Watched it twice. Wasn’t sure what it was the first time but after watching it the second time I think the message was the the fireflies are gong to strawberry float up your gooseberry fool fam.

That was possibly the worst trailer I've ever seen.
Last of Us was certainly dark but that was just needlessly brutal and had none of the character of the I expect. I'm still getting it day one but if that's the direction the game is going I'm not sure I'm going to enjoy playing it.

Yeah it’s not as if Joel did anything like that in the first one. Oh wait - he did.

Interrogation scene - knife in the knee?

Or Ellie repeatedly macheting someone in the face?

This trailer was 5 minutes of women being tortured.

Yeah I saw it. The first one was a brutal game at times. It was consistent with what’s gone before.

The difference was there was clear context which this just didn't have.
I know time is limited but at least give some context if you're going to show stuff like that.
Lastly I expect at least 1 of the main people in the game (although to be fair I can only barely remember 2 faces from the game so I may be horribly wrong here) to be in a trailer and the trailer to have at least some link to the first game.

I only worked out it was Last of Us 2 when the music kicked in in the last few seconds which is surely kind of gooseberry fool for a trailer? Maybe I'm wrong and that's how game trailers work these days.

All that’s missing is the context. Otherwise it’s entirely consistent with the first game.

You’d think considering the feedback from that one demo they did of the first game (“Joel [...] blasts the stranger in the face at close range. He dies in a seeping pool of blood. This scene plays out on a huge screen at Sony's pre-E3 press conference. As the shot rings out, the crowd roars its approval“) they’d maybe try and advertise the game with something that wouldn’t give people opportunities to write more articles about how it “fetishises violence

It’s like they don’t understand what the people who want to buy the game want to see. Nobody bought the Last of Us for its brutality.

The problem is without the context it's just watching 5 minutes of women being tortured which doesn't make for a fantastic trailer in my opinion.

No it wasn’t.

I don’t think it was the best trailer, mainly due to missing a familiar character and the lack of context. The reaction in here though is just bizarre.

For what it’s worth I don’t think it was that great a trailer but being shocked at the content is astonishing if you’ve played the first game.
Oh and it isn’t five minutes of women being tortured - get a grip.

It's all just setting tone, really. I've no doubt the trailer's primary goal is to be abrasive and make you feel uncomfortable and shocked, and now we're all talking about it. The game is, like the first one, going to be full of horrible people doing horrible things. The world of The Last of Us is harsh and brutal and unfair, same as it ever was.

Even if you found the intentionally-hard-to-stomach scene too hard to stomach, there is still some merit in it. Namely, the snippets of the story, a glimpse of some new protagonists, and a look at Naughty Dog's new tech. The thing looks absolutely incredible, and I'm looking forward to experiencing more of the world, even if I found this trailer to be a bit of a cheap trick.

There's a Polygon article where the writer is having a completely predictable nervous breakdown about the violence and the misogyny.

Julia Alexander at Polygon wrote:The violence is particularly upsetting as it features the assault of women. Violent attacks on women, many times for perfunctory purposes, isn’t new. The Killing Joke saw the Joker torture Barbara Gordon in a statement that reinforced the notion that gender influences violence.

That's a bit sexist! In a world of equality isn't violence bad whatever the sex of the victim? (In the real world yes I would think it horrid to have this violence to women but it is a game) Talk about taking everything and turning into political garbage. Sometimes I think these writers have an article already written and then find a game to fit their view of the world. A user gives this quite sensible reply:

Arbiter V reader at Polgyon wrote:The other thing that is irritating. In one hand you we have the complaints about not enough meaningful women in video games across the board. Which is warranted – in the past protagonist characters fit a very narrow build. However, in expanding the gender and race will give you violence toward that gender and race… you CANNOT have it both ways.

I don't want to validate the clumsy article but... the game is set in a violent world and there is lot of violence to men including Joel, the violence comes not from misogyny but from it being a dangerous world. The bottom line is this game is a sequel so you already will know if it's something you should avoid. It reminds me once about this article in the UK edition of Premiere (a defunct movie mag). It had an article about Pulp Fiction praising it for it's style and content and story but criticising it for the violence, the language, homophobia and depiction of women! Venom's advice 'Don't buy an apple if you want to eat an orange.'
