Been waiting to play this since it was first announced, and then when it was released last year. Told myself I’d wait until I had a Switch - which I knew was going to be at Christmas - to pick it up. And I’ve played through most of Odyssey first to prolong the pain having played loads of Skyrim in PS4 in the last few months. So far it’s everything I’ve been hoping it would be  so many moments already where I’ve thought to myself “I doubt this’ll work, but let’s just ohmyfuckitactuallydid.”

Quick question: is there any way of diving into water? I’m trying to get to a chest in a shallow-ish pond and have tried jumping in off a nearby ledge to no avail. Seems like there should be a way of doing it but I feel like I’m missing something obvious.

I haven't tried this but my assumption is to use the freezing rune, can anyone confirm?

Do the first 4 introduction shrines that you will know how to get the chest.

Cheers, so I’ll be coming back to that in about... 30 hours at this rate. 8-)

You'll be given a way to get them.

Apparently the guide also says scaling is tied to the number of enemies you have killed. It seems to be all I can find searching around.

You can't dive underwater. You'll find another way of getting the chest.

The lack of being able to swim underwater is a silly limitation. The potential for underwater treasure and caves is a staple of RPGs. Sad!

I agree but mostly because I really like the Zora music.

As well as using the powers which have been mentioned thus far (cryonosis and magnesis) you can also blow up any wooden crates to reveal what is inside

I think they cut the swimming by design. You've never been able to swim in generic seas etc, only certain areas, but the fact there is literally no swimming is a bit odd. I think they just couldn't handle it performance wise. You'd have almost two different worlds flitting between a thin line. But not sure why there isn't a single small lake you can explore. There's also no proper caves or tunnels. That's something I'd like the see in the next game. I'm not even that hot on dungeons. Xenoblade X had tonnes of this stuff so Monolith could have handled it and in the caves you could have more enemy types like dodongos or just things on the ground. It's od that there are no creepy crawlies or really any flying enemies besides bats.

Honestly though, I've always found swimming a real pain in zelda games. Maybe only the underwater zora seahorse people in skyward sword was better because of motion controls.

Mine you, there was no swimming at all in Wind Waker and that didn't really suffer. And everyone hates the water temple in OOT.

Think they changed the swimming in MM3D. Cant remember if it was for better or worse.

It is a shame you cant swim under the water in BotW. But the main issue should be Links default swim speed. :dread: and that stupid dash you do. :dread: Just swim faster ffs.

Would have been cool to have some sort of tethered diving in one of the major lakes, be run by an npc or something. Walk alomg the bottom, chart it for them, search for treasures with maps etc.

Finally made it into Hyrule Kingdom tonight having explored most of the Plateau. Had a little poke around a town ruins and took out a couple of enemy camps, as well as stumbling upon my first Moblins (and Rupees!). Was just turning in for the night when I saw the moon was starting to glow red :o going to explore this more tomorrow.

I’m getting so much joy from this game. Love all the mechanics so far - big fan of the weapon degrading system (so far) and am enjoying cooking too, although a ‘saved recipes’ page would be handy. It’s the little moments though. Knocking down an enemy and then stealing his weapon to finish him off; setting fire to a bee hive to scare off a bunch of Bokoblins; just finding new creatures and materials scattered around but not knowing what to do with them yet.

I could get lost in this world for hours. Can’t see me playing much else for a couple of months.
