Just ordered the Christmas train with the £10 discount code.

How does the power functions work? I search it online and there are a few different parts. I don't really want remote control functions, just for the train to drive forwards at all times when switched on

How are you getting it to order? I've just got the option to add to wishlist.

Give us some princess minifigs now, dammit :x

So... better that the Death Star? I've just rebuilt mine (a lot more fun since I didn't have to do the stickers and string this time) and will dismantle to sell it over the next week or so, and I'll have easily enough to cover the castle.

I've ordered the Holiday Train. Used the GB10 code and also had £5 of points to spend, so got it for £55, which I didn't think was bad. Must admit I'm now looking at the electric motor and extra track :D

Very excited about this one: it's going to become part of our annual Christmas traditions with the kid. :D

I've now got to sift out the pieces for the Winter Toy Shop out of all the other Lego that the kids have mixed up. :x

 It's a real problem. I am warming to the idea of building an entire winter village for the train to scoot around (I'd quite like to assemble a bespoke nativity set, too), but it'd definitely need to be classed as a Christmas decoration and kept separate from any other Lego we accumulate.

Did anyone advise what the minimum power functions stuff was required to just make the train go round?

Not sure. I understood the £30 Power Functions set was recommended, but I don't know if you could maybe get away with buying less.

It might not be the cheapest, but the easiest way of motorising the train would be to grab a 9V circle of track and motor/speed controller off ebay. Replace the front bogey of the train with the motor (assuming it fits), or modify one of the carriages to take the motor then just plug it in and leave it going :shifty: I've nevet understood the move towards remote control for the trains. Having to find and replace batteries all the time isn't an upgrade :dread:

One thing to consider - Argos 3 for 2 on toys is next week and the Power Functions set is £27.99....

Good shout. Might see if I can get my nieces' Xmas presents and bag myself a free Lego motor...

Having only just started looking at this, the whole system does seem ridiculously complicated.

One other option is to convince my boy that he really wants the passenger train for Christmas...

My train was dispatched yesterday.

I looked up the power functions myself, the Canadian listing for the train gives a bit more detail. These are the parts you need:
To motorize the engine, purchase items 8879, 8884, 88000, and 88002. Instructions can be found in the back of your building instructions.

https://shop.lego.com/en-CA/Winter-Holiday-Train-10254

I skipped the remote control parts and just ordered the battery and motor (£11.99 each if memory serves). They have a long lead time though so I won't be getting those for a month or so.

Looking at the picture for the battery pack, it looks like it has a switch on for manual forwards/reverse operation... Hopefully you can access that switch when it's in the train :slol:

Doesn't look like that Argos set has the correct motor for a train so that's not an option.

Code has expired :(

Thanks for the heads up - I have been looking at this year's 3-in-one creator sets so might pick up some of those - they're good for building with my grandson, and you get quite a few pieces for the money. Also I'm not too precious about the bits ending up in the 'general' pot, unlike the modulars, haunted house, lord of the rings stuff etc. which I keep separate.

One other thing to consider, Amazon generally price match the Argos 3 for 2 price (so if it's £99.99 but 3 for 2 on Argos then Amazon will be £66.66) so if you don't need 3 things then Amazon is worth a look.
