Best thing at the MS conference, it looks a little like they've made Flashback for 2017/8

Yup, one of the best looking games at the show.

If you go their website and scroll to the bottom, you'll find a link which lets you play the original flash version. ( :slol:  Um, I've clicked on it a few times but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to launch it.)

Intriguing game. When I first saw it, I thought "yawn more pixel art Indie games" but in motion with the 3D and lighting. It's a thing of beauty.

:( Turns out the dev was/is a Gamergater.

His views changed. I wonder if it was before or after MS showed interest.

I realised he probably had French tweets people hadn't caught:

Image

(the tweets he's replying to have been deleted)

1. The only racist I see here creating a racial hierarchy because someone is black or white here is you.

2. The real racists are the degenerates of your kind who see everything through the prism of race and gender.

(The next tweets are in the context of an "anti colonial summer camp" in France for POC which did not welcome the participation of white folk.)

Image
Tim1. Please tell me you're not defending the summer camp, Baptiste.

Baptiste2. I 200% do, and I really dislike seeing everybody up in arms about it. "Oh my god, the oppressed are organising!"

Tim3. Wow, you've totally bought into the rhetoric of oppression and state racism. Disappointing.

(he then suggests Baptiste read an article he links)

Image

Baptiste4. I read it, it's mediocre and shallow. Whether or not it chaffs your butt, institutional racism exists and is still a reality.

Baptiste5. Obviously, people who don't live it scream when say that, which in itself justifies the existence of a camp where speech is protected.

Tim6. That's anti living-together. I miss the 90s when I was a kid and we were all mixed and never thought about colour or religion.

And, re: Zoe Quinn

Image

I don't know if you're aware, but it's a hot topic. Zoe Quinn was sexually harassing men all while crying sexism.

Unless something major happens, I'll make that my last post in here.

I think I'll judge the game on its own merits actually.

Exactly. I purposefully avoided the whole GamerGate thing -two indignant sides both shouting at each other, both shouting into the wind.

The Last Night looks amazing. Yes I'm sick of pixel art style, but this at least does it a bit differently. It's not trying to present itself as a game from 1988. It has more modern effects and animation, so the pixel art is just as a stylistic method of drawing. So blatantly inspired by Blade Runner that I hoped it was a game set in the universe, but well timed as there is the new movie. A nice surprise from the Microsoft conference, this indie game impressed me the most and I am seriously looking forward to it.

And don't forget that Anders Breivik worked on The Last of Us. We still played that.

I never did, actually. But I think that was more to do with not liking the look of the game than the writer's (was it the writer?) politics. The problem with this one is the lead dev's politics make up part of the actual background to the story.

Venom: One side for equality, the other taking issue with it. Yes, they really were as bad as one another.
Ignorance truly is bliss, eh.

HSH28: I initially took the same view until I read up more on the game.

The pixel art used in the fashion it is, is very off-putting for me. My eyes have to continually adjust to the mishmash of styles. Loved the setting though.

Isn't that judging the game on its merits, if there is something objectionable about the actual game then that's an issue that might make me not want to play the game, if there's just something objectionable about the views of the person making the game then not so much.

It looks very much like his objectionable views are at the centre of the game.

I was talking about the game that actually gets released. I'm willing to hold my judgement till we actually know what the final version of the game is, rather than judging it on some tweets from while it was in development.

Loved the look of this last night. It's the one title that stood out for me. Very excited to play it.

Also, I don't care if it was made by Hitler, Theresa May and Josef Fritzl... If the game is good, the game is good!

Objectionable other than feminists caused a dystopia? Such a story could be possible, of course, but this one is written by someone who takes issue with people who want gender / racial equality. I don't need to experience the game mechanics to know I'm going to find something hugely objectionable about it.

I really don't want to argue this  He's not getting my money and I'm happy to leave it at that. You may be cool with the game as long as it plays well and that's your call and I'm fine with it, too.

edit:

HSH28 wrote:I was talking about the game that actually gets released. I'm willing to hold my judgement till we actually know what the final version of the game is, rather than judging it on some tweets from while it was in development.

Okay, I see what you're saying. Yeah, for *me*, not judging anyone else and the decision they decide to make, that's still not good enough because whilst his publisher have made excuses for him, there are recent social media posts where he spews the same kind of gooseberry fool. So whilst the game's story may change to something more traditionally cyberpunk, the fact is I'll know what the original basis of the game was, and that it is highly likely the dev retains the world view which lead to its creation, and so I cannot bring myself to play it.

If other people want to carry on this discussion then please feel free to do so, just let's be civil about it, eh.
