Part of the joy I had with a dungeon is I could sit down for an hour or so and just tackle dungeon things.

You see that is the part where I might enjoy it but half the time I just feel I can't be arsed, I think that's a key difference for different people, especially those that haven't played all the games or really got sunk into the formula of previous games.

GTA V isn't even the best GTA, let alone the best in the genre.

I'm probably approaching 30 hours played on this and unlike most other open world games by now, I don't feel like I've reached a point where the repetition of the fundamental gameplay loop has started to detract from my enjoyment. In fact, I think I'm enjoying the game more the longer I play.

Haven't even reached a single Beast yet.

They are so vastly different that to compare the two would be folly. But yes, Zelda is better

This is the best open world game ever made. I'll take that over another underwater section with water puzzles.

But I've played an open world game before and they may not have been as good but they didn't have the bad stuff like rain and weapon degradation. I haven't played any other games with Zelda like dungeons before.

Boom. You're right, they weren't. For me, that's all that matters. Is BoTW an objectively perfect game? No. Is it as close as this style of game has gotten? Yes I believe so. Does everyone have to agree with me? In an ideal world, but that is not the world we have so no, they do not.

Now let's all chill out, boot up Zelda and go 'accidentally' drop a rock on some Koroks

Have you played Darksiders 1? Thats the closest other games have got to Zelda dungeons to me. People like to blab on about Okami being like Zelda but that doesn't have anything like a proper Zelda dungeon. Some of the ones in Darksiders are actually really good as well. But I get your point. We have lots of open world games but very few games have things like a Zelda dungeon.

Also I want to add that if the castle is like any dungeon in Zelda then its the ones found in Zelda 1 and 2. But even then you had to find keys to access areas and remember how to navigate it to beat it. But this was way before they "fully" realised them in ALTTP.

Darksiders it the only series with 3D zelda-like dungeons I can think of, but there are a good number of 2D zelda-likes with proper dungeons at least

I do agree. GTA5 is a masterpiece of city simulation and immersion, but as a game there is so much left to be desired.

I played a bit and enjoyed it but my PC is out of action at the moment.

I should point out that I did enjoy the divine beasts but they were so similar that they all mould into one in my memory. I can't remember anything particularly clever, those Nintendo moments that make you smile and wonder how they thought it up. Compare that to the last few Zelda games I've played, ALBW, OoT, SS and MM, There is no comparison to BOTW with the puzzles and dungeons in those games. There are no other games to compare to those. BOTW however isn't that dissimilar to AC, Far Cry, The Witcher, etc. Bring AC Origins into the equation and it's a very strong comparison.

Wades in... Have to agree with some of the criticisms. The overworld is truly amazing. The 'dungeons', ('divine beasts'), are shite. The weapons breakage is shite.

BUT, massive, massive BUT, think how they can build on this. I want seven dungeons as large as the castle, some underground, some in huge towers above the clouds, some in underwater caverns but proper, proper dungeons, full of mind-bending puzzles. No, the castle in ZBOTW was not a dungeon, not remotely, (not sure how anyone could think this tbh), amazing to explore though it was. But they have cracked open a whole new way forward. I'm no apologist for the games failings - they are failings, full stop. But the sense of scale, (and here I disagree with TWA), is astonishing, the sense of really being in a real place, really travelling to places, (finally, finally the bullshit fantasy of ZOOT is realised - sorry but Hyrule plain was a massive, massive disappointment even all those Christmas's long ago).

So, I prefer to acknowledge that whilst the game is truly amazing it has it's faults. Let's not make feeble excuses for the things that don't work. But, going forward from this, keeping the best bits, going forward...... Dream! Dream!

Don't think I've ever said anything else. Its probably a bit less impressive if you've played things like Skyrim, GTA4, Xenoblade etc.

So actually quite an apt comparison...

So, for basically everyone on the planet. I didn't own a console for near enough a decade and still played Skyrim and GTA5. Still impressive though.

That bit gave me shivers cos I climbed up the "wrong" side of the mountain and took me a while to figure out what it was, dat music and it was in moonlight as well.

Xenoblade X's scale was ridiculous are more detailed in places.

The next game is surely going to be mind blowing if they build on this.

And yes GTA games are like wow nice city bro, I treat them like Tony Hawk's games. Just zero interest in doing anything in it.

I meant in terms of what you've said about the world being just too big. That you would have preferred it smaller and tighter.

Wasn't as good as a forest themed dungeon with moving block maze puzzle though was it? Eh?

I liked that bit a lot but if you're going to be reductive it was just a very simply gliding mini game.

I never found out what you do with the thing you get from that. I'm in two minds if I think you should get more information, it's like the problems from Destiny 1 to 2 in that having everything as an icon on a map or menu makes the game more accessible but you remove all the intrigue. I actually think it's quite cool to have this giant world that you might miss large parts of obviously you can seek answers on the internet if you like but you give yourself the option of exploring areas you haven't been to on another play through.

Yeah. The actual gameplay bit is quite simple and over pretty damn quickly. Still awesome and it made the other dragons in the game a crushing disappointment in comparison. That feeling of just seeing them never quite goes away.

I think you could halve the map and most people would still have been impressed. It's that damn big.
