I honestly don't know. Taf was posting pics so I thought I'd have a go. :D

I'm honestly looking forward to the multiplayer more than the single player. If they can somehow manage to replicate the fun for the new game it's got a real shot of being my game of the year.
Even if they just use the old maps and bung in lets say 8 more and make the mechanics of the first game available it will be well in the top 3.

Finally caught up on the trailer.

A little surprised at the reactions.

1) It being The Last of Us wasn't a complete surprise I didn't think - the strings early on hinted pretty hard at what it was.

2) The woman was hilariously understated about her 'wings' being clipped. Would've been more disturbing (and realistic) if she reacted as if she'd just had her arm shattered and not as if she'd just had a chinese burn. The initial thud was gruesome but the ensuing calm was a little funny.

Still, I'm sure the game'll be grand.

Neil Druckmann from Naughty Dog sits down with Insomniac Games' Ted Price to discuss trailer reactions, The Last of Us, narrative vs gameplay, and the drive to create something meaningful.

Just imagine the reaction if they said the game was available now on PSN with boxed copies being sent out next week. I think the internet would crumble under the weight of people starting the download.
It would be an instant E3 win for Sony.

Really looking forward to playing online with you and Fade again, the original is one of my favourite multiplayer games of all time.

I'd like them to polish it as much as possible though.

On Monday night I really hope to see improvements to AI, the original was really impressive in this area, but very inconsistent.

Joking aside it's incredibly realistic, arguably the best facial animations I've seen yet in a videogame, the tech they're using is amazing.

Well that's unimpressive, the graphics look last generation and they've toned down the violence. I will not be buying this pile of gooseberry fool.

You're on a roll with the nonsense posts this morning!

The graphics were sublime but I do not like the tone or portrayal of violence at all. As Parksey pointed out in the conference thread, ND seem to be treating the violence as a brand identifier this time round, 'Look at how serious and mature our game is with all this violence!' The original game was nowhere near as explicit as anything in that trailer and was special because of the writing and excellent character work. The latter was definitely on display here in the intro and outro, but that gameplay sequence, thematically, did nothing for me.

Hmm.

I think the difference in the first game going from the very small snippets we've been presented with of the second, is that you were often stumbling upon events after they had happened. Not just the bad things but good things too. There was a sense that something good/something terrible had happened here but at a time before the player arrives. You would see scenes of great violence but you'd seeing the relics of it strewn across the scenery and piecing together what happened in your head.

How many times did you enter a building and Joel or Ellie would comment on what they thought had happened there? How many times would you find a document that hinted at a grisly fate and then see little hints towards it as you progressed through the environment. Or found the result yourself later. Very often, the player was not an active agent, participant or spectator in these events. Just a curious bystander making their way through, but with another goal in mind.

I actually played through the game for the first time this year, half in March, half just a week or so ago. Off the top of my head, I can't remember that many violent scenes, certainly nothing explicit as in that trailer. And when I say "explicit" I don't mean in a sense of being rude or outrageous, I mean as in the fact it's blatantly shown and spelt out to the player. Bar the random times you club infected/bandits over the head with a pipe or something, I can think of:

When the two brothers die. The younger one is shot when he's infected and the older one's suicide is pff-camera/it cuts away.

When David gets bitten by Ellie and has his fingers broken. Pretty mild.

When David gets stabbed repeatedly by Ellie. It's framed so that you only see Ellie's movements.

A few random innocents get mown down by the bandits ' machine gun thing

Marlene being shot at point blank range.

An example of how you know great violence has occured by never get shown it, is

with David's group. You never actually get told they are cannibals if I remember correctly. Ellie confronts David about it and if memory serves, he gives a pretty washy answer. But you earlier have found a document detailing the meat they've "hunted", you see a room with loads of neatly followed clothes and shoes. And then late you see bodies actually hung up. I feel like a similar scene in the sequel would have involved seeing it in the act,of seeing someone killed. Perhaps that might be more gruesome for a second, but the way the original does it is more eerie and unsettling.

It actually normalises it more than just trying to shock the player. For David's group, it's just become mundane and routine and a way of life now. A system they operate.

Of course the in-game.combat is violent, but that definitely serves a purpose. The crunching, violent combat makes you feel each hit. Not only in the force of the blow but also what it's costing you perhaps in surprise, in exposing yourself to other enemies, and I guess also what it's costing the main characters each time they kill.

As I said in the conference thread, I think TLOU is a very slow, melancholic game. I think it's very reflective and nostalgic. I think a lot of that is due to what I mentioned before about always being a bystander to things. Always coming across events after they've happened. By effectively being a wanderer, trying to go from A to B with a certain goal in mind, but being waylaid by circumstance.

As an addendum to that, Druckmann has stated that the original game's underlying theme was love. TLoU2's is hate.

Hmm.

Visually stunning, but will I be buying TLoU 2?

With so many games already finding their way on to my buy list I'll be honest I'm not all that fired up for it.
