If there was a referendum on the future of the monarchy, how would you vote and why?

Yes, they bring in a great deal of money from tourism which without them we wouldn't get as people wont give a gooseberry fool about some big house. It is a big part of British heritage and in the grand scheme of things doesn't really cost much.

Myth busted:

Also, people strawberry floating love visiting big houses. British Heritage has a fuckton you can go see, which people do in droves.

The Royals' castles and palaces would make us more money if they were gone from them. We could open them up for real tourism.

Abolish the monarchy, but make them perform in some sort of circus to appease tourists.

Public opinion polls (out there in the real world, not on internet forums) are massively in favour of the constitutional monarchy remaining, are they not? A whole bunch of polls a couple of years back had it at 75%+ or something, if anything their popularity has grown.

I doubt it's fallen much since then. I haven't seen any recent polls though.

Can confirm would lead a violent revolution to overthrow the monarchy and redistribute the wealth amongst the proletariat.

I think they cost each of us something like £1 a year, so keep em. I don't see any real term negatives to them to be honest.

I'd much rather get rid of the House of Lords first. They're also unelected but they have AFAIK a much biggger impact on our politics now than the Monarchy do.

In answer to the poll I voted I don't care.

Been here long enough. Also Britain is bland enough without some identity.

Not fussed about them really. If I met the Queen I'd be expected to bow to her...strawberry float off, she's no more special than anyone else.

Even if we 'got rid' of them in terms of their influence/status, they'd still presumably own all the land and estates, so they'd still be extraordinarily well-off and would own the likes of Buckingham Palace, so we couldn't open it to the public or anything like that.

Get rid of them. It's institutionalized inequality and the media frenzy over every little thing they get up to like having babies makes me sick.

It’s still early but I am surprised the poll is as close as it is (40% in favour, 35% against). I always thought GR was a hive of villainous republicans.

I think I would probably vote to keep them if it ever came up for a vote. I don’t see they do any harm to the country, they cost next to nothing and the Queen is not the reason we have such a broken political system at the moment. My views might change if and when Charlie takes over though.

Staydead had a good point (never thought I would say that ;) ), reform of the House of Lords is far more urgent.

Tourism at Buckingham Palace would probably increase if you were allowed to go inside and walk about, not decrease because the Royal Family aren't there anymore.

Yeah alright Russell!

The HoL needs reform (imo), the monarchy works reasonably well (imo).

It doesn't work at all. It's a symbol of inequality which makes people believe that someone is better because they are born into a certain family.

Look at all the fawning sycophants who camped outside the hospital. Daft banana splits.
