strawberry float I love this.

Just finished the final Divine Beast, and this is legit the first big open world RPG where, by the point I can take on the final boss, I'm not itching to run ahead and do it.

I also just found the weird little demon statue who is essentially just a gooseberry fool bank. I presume he would have been useful in the very early game but at this point it's like...'eh?'

You can use him to trade hearts for stamina and vice versa because unlike other games you can't get all the hearts and all the stamina, you choose.

I found that statue fairly early on but haven't actually used it which I think it's down to one of the issues I had with the game in general - it's too easy.

I've never really felt like I didn't have enough hearts or stamina, it never presents a challenge where I had to consider trading one in for the other. It also starts off by looking like it's going to throw some survival game mechanics at you with temperature being a factor you have to manage and consider and so you think there's going to be some interesting gameplay where preparation is required to enter the icy or volcanic regions, a need to create safe points with fires etc. but then it practically throws items and equipment at you that nullifies all of this.

This is not to say that I don't think it's a great game - I've loved playing it! I think I just expected it to commit more to some of the ideas it introduces as I felt that would have really elevated it!

I have over 50 hours in this game and don't have a clue what statue you're talking about

Statue is useful when you're after a certain weapon and need an amount of stamina or hearts to get it.

I definitely don’t think it’s too easy. Even when fully powered up and knowing all the enemies I would still often get caught off guard by a Moblin swing being stronger than I was expecting. Dying doesn’t mean much but that’s a separate issue.

The point about the survival challenge I do agree with though. The cooking and environmental mechanics work beautifully in the starting area because all options are valid and you’re at a set level. When the game expands out beyond the first dungeon or two these just kind of become irrelevant I found. That might have been part of the way I played the game in becoming so immersed in it that I just wanted to see and have everything, which resulted in being able to pretty much breeze through any survival aspects the game has to throw at you. I would have loved a couple of extra survival challenges like Eventide where your progress is halted and you have to genuinely stop and think about how to use the games tools to overcome what’s in front of you.

I don’t know how you can have missed it if you’ve been to Hateno?

It’s not really a spoiler but...
As you go into the village there’s a little boy running about, talk to him and he will take you to a statue where you can trade Hearts for Stamina.

I actually think it's really cool that that mechanic, while at least somewhat important, was signposted gently enough that it's possible to miss it.

I remember reading that the first thing you could do in the game was take on Ganon so I remember, knowing I was definitely going to die, running up to Hyrule and getting completely eradicated by the Guardians.

So I was like 'I'm gonna go get me a job, find some upgrades, and you a dead man!'

60 hours later and I'm heading back in.

....Immediately raped.

Get some Guardian arrows, after getting your arse kicked or using 20 weapons to kill a Guardian they are very satisfying and allow you to farm Guardian parts.

*edit* Sorry, ancient arrows.

Thanks, I've also discovered how good the Master Sword is too, thought I was limited to ancient gear.

Nope, quite a few to find still. Only about 60 shrines too, and I've got barely any Koroks (are people really throwing around figures above 500???)

Then I can get the DLC when I go home in a month (the eShop doesn't work here).

I took the approach of just getting koroks when I saw them without actively seeking them. Got to about 100 over 100 hours of gameplay and that expanded my inventory enough. Did all the shrines and got all the gear but couldn't be bothered hunting more koroks.
