Sorry, I meant Gamebuzz (autocorrect! )

Gamebuzz wrote:Gamebuzz caught up with Richard Mcready, Lead Level designer for Naughty Dogs upcoming apocalypse Rompathon, The Last of Us 2: Fallen Father.

The afternoon started off with Gamebuzz being shown a level set in an old paint factory, The building is on fire and slowly collapsing. The factory is also flooding.

"Ellie starts off this mission with no weapons, and severly injured, so must slowly limp her way around the factory avoiding all enemies at all costs". Richard told us.

"Being discovered means instant death, so you need to be carefull, however you can't be too carefull as you're constantly aware of the strict time limit counting down in the top right hand of the screen

"We decided in the end not to include checkpoints. We felt they removed the urgency from the situation and detracted from the flow of the game."

The level finished with a 15 minute unskippable cutscene, interspersed with QTE sections.

Gamebuzz went on to ask if they felt it was risky moving away from the open play areas that made the first game so popular. However we were assured that many aspects of the first game will make it over to the sequal.

"Take Pablo for instance, he's your faithful Mexican orphan friend you meet after Joel dies, I won't spoil anything but things aren't always what they seem"

Gamebuzz was shown a level with Ellie fighting Pablo on top of a crumbling water tower, with rain and lightening striking the tower. The water tower is also on fire.

Will there be Clickers in the sequal?

"I can neither confirm nor deny" Richard remarked with a cheeky grin, "There may also be a few suprises for any robot fans out there..."

The last of us 2: Fallen Father will release late 2019

I'm glad Pablo is back. That's 90% of my fears assuaged.

Here's an actual interesting article on the violence: https://kotaku.com/the-last-of-us-part- ... 1826781044

That is very interesting:

“We’re making a game about the cycle of violence and we’re making a statement about violent actions and the impact they have on the character that’s committing them and on the people close to them,” he said. “And our whole approach is to say, ‘We want to treat this as realistically as possible.’ When you stab someone—if you watch reference videos, which we have, it’s gross and it’s messy and it’s not sanitized like you see in most movies and games. And we wanted to get the player to feel that.”

The idea, he underscored, was “for the player to feel repulsed by some of the violence they are committing themselves. It felt like that is the most honest way to tell this story.”

Fun in video games, I suggested to Druckmann, often goes hand in hand with virtual violence. “This might be a semantic argument,” he replied, “But we don’t use the word ‘fun’ with The Last Of Us. We say ‘engaging.’ It needs to be engaging. If the stakes are real, if you are invested in the character and their relationship, you’re going to go through and commit these actions that might—and should be—at times making you feel uncomfortable to progress in the story, to see what’s happened to the character and at times to struggle with their motivation versus your moral line.

“The kind of stories we tell, with strong specific characters, we like that at times you’re not in line with the character. It kind of makes you question philosophically: where do I stand on these things? And that was a big part of the first game and a lot of the stuff we learned from the first game we’re applying to this game.”

I think this is where I start to agree with Hime and think this game simply isn't for me. I understand what Druckmann's saying here, but I disagree with that sort of design philosophy. I don't want to play the 40 hour long equivalent of Hanneke's Funny Games, with the game constantly turning to wink at me and ask "Are you enjoying this? Is this what you wanted?"

Is this real?

I've not heard the game called that before.

The release window is pretty big news too but not seeing it elsewhere.

I mean, why would someone even post that?

Is that an attempt at satire?

I pity anybody that doesn't find it very amusing.

I like when people do funny and random things when they've got to much time on their hands.

It reminded me of gooseberry fool Monty Python.

Don't be. If there were no SMP there'd be no Classic Monty Python; sometimes you have to throw it all at the wall to see what sticks and improve from there. And tbh, some of it did draw a chuckle from me.

Another great analysis, focuses more on assets, lighting and animation unlike Digital foundry who are obsessed with frame rates and resolutions.

Love these NXGamer videos

In the latest episode of Expert Mode, we sit down with The Last of Us's Bruce Straley to discuss the game's defining moments.

It's a 13 minute interview/discussion.

I wonder how much of the game you can play just by using stealth. It's something that hey added to Uncharted 4 but obviously these games have set pieces where you're forced to use combat regardless.
