I think it's the worst 3D Zelda. Shame because it has the best story/characters, with the possible exception of MM

It's like nintendo have completely failed to learn from their previous mistakes, and thrown in a whole load of new ones on top of it. I should be enjoying it since there's a lot to like here, but the shoddy controls, annoying companion, and pointless busywork before I can enter a dungeon is all conspiring to destroy and enjoyment I might have got from this game. I feel like the people who have enjoyed it are playing a completely different game to the one I played. I hope it gets better. I really do. But so far, I hate it.

Some absolute nonsense on the last page, there.

Anyway, I'm cracking on with this still, here are my thoughts so far - good and bad...

Grr.

Whoever playtested the mechanics of link when he's falling, needs to be fired. :x It just seems completely random.

I'm not overly impressed with the MotionPlus aspect of things. It seems to go off centre for me a lot, and while I can centre it for stuff like maps and targeting, I can't for flight/swimming/swordplay, which is really frustrating. That said, I love the aiming with the Wii remote, and I don't want to go back to pre-fast Link Zeldas. But part of me wonders whether the whole thing would be better off played with a GC controller.

I hate that you can't traverse the land sections - that you have to go back to the sky each time you want to switch. Makes me feel less like I'm playing a game set in a real 'world' and more like I'm playing a game with distinct seperate levels. Despite the areas being bigger, it seems smaller.

I wish Nintendo had spent as much time on extra and in-between stuff as they clearly have on dungeon puzzles. Some of these dungeons are brill (the Pirate Ship, Ancient Cistern and Fire Sanctuary were all amaze, although I've only just finished the latter). The only dungeon I remember anywhere nearly as fondly from Twilight Princess was the snowy cabin one. But SS's side-quests and extra stuff seems tacked on. Also, previous Nintendo games are renowned for their 'layering', how you can go back to previous areas with new items and discover entirely new things. For Skyward Sword, this just seems to be the Clawshots. Disappointing. :?

Loving the storyline. I hope any future Zelda games really do the same in trying to fill in gaps in the timeline. This game explains loads of the 'traditions' of previous games and their origins; Wind Waker took them to their absolute extreme. So it'll be interesting to see where they go from here.

Ghirahim :fp: :fp:    Just the worst boss battle of all time. Didn't think I'd have to face the strawberry floater twice! The game doesn't seem to detect the direction of your sword swings very accurately if you only swing slightly, or make small movements, which sucks, as not everyone plays stood up with their arms flailing! Half the time fighting him it just seemed like trial and error whether I'd land a hit or whether he'd grab my sword.

Not sure if I'll have the same impetus to re-play this one as I've had for former Zeldas - there are just so many frustrating bits. As it stands it's probably my least favourite Zelda, but that's not to say it isn't a cracking game, because I am enjoying it still. I think.

Yeah, I don't think the first "boss" isn't well done. The Motion+ is a bit iffy on that. I did change direction when trying to hit the strawberry floater and yet he managed to pinch-hold my strawberry floating sword.

I really want to grab the strawberry floater, turn around and shove the sword far up his arse. I would love to see him grabbing that!

The game is structured quite differently from previous titles and it really is refreshing.

I would have preferred more varied environments and it feels a bit Mario Galaxyish imo. However, on the whole it is a brilliant game and makes use of the motion plus controls.

Just on the Lanaryu Flame section at the moment. After this I complete Majora's Mask finally!

The Earth Temple was actually rather good. Motion controls are still driving me up the wall though. What bright spark thought it was a good idea to tilt the remote down to roll a bomb? :fp:

Finished this tonight. OK. Motion controls still bad. Too much reuseing of previous locations. Not enough dungeons. Some overly cryptic and tired puzzles and a couple of frustrating and fiddly bosses. Sparce world. A few nice moments and new weapons, collectathon works ok, but sometimes misses. I want to give this a 9/10, but for me not as good as To The Past, Of Time, Mask and one of the GB games. Perhaps just edges Twilight and Waker. So i will give it an 8/10.

Been playing this some more...

Tadtone collecting

I thought it was extremely clever to re-use the entire environment that way, far better than when I had to revisit the temple in the woods. Really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to this upcoming stealth bit too...

The Batreaux side quests are good fun, I wish there were more of this kind of thing? Not enough side-quests for heart pieces and other extras, but the characters that are in the game are by and large brilliant.

Having to fight the imprisoned again :x Although the third time was the most straightforward of the lot. I'm just not a big fan of the bosses in this game. Koloktos and the squid (which was easy rather than impressive) aside, none of them have been great.

Finally started playing this some more on the weekend after neglecting it for at least a month.

I'm really enjoying it. Just did the first silent realm bit and learnt to swim. That bit is a really nice change of pace and approach.

On to the Lanaryu section in search of the flame. Really different structure and it's good, but it just doesn't feel epic. Feels like the Super Mario Galaxy team got their grubby mitts on this.

The controls are superb though!

I know what you mean though. Maybe if Eldin and Lanaryu were like Faron which is an incredibly well designed big open space, I could have enjoyed it at bit more but they're little more than corridors

Yeah was a joke that comment, but seriously lacks grand scale and certain things like stamina berries and the boat bit come straight from SMG!

Finished this earlier.

Loved the combat, the characters (Zelda and Groose mainly) and the dungeon design was top notch. The world really brought it down though, I hated how empty the sky was and then being restricted to the same three areas. Fi and the harp were both pretty annoying too.

Still a great game though, I'd say it's about a 9 and much better than Wind Waker at least.

Wind Wakers visuals/music and sense of exploration put it firmly above SS for me. It's combat is also far less frustrating

I did love WW on release but replaying it last year made me realise that it's probably my least favourite 3D Zelda. I found it dragged so much towards the end and having to play that song whenever you wanted to change direction ruined the sailing. WW does have some advantages but the quality of the dungeons in SS make it the better game in my opinion.

SS feels more compartmentalised though, with each area and dungeon almost being seperate levels instead of part of a vast kingdom (I see the Mario criticisms now) like TP and Okami were.

Im unsure if this is a positive or a negative, however.

The combat in WW was far to easy. Wait for attack button to glow, press it and win.

Or just use the boomerang to stun them.

It had the best final boss though.

Skyward's finale trumps it for me.
