Our very own thread on it must be 193 pages of people saying how awful it is, then. Thought so.

That tutorial level is just too savage.

zXe wrote:Not the last game. But one I feel bad about but it killed my motivation. MGS V Phantom Pain the Mother Base Quarantine mission/chapter. So there's an illness going round your base and you have to manually search through your crew (there's a gooseberry fool tone of them at this point in the game) and work out which soldiers have this illness based on clues from the initial victims/sufferers in the medical bay/wing. Now when I first got to this part I had like no idea what I was meant to be doing really and soldiers kept dropping ill and dying if I recall correctly. Anyway I search online about it and find out that it's normal to lose like 40% or more of your mother base crew as well as losing any current developments you had going. When I saw this I just gave up because i'd invested so much time collecting resources, it seemed like a slap in the face. And I was just like ugh... cba to go through this.

You can get through this with minimal loss, if you haven't already lost loads of them...

Quarantine every Kikongo speaker, then race through the next two or three missions. You'll know when it's over. At that point it's a single click to put them all back in the relevant places.

Thanks, I'll tr and go back to finish it. Love the game overall, but this part I struggled.

There is so much to like about this game, it looks incredible, the writing is good, the open areas are exeptional but I've started to find the trial and error gameplay, piss poor melee combat and awful/lack of map has really started to grate. I love this type of game, loved the first and started loving this but I haven't enjoyed any of the proper 'levels'. This game has introduced an awful new enemy type in the clockwork soldiers and I'm on level 8 which is littered with them and one hit kill machines, one of which has completely hindered my progressed with the only way to carry on to try and find an underground passage with only an onscreen marker. I'm so close to the end that I wanted try smash through to the completion but after working my way through the mansion only to randomly get killed and find the game hasn't saved any of my progressed, I've decided it's time to call it a day.

I felt exactly like you did the first time I played D2. I gooseberry fool all OVER that game. Then after I had a little hissy fit I went back to it a few months later, and started over from scratch using Emily on high chaos. Let me tell you man that gooseberry fool is FUN AS strawberry float. Domino ability is just fantastic, and having a bit of knowledge of the maps made it even more fun. So much so that I eventually wound up loving D2 possibly even more than D1. I would honestly say just take a break for a bit, come back, and play as Emily and just don't give a strawberry float about stealth. Stealthy is probably the least fun way to play Dishonored. Some of the later levels are incredible too.

Yeah I went back after being pissed off. I having being playing a stealthy high chaos up until now so I just sacked that off and massacred everyone with grenades, mines, pistol, etc. I got a ton of money and it was fun bit it didnt actually help me in any meaningful way as the way to complete the level was to open a safe that was in a toom with one of those Tesla coils. Somehow I managed to get in there without getting electrocuted but it still feels like gooseberry fool design. I'll see it through to completion now but I can't help but feel a bit disappointed.

I had another one of these there now.

Fire Emblem Shadows of Valentia. Got to the last fight, saw that it was all the things I hated about the game, quit. Tonnes of unit spawners. Check. A boss that does an attack that hits all your characters. Check. Another boss who can only be hit every four turns. Check. Annoying map design with a bloody choke point. Check.

I don't have the patience.

^ Yeah I remember finding that one frustrating too. Have felt similarly about a few of the Fire Emblem final fights and it's like I've had to cheese my way through/rush it or sacrifice nearly everybody just to get the job done. Almost never quit a game before the last fight though, but I did do that with Persona 3 which I felt a bit odd about doing since I had already poured about 70 hours into the game (but I completed the PSP version later).

More recently, I gave up on Devil May Cry 2 (HD collection version) about only an hour and a half in. It's a really bad and boring game. Large bland areas with enemies that barely attack you and sometimes don't even bother moving towards you. Laughably all while energetic rock music plays.

Granted, I was also having controller issues which made some parts tricky to play (necessitating me to resort to the keyboard to get through them), but even now that I have a better controller I'm not motivated to go back.

After a long segment where I was forced to slowly kill some enemies with guns (because I couldn't reach them with melee attacks) with little resistance, I decided I wasn't going to waste my time on the game anymore.

Motorstorm (PS3)

I picked this up when I rebought a PS3 and never really gave this a shot, and good lord it hasn't aged well. The framerate is pretty poor to begin with but just dies at certain points - the handling is even floatier than I remember in Pacific Rift. For some reason when you crash the camera spends what feels like forever watching your flaming wreck fall apart while everyone else goes past you. The environments are extremely brown and lack the visual variety of Pacific Rift onwards. I'm happy calling this a day and moving on having experienced the series' roots.

Earthbound. I hit one difficulty spike too many and made the realisation that i simply wasn't enjoying myself anymore as i was always anxious about when the next brick wall would present itself. Maybe i just cant do JRPG's anymore, or maybe EB is a particularly frustrating one.

Zelda: BotW - Stepped away from it for a while with the intention of returning, however I have recently come to the conclusion I wasn't having that much fun with it and don't really have a strong desire to return. While I loved the temples and shrines, I found the open world fairly big and empty and the combat (particularly the breaking weapons) somewhat of a chore.

Nuclear Throne - PC

I hate giving up on games but this is just strawberry floating annoying. It is a rouge like game which means when you die, back to the start you go. Unlike other rogue games though, nothing carries over so you are no better off on the 100th time you attempt it. I did get to the last level once but ridiculously, I've never achieved the same feat since. A game that started with gooseberry fool graphics but fun ended up being a repetitive, frustrating game with gooseberry fool graphics.

MGSV - found it incredibly boring and just didn't think the open world mechanic was suited to this type of game. I preferred the linear, heavily cutscened MGS.

I'd say it is, yes.

I finished Earthbound and did enjoy it overall, but at several points I did feel like giving up. The game is still held in high regard but I feel like in this game's case nostalgia paves over its faults for a lot of people. But of course, a lot of people also don't mind or even enjoy the punishing RPG.

Also feel like its lasting appeal is down to how unique the game is. Nothing else is really quite like it. Mother 3 comes pretty close, of course, and it's also pretty dark at times, but Earthbound has more of an edge and a bit more subtlety. The atmosphere is so good and the game would often make me laugh and - well, not quite cry - gave me feels.

I played it a couple of years ago and don't remember it brick walling at any point, apart from knowing the trick to the final boss.

That's somewhat reassuring - thanks. Now i'm feeling guilty for giving up on it though :fp: . I suppose its not like its going anywhere mind.

I gave up on Mother/Earthbound Zero years ago. Even with a Game Genie code to multiply XP it was still a very slow game.

Gave up on Earthbound after about 10 hours. It had some cool ideas in it, but it never really grabbed me. It felt really dated overall, and I wasn't having any fun with it.

It is nowhere near the games I regard as classics on the SNES.
