved all the tales games but just could not get into this one and i think its because I can't gel with the battle system

Rayman Legends - Couldn't pass a level and I can't be arsed to fanny about working out which of the characters I'm meant to use on that level so it can do one.

Super Mario Bros U - The bloody thing wont auto-save for gooseberry fool so if I get pissed off at a level and think "nope thats enough for now" I end up loosing a load of progress. Am in the first world at the moment because of this.

Mario 3D World - Just drifted away from it really.

I have a few notable games that I have did this with.

XCOM on the 360, I found it too stressful and I never went back to it. I have the PC version now (someone bought me it and the expansion), so I will get back to it on that platform.

Dark Souls 2. Played this originally on the 360, got utterly pissed off at the Shrine of Amana and turned it off. I recently bought it and beat it on PC, it was decent but still a little disappointing to me.

The Witcher 3. I didn't like this game and couldn't understand the almost universal praise for it.

Psychonauts. Meat factory. Literally one of the worst bits of level design I have seen.

Dark Souls
I just don't have the desire to keep replaying the same bits of levels over and over again trying to beat it. That, combined with the sporadic save points and re-spawning of enemies after saving, just meant it got incredibly tiresome.

Tomb Raider Anniversary
I was largely enjoying this, bar a few frustrations here and there, until I got to a particular boss. I had a couple of attempts, couldn't be bothered, but knew it was beatable so figured I'd try again a bit later. Saved and quit, but when I next loaded it started me WAY back, meaning I essentially have to do an entire level again, which I couldn't be arsed with.

tl;dr, I hate re-doing gooseberry fool that I've already done.

 same here. I often think to myself, does anyone actually like doing the same bits over again? I will often mention this in between the swearing at games "Why the strawberry float do you think I would want to keep doing this bit again"?

A eurogamer article about being bad at games/playing on easier difficulties includes a quote I've taken on board:

The thing I like most about video games is the way they offer new worlds to explore, and experiences to share. I'd like to enjoy these in full, especially if I've just parted with the best part of 40 quid. But when you live with the inescapable knowledge that our finite time on this planet is constantly slipping away with each sonorous tick of the giant cosmic clock of death, who wants to spend four hours getting past that hard bit with the lasers?

Fallout 4. Again.

Downloaded this to play on my upgraded PC after putting about 100 hours into the PS4 version and I'm now pretty confident I'll never finish it. It's just...dull. There are occasional blips of decent story or gameplay, and the world looks lovely, but it has none of the charm of previous Fallout's, or even other Bethesda games.

I rarely give up on games now. Firstly I don't buy as much as some seem to and tend to pick things I think I'm going to want to finish. Secondly I'm determined to get my monies worth with them and I'll play through terrible parts in order to able to say I've done it. Also because I want to form the best opinion of a game I can. That means experiencing as much as I can. I cant even remember the last game I properly gave up on. Probably Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz (it seemed fine just didn't grab me). No it might have been Zack and Wiki. Yes thats probably it. I just got frustrated with a section (dont remember what) and didn't want to cheat and did go back. The not wanting to cheat part is always an issue for me. Nowadays I probably would have pushed past that point. Heck I finished Dark Souls and its DLC. Parts of which I'd have got more joy from actually self harming.

Before that probably Metroid Prime 3. Fetch quest ahoy. Way before that the same happened with Prime 1 and I gave up on Resi 4.

Also depends when you consider something finished. I recently "gave up" on AC Unity and Until Dawn. But I'd finished the stories and was trying to go and collect more but felt the life draining from me so moved on.

Last game I gave up on - "All of them"
Why - "Because I probably bought something more interesting at the time and never went back"

I have a problem, maybe this thread is the first step in getting help...
