Without a doubt my favourite Zelda game. It was just so different from all the other Zeldas, both in terms of story and overall mood. Not to pimp my own stuff about, but I just wrote a retrospective thingy on it here.

I remember Miyamoto saying that Twilight Princess would be the last Zelda of it's type, but I'd love for the next one to me much more like MM in terms of a more darker and mature story.

In my opinion Ocarina of Time was the more important game but Majora's Mask was the better one, it just had so much character.

Discuss.

I hated it. It had none of the charm of the previous Zeldas and the 3-day thing was annoying as strawberry float. The whole "darker" thing is the domain of american teenagers, and does NOT fit into what Zelda should be, IMO.

I never liked the 3 day thing either. My brother loved and has actually been playing through it again the last week or so. I may get around to giving it another chance over the summer, depending on my employment status.

Hated Majora's Mask. Zelda games are about exploration. The three day time limit, made me feel rushed and Zelda games are not made to be rushed.

I'd say Majora's Mask is as bad as The Adventures of Link.

Ocarina of Time
Link to the Past
Link's Awakening
Twilight Princess
Wind Waker
Seasons
Ages
Phantom Hour Glass
Legend Of Zelda
Majora's Mask
Adventures of Link

Would be my order of favourites in the series. Zelda is one of my favourite franchises though.

I love Majora's Mask, I too prefer it to Ocarina. It oozed character and atmosphere, moreso than other Zelda's, past and present. I loved the three day interface, the way you could follow characters around their routines and see their lives unfold in those last few days of their existence was magnificent, plus some of the stories within were absolutely excellent. The aliens attacking the ranch!

Annoyingly I've lost or misplaced the Expansion Pak for my N64 so I can't play it (or DK64) until I either find it or get a replacement. Shame as I could really do with visiting Termina again, if only to roll around as a Goro and swim as a Zora.

My thoughts exactly! I suppose if the idea had been used in an IP other than Zelda, I wouldn't have minded so much, but it was so contrary to what Zelda should be about, it just didn't sit right with me. Nintendo had an idea, then played it safe by putting the Zelda name to it.

Majora's Mask was a fantastic game without a doubt and completely lived up to the expectations I had of it.

But Ocarina of Time impressed me more.

Many people call MM a "darker" game, I thought OOT was darker though. I mean, waking up after seven years and finding that the town that was lively before was completely deserted except for some re-deads? Seeing the castle back and realising Ganon has taken it over but your unable to reach it? The Spirit Temple?

Pretty dark stuff, if you ask me.

That three day limit in MM on the other hand was so generous, there never was any real danger of the moon crashing down. Meanwhile you'd just frolic around following dancing girls or postmen or severed arms that want toilet tissue...

I preferred Ocarina of time. But it was great how they had the same graphics character and control system but then skewed it with the three day system. I really loved it. I loved the interaction with the characters too. The two games were both marvellous for different reasons.

A friend of mine completed this only recently while I've had a practically untouched copy sitting on my shelf since it was released (tried my best but just couldn't get into it), but since he's been raving on about it it's been tempting to give it another go. Still think it's crap though, Ocarina of Time pisses all over it.

Hyrule > Indigestion > Death > Clock Town

There's no need to be here any longer than necessary. Let's split up, look for survivors, and get out of here.

I have a gaming blog too. Read it if you wish; if you don't I won't take it too personally. Metro 2033 is shite!

They arguably didn't play it safe at all. Your opinion proves that, as they arguably risked upsetting die-hard Zelda fans by bringing in such a different method of doing things. Putting it in another game could have done the mechanic a disservice as I believe it's still well-suited to the Zelda series, and the zombie-like towns in Twilight Princess have dated much more than Majora's Clock Town. It doesn't quite feel fully alive and organic, but it still trumps even the likes of Oblivion (yes, I fricking know Emperors have been assassinated before, you repetitive whelp).

I appreciate that having a time limit is, perhaps, something that Zelda has never been about (though I'll ignore the fact that, by using Ocarina, you had a really generous time limit which was almost impossible to fudge). But I don't think the idea betrays the series in some way.

I don't even think they idea would have existed outside of a Zelda game either. If you look at what the system probably began as - the idea of time passing and every day not being the same - then it makes sense to see it as a logical evolution of Ocarina's innovative-at-the-time day/night progression.

As for Majora's Mask not fitting the style of the Zelda series? Well, I say it's warped, garish surroundings make it more akin to A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening than the semi-realism of Ocarina. Saying that, as it was always intended to be a side-story using the same engine, it made sense to just refit the characters and world of Hyrule in a slightly-altered setting.

I quite liked Majora's Mask but it remains the only 3D Zelda I haven't managed to finish.

I believe it's inside my N64 with my save stuck just before the fourth temple. I still went ahead and downloaded it from the VC. It might be better to start from the beginning.

It's not exactly the longest of games to play again from the beginning.

Plus you'll feel a curious detachment from the game if you start so close to the end, I reckon. You'll just go through the motions and do what's needed to finish it.

You deserve to refresh your memories, especially as I really liked the Deku and Goron areas.

I didn't particularly enjoy playing as the Deku Scrub. The I remember enjoying the Goron dungeon a lot more, especially the boss battle.
