Is the DLC worth getting for this? Is it useful partway through the main story or is it better left as end game content?

It is definitely worth catching a good 'orse. Don't get too affectionate over Morse cos you will probably find a better one and then feel bad about giving him a cool name like Mocha and leaving him to rot to death in the stable for the rest of the game.

Also there are two kinds of "ultimate" horse for you to discover, although the slower horses do actually have a few benefits - the stockier ones have more health in battles, and the less "wild" ones are less likely to chuck you off if you hit the whip too much. The wild horse's "trust" also deteriorates faster if you run into stuff, get it hurt, or push it too hard and forget to feed it to make it happy again.

Try dropping a bunch of apples or carrots on the floor by your horse, it's one of the magic moments in the game.

Started playing DLC2 last night. Feels good to be stepping back into Hyrule. Complete pain in the arse reconnecting the WiiU. I now have this, the Switch and a BlueRay player sharing the same HDMI port on the telly. Plus a component stereo system, the Mac and two printers all on the same two power sockets!

Over Christmas I've been playing Mario O and what struck me when I started playing Zelda again was just how different, but complete in themselves, the two worlds of these games are. Difficult to explain. It's just the mastery with which everything tiny detail is assembled in each game so as to build a cohesive whole.

Despite putting the best part of 100 hours into BOTW I've pretty much never bothered with horses, are they really worth bothering with?

The horse controls always seemed a bit cumbersome and my horse never seemed too come when called so I just abandoned the idea and conquered Hyrule on foot instead!

Yeah, Morse is history now. Found I was missing a lot of stuff speeding around on him, so I'm walking.

In other news, I spent what I thought was a half hour doing shrines and pottering. Turned out it was 3 hours.

Good game, this.

This is BOTW at it's best-going off to do something with a specific plan, being distracted by a tangent and bam, 3 hours later you're nowhere near where you originally planned to go.

Sure I spent plenty of time forgetting about the horses and after fast travel opens up it's easy to do that, but it's fun to do some horseback combat and gallop from A to B as you can just let go of the controls and hit A and your horse will follow the track automatically. Also protip if you hold left shoulder button you can strafe your horse wherever you want even on cliffsides etc which is useful if you get stuck in an awkward spot.

I avoided using fast travel as much as possible until endgame so horses were very useful for backtracking. It's the best way of playing I reckon, explore as much as possible on foot so that you find as much stuff as possible and can savour the area, then if you're going back somewhere you've been before take a horse so that it's faster than walking but you don't miss stuff that you would with fast travel. (They also make Guardians way easier, all about that gallop critical)

I’ve put in a few hours on this the past couple of days. Done a lot of aimless wandering and running away from these big robots that shoot laser rockets or something, how the hell am I meant to defeat them with a rusty old sword? Very pretty game though, I like how most of the times it’s jusy really chill with nothing but the ambient sound of crickets or the wind.

Edit: also *1 for the Joycons, got along fine with them.

Separated works absolutely fine for this, Mario O etc. It’s such a relaxing way to play! Maybe takes an hour or so to adjust but I use it like this all the time now.

Yeah guardians, for them your shield is your friend. I don't want to go live the answer like but the shield is deffo mightier than the sword.
