Bryn Terfel is a god to me. Still really driven and passionate about his music as well. Go to that

Saw Frantic Assembly's adaptation of Othello last week:

The contrast between the modern (slightly chavvy) setting and the Shakespearean dialogue takes some getting used to, but it's a tremendous show. Gets proper brutal near the end (when Iago glasses Emilia - Blood everywhere)

I appreciated how everyone always refers to Iago as "honest Iago" or variations on a theme. I thought Shakespeare was a little more subtle than that...

So, what's everyone got lined up for this year so far?

I've got tickets for the Birmingham panto, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, The Producers, Barnum and Hairspray so far. Hoping I can exploit a few of the flash sales to see a couple of the big London shows at the moment (ones I definitely want to get to: Once, the Book of Mormon and possibly Dirty Rotten Scoundrels)

Renewed my ATG Theatrecard and signed up as a friend of the Birmingham Hippodrome for christmas this year, so I'm going to be making the most of both of those

Desperate to get tickets for City of Angels before it disappears in London:

Samantha Barks' first show since Les Mis. In a 250 seat theatre. Sold out so quickly :dread:

Going to be camping on the Barclays Front Row seats until I manage to get some. This can only end well.

So, Women on the Verge was a lot better than I was expecting. Tamsin Greig doesn't really have the voice for musicals but she still puts on a pretty decent performance. Anna Skellern was phenomenal, though. Can't wait until they get the West End cast recording out

There's some really dodgy lyrics in places, mind...

You feel it in your eyes -
They start to water like the place between your thighs

:dread:

I liked how Willemijn Verkaik (Elpheba and Dutch/German Elsa) sung like, three lines for the entire thing. Guess she's still taking it steady after the back surgery.

Happy days.

Finally got round to watching Once yesterday. Last day of performances :slol:

It was pretty good. The soundtrack is fantastic, and Ronan Keating wasn't anywhere near as annoying as I was expecting (and he's actually got a decent voice. It's raw). The ensemble end up stealing the show for a lot of it, though. The young guy who doesn't do well in his interview and the heavy metal drummer got some genuine irl laughs. Liked how the set was a working bar, too, and you could nip up and buy drinks there before the show/during the interval.

It's another one of those musicals where the second act is weak, though. It's got an amazing first half, but in the second, nothing happens. They spend the whole first act falling in love, and then both still end up going their separate ways at the end and nothing is ever resolved.

As for the theatre; it's awful. Had seats in row H of the Dress Circle, which usually wouldn't be that bad, but it's barely raked and the seats aren't offset, so if you have someone sitting in front of you, regardless of how tall they are, their head's going to block out 50% of the stage.

Pretty innovative on the refreshments front, mind you - They've introduced this Ordertorium scheme that they've had on Broadway for a few months, so there's little menus on the seats you can peruse, then if you want to order anything you can just flag the waiter over and he takes your order/money at your seat and they bring it straight out (or at the interval if you want ice creams). Great for dodging the queues at the ice-cream sellers or the bar

Was reading up on it a little more on the train home, and I've discovered that before Ronan Keating took over, Guy was played by bloody Rory:

Had no idea he could sing.

And the original Girl (inventive naming, right?) on Broadway was Cristin Milioti

Have to say I've never noticed this thread. I'm not an avid theatregoer but I went to see One Man Two Guvnors on Boxing Day at Brighton's Theatre Royal last year and it was absolutely brilliant fun! Gavin Spokes was perfect as the lead character.

This year I've got tickets for And Then There Were None at the same venue. Huge fan of it (and any of Christie's work in general) so I can't wait.

Check out my YouTube channel!
One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.

Went and saw Cats on Monday. Loved it, a great spectacle, even had a singalong.
Time to decide what to see next!

Saw the Producers in Birmingham earlier. Jason Manford can sing (and do an accent other than his own!) :o

Shocking.

Phill Jupitus was disappointing as the German fella (his singing, anyway. The bit with the pigeons was hilarious) and Louie Spence was pretty unintelligible, but David Bedella absolutely stole the show (Springtime for Hitler/Heil Myself is the funniest thing I've seen in the theatre in years  ).

American Idiot is coming back to the UK! That's another one I can cross off the list

Got front row circle tickets for one of the "preview" showings. Sounds like the theatre is a bit terrible, but the tickets were only £25 each so if it's awful it's not a complete loss.

It's starring some woman who was on the X-Factor, too. How exciting.
