For those of you that have credit card, do you shop around? And do you use the soft search eligibility checkers to see what you're eligible for?

They wouldn't be allowed to hold it against you as the FCA wouldn't look to kindly on it.

If there's one benefit to my wife keeping her original surname (as she's a Doctor and it's "loads of hassle to change professionally" ), is that every 12 months we cancel sky and get a new customer deal (and it's never flagged as our surnames are different). :slol:

Just done this recently where retentions offered me 10% discount, said no thanks and my wife got £120 cashback tracked, 25% off our same bill for the whole year AND got £75 of account credit (plus a new 500GB SKY HD box). Sky installer dropped it off today in place of our 2TB box (which I'll now rip the HD out of and use it for my work  ) and we're now better off (but still get to keep the family pack).

Personally, I've got £13k of credit card debt still to shift, but thankfully, my time working in finance means it's ALL on 0% interest. And I can 'shuffle' this debt between all my cards every 12 months for new 0% deals (also means no need for any new cards for a while), meaning it'll STAY on 0% too. :datass:

It's still gooseberry fool paying that amount back, but most of it is from mistakes made many a year ago now. Plus, I ensure all of our monthly and weekly utility and shopping bills stay as low as possible too.

Now I've got a full-time job at Aldi, I can hopefully climb the promotions ladder quickly, get my pay up and make a real dent in that CC total.

As long as I can live long enough to see my daughter through school my main goal is to teach her financial education (so she doesn't make the same mistakes I have). Thankfully, I'm alright at making guides ;)

Had 9k at one point just on one credit card. Interest was killing me. Hence my decision to take drastic action.

My current credit card debt stands at £500 but that's only because I bought my car insurance and season ticket on it. And it's 0% for 15 months. 8-)

I'm fairly obsessed with money. Fortunately, I'm also careful with it, and always have been. Right now I spend a lot, but I also save/invest a lot. When I was poor I spent barely anything and saved whatever I could. Never understood people who end up broke two weeks after every payday.

I've gotten better with money.

It can sometimes be tough on my relationship having to cut back on nights out but it will be worth it.

I'm lucky enough that might current account never drops below £500.

I am however still a bit in the financial gooseberry fool however, as i owe a lot on a credit card.
I'm going to try and move that onto a balance transfer card though to try and shift it, because it feels like i'm only paying the interest at the moment, and barely making a dent in the amount i owe.

My outgoings are pretty high, but mostly because we're private renting a place in reading.

  • Rent:- £875
  • internet/landline:- £30
  • Electricity:- £140 a month
  • Credit Card:- £65
  • Bank Loan:- £128 (last one!)
  • His & Hers mobile phones:- £30-ish when combined.
  • Food/Shopping:- £160-£180
  • Petrol:- £50
  • Council Tax:- £160

I've probably forgotten some there, but you get the idea.
Once the credit card is paid off, I can start trying to get some extra money in the black, which will be nice.

That's an awful lot for electricity. I'd defo try switching that. When we moved in we got a bill for £220 for 6 weeks for a small 1 bed flat. Switched and now we're paying £40 a month.

Personally, my job doesn't pay great and Anung is a student. Our rent and paper bills are about £800 a month. I overspend huge in food cuz I like to eat well. We spend a lot on clothes and going out too. But, I always buy stuff in the reduced aisle to stick in the freezer. Often I'll go out with banjo and well get a weeks shopping for a tenner. The next I'll spend a tenner on fruit for two days from the local organic deli. Evens out I suppose. I make a bit of money on eBay (leave money in PayPal account till end of month. Spreading your money means when you realise you've got strawberry float all in your account you've got a second chance) and don't buy brand new clothes often. They're always in sale or off eBay so I don't actually piss away too much. Anung however

I don't have credit cards. Have a wages/spending account, and a bills account we both put into. Got behind on council tax cuz anungs student discount got strawberry floated up but were pretty much done with that now. I don't borrow, but I don't save either. Between three savings accounts (online instant access, bank of scotland savings and a credit union) I have about £20. But we're off to japan so strawberry float saving right now. We're not interested in a house for a good few years. After japan I'm gunna set up money to go into savings. Mostly so I can buy a new bike and cycle across Europe next year, but I'd like to get something together. A grand incase of gooseberry fool situation would be good enough for the now. If Anung takes a job I'd be able to save a lot more and I intend to start saving properly for the future then.

Another tip to those paying high electricity bills is to give an actual meter reading once a month and make sure that they only bill you for what you actually use. This ensures you're never left with them holding on to your money (earning them interest) when you need it more. Since doing this only a few months ago we've gone from £120pm dual-fuel to £45pm actual usage. Meaning our in-credit pot has covered the last few months gas/electric bills already

Fredo's are up at the moment to a staggering 20p, your best bet is to invest that 5p into a 3-year fixed ISA where you'll be looking at a 2.5% interest per year as long as you regularly switch when the introductory rate ends. By the end of the 3 years you will need to hope that Fredo's have dropped back to their 2003 hayday price of 10p and you should have enough to purchase one. Beware though if you withdraw your 5p saving early, you may lose out on the interest.

May I suggest petty theft as a viable alternative?
