We're only really here to talk about videogames, follow the rules or strawberry float off, simple.

That is all I have to say on the matter.

 ...And this is why I've always liked you, Rik. It is all a load of old cobblers at the end of the of the day, after all. Everybody shouting and stuff, claims and counter-claims and just so much white noise. Christ, have we really got nothing better to do with ourselves these days? I'd quite like to see some action on my whole suggestion of a CMS 'front-end' for the forum. I can do some mock-ups and everything if you'd like...

DO IT!

I'd like to know the reasoning behind the new mods being given their position. Is it because KKLEIN works for the Sun?

I wish I had some elaborate Phoenix Wright related animation thing prepared, but this was rather out of the blue so I'm afraid we'll have to go with the text version.

Nobody is saying this is a solution to everything that has been bugging people, it's just the first step. Now, some people have said they're willing to change if GR changes, so I'll be holding them to that now. And if they don't change, I will ban the gooseberry fool out of them.

I've been brought on as, basically, a GGC mod, although I've the power to go crazy in Off Topic too if the mood takes me. And I know you're probably saying WHAT ABOUT THE FORUM SPECIFIC MODS? but Garth believes that giving me the ability to go into Off Topic and tidy it up, just in case nobody else was around, would be a good idea. I agree, since nothing would be worse than me or Suzz trapped in GGC, while someone goes apeshit somewhere else. I'll be very much in GGC all the time though, so it's forum-specific except in special circumstances that should never happen.

So, yeah, that's it, really. We won't wake up to a brand new GRcade tomorrow, but we will dust ourselves off and start building up something very special.

There is talk of a front page for the site too, so hopefully we'll be able to get started on that over the next few days too.

Questions, comments etc.. are appreciated.

The thing here is that it's a really good start, but I would personally really prefer it if some of the other things we were talked about began to be enacted as well. Could an Admin or Mod confirm to us that this isn't just it?

Don't get me wrong, I think it's fabulous that we have some fresh blood, but if we can't remove or remedy the stale blood then not a lot will change, and if they're not going to implement things like the vast scaling back of the concept of global moderators then, well...

It's a step in the right direction, but I'd love to see more happen over the coming days.

Actually, that sounds like a really good idea. Best of both worlds there.

Of course not. It is, however, a step in the right direction. Rome wasn't built in a day. And I will keep my word about changing my ways. Likewise, though, I may not be able to completely change immediately. I will certainly try my damndest, though.

It could work, sure, but only if the Mods are mature enough to stick to their "sections" unless something real bad is going down.

Frankly I would like to see 'defined' sections for each Mod, just so we know what the score is and exactly where everyone is expected to be. It would be trivial for Garth to add the "Moderated by..." notice to the end of each individual sub-forum, and that would be nice.

It's a transparency thing, at the end of the day, and I can't see any harm coming from it apart from us understanding the score a little better.

No, Craig. We can't.

EDIT: Hey, if we're making mods here, deal me in. Guys? Guys?

The thing about the front page idea is that we have to make sure that both Garth and Green Gecko (who has been approached by the Mods to assist Garth with day-to-day technical issues with the forum) feel there is something that can be done. There are some technicalities here. I'm pretty sure the CMS approach might be too impractical, although it would be, imo, a great idea as it will be a very 'fluid' approach with it's ability to be constantly updated. It's all a question of how 'expandable' or 'adapatable' the format of the forum is to having a front end of some kind bolted on.

CMS is my ideal (it's how most videogame sites seem to operate these days, too), so I'm holding out for that - but in the end the guys up in the GRcade R&D Department get to call the shots on what is and isn't possible. And there is also the issue of cost. Buying into the expanded version of Wordpress or Joomla does involve some additional cash on top of the server rental for the existing forum I'd be willing to contribute money and professional design help, but it's just another hurdle to jump.

It's a Content Management System - basically a site which is, in essence, no more than a set of editable 'containers' that can be edited, updated and otherwise tweaked on a constant basis, with changes applied on a site-wide basis at the mere click of a mouse (including an entire re-skinning of the site). A great deal of video game sites these days seem to favour the CMS approach because it's so flexible and easily updated. Check out http://wordpress.org/ or http://www.joomla.org/

[Edit] or the other way would be to create a series of HTML pages using CSS. But that can get a bit messy and wouldn't have the anything like the accessibility of a CMS.

Ah, I see. I was worried that you were heading down the old blog route that approximately 100,000,000 gaming websites use.

WTF MON

Thus concludes my first post as Technician. I will thoroughly read the gooseberry fool out of this topic in the next few days with a packet of crisps, a beer and a sketchpad.

GG will draw the way to a new GR. Draw I tell you! (Pics will be included.)

NB: I can implement the "wtf moderates this forum" subtext that KP suggested? What do people think about that?

Actually I don't even know who the moderators are yet *goes to staff room*. BBL.

NB2: Has my posting style just completely changed?

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."
