Did you gain access to the shrine at the top of the mountain? and its body parts are used to upgrade things

Got to the path to Zora's Domain last night, considered trying it out before looking at the map...

I turned it off and went to bed

I assume some of the general stores eventually sell some basic weapons? Also those secret ninja travelers are becoming a pain in the arse...

Wasn't as good as a forest themed dungeon with moving block maze puzzle though was it? Eh?

I liked that bit a lot but if you're going to be reductive it was just a very simply gliding mini game.

It is! However the scale of the thing, and the surprise of it, made it a really special moment I think.

Yeah. I went up a little unprepared. I'd heard the stuff people had said in town so knew something was up there. The cold and wolves made it rather hostile. Reached the top and could see this.......... thing. Thought I might have to fight a mega hard overworld boss fight. Which I didn't really want as getting up there had been tricky enough. People had been saying how hard the game was. So I thought it might be massively more powerful then me. This was still very early on for me. Not done 1 divine beast. Then it all happened and I watched him go......

There are no weapons for sale anywhere. However there are some lying around in the communities that have soldiers including Zora and they have good arrows for sale so do investigate. Shrines and outposts are good, I can tell you a few places if that helps? The "secret" good weapon around humans is the rake (and the double edged axe).

And those guys become piss with just some arrows. Just rush into them with something like a lizal boomerang. Then there's the other guys..

I do find that slightly strange, like, ok you can buy arrows in shops but not even a traveller's sword?

I'll try the boomerang next time...

Yeah, it's a bit odd. After beating one of the guardians you can go to the related town and rebuy the reward, but you need a diamond to forge it, which are pretty rare. Hold onto those. But honestly you'll end up with more weapons than you can carry.

Xenoblade X's scale was ridiculous are more detailed in places.

The next game is surely going to be mind blowing if they build on this.

And yes GTA games are like wow nice city bro, I treat them like Tony Hawk's games. Just zero interest in doing anything in it.

The comparison with Xenoblade X got me thinking, X has a much more diverse and often more detailed overworld sure, but it's nowhere near as fun to explore. Any discoveries you make are fairly arbitrary and a lot of the time you find an interesting place only to realise it's swarming with high level enemies and without any actual stealth mechanics you're forced to leave it till later. Then there's the mechs, which on the face of it give you more scope to explore since you can reach more places, but a lot of the time I found myself just flying over everything to the goal because it was easier and less of a slog so ended up not actually exploring anything (and again, finding somewhere you want to explore before you get a mech to be able to get there is a frustrating roadblock). In BOTW on the other hand usually when you find something there's actually something to do like a shrine or a korok puzzle, not just an arbitrary "you found a thing, your completion percentage went up by 0.1%", and there are very few arbitrary roadblocks to exploration other than your own creativity in coming up with a solution (except maybe when it comes to rain).
Obviously two very different games but given a lot of X's promotional stuff was "look at this enormous world to explore!" I was kind of let down by it, whereas if anything BOTW exceeded my expectations by a long way.

Interesting reading others views on the mountain dragon bit. I can't say that bit really resonated with me as strongly as it seems to with others. :(

Had my first proper go on this since Mario Odyssey came out last night, going for a general wander as well as trying to pick off some of the side quests I've been ignoring so far. It's a brilliant game to just arse around in - just pick a direction, exploring and seeing what happens!

I still think it stumbles massively on questing though. Last night I took on two quests, the first was some kid: "please help me, I want to cook apples but I gots no butter!"... It's sold in the shop 2m behind you!!! Second quest was to take a picture of the guy running the fang and bone shop - the only real justification for this being because "he's shady". The reward for this basically being "cheers mate, here's some more strawberry floating rupees which you've already got billions of". Running dull errands and undertaking inconsequential tasks with no narrative heft or meaningful material reward isn't exactly my idea of exciting fantasy escapism

The sidequests aren't particularly remarkable, there is at least one really good one that makes a tangible difference and opens up some good shopping, and another with a good armour type item reward. Exploration and shrines are rewarded better. There are some caves/labyrinths hiding not necessary but interesting armour. The shrine quests are basically your "premium" side quests and the rest is pretty filler, but I never bothered much with sidequests in Zelda games. There's always some quirky one, my favourite example being the flowers on Windfall Island and some other things (not that I would ever finish it, but the figure museum in Wind Waker is bloody crazy). They could use a bit more narrative.. Finding the last (or most hidden) in a series of mythical skeletons is pretty great just because it's a nice spectacle and a bit of an "ooooh" moment.

IMO the sidequests are there to give you inspiration for what to explore/do next. In that sense, actually doing them is its own reward.

Some interesting points there, I cant say I was let down by X though, yes there was a lot more gating and roadblocking of stuff but to me it felt like it made sense with you working towards getting a Skell and I was never short of things to do in the game. I did like the way the scale of the world kept changing, initially it was intimidatingly huge, taking forever to get across on foot, then you get the Skell and you can truck along pretty fast and the world shrinks a bit, then you can fly and you see just how much stuff is hidden above you and the scale of the world changes again. Knowing that Monolith helped on BOTW has me super hyped for what they will do next, Chronicles 2 was too far along in development to implement much of the lessons learned from working on BOTW but X2 (they have to make an X2, surely!) should be able to implement a lot of the stuff that BOTW taught them. Things like gating, rewards, layout of the world, density of content, Im not saying it needs to be BOTW with a big mech but theres definitely aspects they could use in a new game.

The first quest is to teach the player about cooking and combining ingredients. The second quest is to prompt the player to find the Fang & Bone (which otherwise would be quite easy to miss).

Not all sidequests in the game are just disguised tutorials or exploration prompts though. Tarrey Town is a definite stand out, and I also really enjoyed special delivery (where you have to follow the bottle floating all the way down Zora's river).

That was a fab side quest. Genuinely took advantage of the systems in the game.
