I built by one or two bags a day to keep it steady as I didn't want it to be over too quickly.

Not sure if this would interest anybody but Music Magpie now buy Lego. In an odd decision they don't buy specific sets but instead give a fixed price per kilo.

I made this frame to display my London 2012 minifigs. It turned out quite nicely and was pretty easy to make.

First off, cut the baseplate to the required size. I made this a while ago so I can't quite remember, but I think I cut three lines of studs from one horizontal and one vertical side. Score it with a Stanley knife and ruler, and it should snap off with a bit of bending.

You can mount the artwork in the Ribba frame at the back or the front, so mount the cut baseplate at the back with the minifigs on there. You can just insert the minifig bases in the gaps between the studs, because the gap between the studs is equal to the height of a flat Lego piece. I thought I'd have to buy some mounting pieces but it's okay without.

It's a neat idea, as I do have soooo many minifigs and previously displayed them in a big ferrero roche box in a jumble.

Loving that "forbidden" 4x2 plate joinery.

So Lego are going to be unveiling their biggest ever set on 1st September, and rumour has it that it's going to be a new Millennium Falcon.

Costing $700 and with an instruction manual almost 500 pages long.

My local Asda had the U-wing microfighter kit for 90p this morning. Maybe store specific but might be worth a look.

Looking for some suggestions, guys.

Last year I bought the Christmas train, Santa's workshop, the winter toyshop, as well as the city train (with motor) to extend the track and power the train. In the end, I only assembled the train (and kept it up a height) as the boy had just started to crawl, and it would have been a disaster

This year, I'm looking to create a festive diorama, in the alcove we have at the front of our living room. I'm also considering lining the walls with images of snowcapped mountains. It'll have the train going around it, the two other models around, and I'm considering adding the carousel as well, if I can fund it.

What material do you think I could use to create a 'snow' effect on the floor? At a guess, I'd say it's about a square metre so I probably can't stretch to filling the space with white lego base plates (if they even exist). Whatever I use needs to be capable of allowing the minifigs to stand up (so if I used a foam, it would need to be quite firm.)

I'm not hugely creative so any suggestions appreciated.

Ive never tried it but apparently the absorbent stuff in nappies makes good fake snow, just add water and have at it. Theres also various snow in a can options that should do the job, I imagine they vary wildly in quality though.

I've got two of those :shifty: I'm assuming those prices are for sealed versions though, right? I've never seen a UCS X-Wing go for that much (there's at least three on ebay at the moment for ~£300).

Looking at how the prices tend to go whenever a set is discontinued I'm tempted to buy two of this new Star Wars set to build one and keep the other as an investment... No idea where I'd keep it, though.

You can get sort of "artificial snow" from a few places, but I'm not sure how realistic you want to go. As far as I'm aware that stuff will eventually sort of dry out and go back to it's original size so you'd need to keep servicing it. If you check Hobbycraft or something you can get little polystyrene stuffing balls for bean bags, which would look the part from a distance (and they'd be ideal minifig snowball size :shifty: ).

I'll have a look around for some alternatives, too.

Also, as you've got the Christmas train, have you seen the new Winter Village Station? (out on October the 1st):

I've worked with the polystyrene balls for installation art and they weigh nothing and so go strawberry floating everywhere at the slightest breeze. Trust me do not use them for this

A well compacted layer of cotton wool will look fine, if you want to some frozen water just paint a layer of acrylic varnish over a layer of blue or silver poster paint.

Cheers guys. Will look at the cotton wool option, I think.

Frank - thanks, didn't know about the station. 100% getting that!

Has anyone seen that LEGO Masters show on Channel 4?

Ended up watching it last night and it was pretty cool. Some really talented builders and I like that they had a mix of younger and older contestants.
Best way to describe it is as "The Great British Brick-Off". Same kind of format, but with tonnes of LEGO involved. I will admit I'm hoping to see some crying children/man-children in later episodes.

Yeah I watched the first episode, I'm hoping it does well as I really like the idea. It has also inspired me to actually sort out my Lego collection and get some proper storage in place for it. I might even break up a few more of the models that I have assembled at the moment and free up some shelf space.

I was browsing through Tesco last night and picked up the Clayface set from the Lego Batman Movie line mostly because it was reduced. I put it together last night and despite hearing that it wasn't a particularly popular set (hence the reduced price I'm assuming) I think it looks pretty good.
