Did not like anything about this at all. Dull story, dull setting, dull gameplay and truly awful, generation-worst combat. I mean that last one, I have not played a AAA game this gen with combat this tedious or unrewarding. A massive disappointment.

Trelliz wrote:Max Payne 3 - PC

I bought this years ago and for some reason it didn't work, now it does and I'm just not that into it - maybe I'm getting old but a grim and gritty modern day tale of kidnapping, extortion, betrayal and graphically shooting people in the face just does nothing for me. I definitely preferred MP2 with its quasi-supernatural elements, analogous TV shows running in the background and the general new york noir style to it.

I think it was the R* patented "10 minute cutscene-2 minute gameplay" style that I bounced off of with this. They were so, so desperate to tell a gritty, realist story that they forgot to actually make any gameplay segment longer than 3 minutes.

I actually thought it picked up significantly towards the end. I remember playing this from start to finish upon release. Different strokes...

Oh it does. But after 10 hours, about 5 of which were actual gameplay, I was done.

I don't know if it's just me, but it also got really bloody hard! A section in a police station about 2/3 through.

It's so, so strawberry floating cheap. It's not hard because it forces you to adapt, it's not hard because you need to be savvy, it's hard because it spawns enemies behind you at random junctures and forces you to constantly spin around like an explosive catherine-wheel

Bioshock - Got bored with the setting and the story very quickly
Dark Souls - Got bored with the combat.

I very rarely give up on a game. I just don't buy games normally I don't want to play.

Max Payne 3 was an utterly shite game. Story sequences bored my tits off. Gameplay was clunky and the level design was crap at times.

That actually describes a lot of Rockstar's output.

I've tried to go back to the original Borderlands several times after enjoying the Tales game, but they're so mechanically dull with very little story to them at all. I'd rather have a much more focused and linear singleplayer game set in that world telling the same story than what it is.

I also gave Headlander a go from the Adult Swim games humble bundle and enjoyed it for a while but after about 5 hours i'd just checked out; i'm not a huge metroidvania fan and this has been the least unforgiving so i think i'll swerve the genre as a whole.

Deadly Premonition: Director's Cut (PC/PS3)

In a special 2 for 1 deal I have given up on this on both formats. Originally I was playing it on the PC but there is a bug that won't allow you to use a controller (the camera just constantly spins). Surprisingly, lots of people complaining about this all around the internet but no fixes. I did try playing with keyboard and mouse but it was horrible. So I switched to the PS3 version but there the performance was very poor framerate wise. Graphically it is a very poor game anyway and although it did look interesting, I just can't put up with the PS3 performance. If one day someone fixes the PC controller issue I may return (although probably not as I don't know how I'll ever hear about the fix).

I do want to comment on the beautiful water early on in the game. It looks amazing, it is just a slab of blue with no detail whatsoever.

Yes, but a topic is needed to decide the order of series from best to worst.

Livelock - PC

This game is functionally solid with a semi-interesting trans-humanist premise of fighting to restore humanity after the end of the world, all the time inhabiting a massive robot, however its thoroughly boring to play - upgrades are limited and almost completely linear with little gameplay variation and no loot skinner box mechanic to keep you plugging away.

Dishonoured 2. Just couldn't get on with it. I thought I'd give it a try even after abandoning the first one; misguided I know, but I believed I may enjoy it more as it was actually designed for the current generation. I didn't find the combat fun at all, I appreciate it's meant to be a stealth game, but it's arguable that a first person view isn't suitable for such a game. I think the peripheral site offered by a third person view makes games in the genre far more enjoyable and when it does go wrong taking on multiple enemies is a pain in the arse. I appreciate that I wasn't very good at the game, but it didn't offer me any incentive at all to want to get good. A real shame, as I know it's very well regarded, but it will be getting traded ASAP.

I quite enjoyed Lords of the Fallen, it is most definitely Poundland Dark Souls however.
