As we know, the Mini NES has been discontinued. But that's ok: 16-bit is where the pinnacle of 2d retro gaming really lies.

And here we are: the first rumours about a SNES mini are starting to emerge.

https://www.engadget.com/2017/04/19/nin ... eurogamer/

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017- ... -this-year

Full Eurogamer article (they all say much the same at this early stage):

Nintendo will follow up its smash hit NES microconsole with a mini version of the SNES, sources close to the company have confirmed to Eurogamer.

1
The SNES mini (or, to continue Nintendo's official branding, likely the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System) is currently scheduled to launch in time for Christmas this year. Development of the device is already under way, our sources have indicated.

Nintendo's plans for SNES mini are also a major reason why last year's NES mini did not see a reprieve from discontinuation, Eurogamer understands, despite the latter's continued popularity and sell-out status.

Last week, Nintendo explained that it never intended NES mini to be a permanent product. From the company's perspective, the microconsole was planned as a cool novelty item perfect for Christmas 2016, and the numbers in which it was manufactured and shipped were expected to be enough to suit this goal.

But NES mini ended up breaking out to become more popular than anticipated and quickly sold out, leading to a bustling resale market on eBay. NES mini shipments continued into the early part of this year, but its production run could not be extended further - as SNES mini was slated for production instead.

Hopefully, more stock of the SNES mini will be made available to avoid a repeat of the same shortages.

The reality of a SNES mini is certainly exciting - while the NES was unique for being Nintendo's first home console, the SNES arguably boasts the better software line-up, and a catalogue of classics far more advanced than their NES forebears. Compare The Legend of Zelda on NES to A Link to the Past, for example, or Donkey Kong to Donkey Kong Country.

So... what games do you want to see? Will it be restricted to 30 games, or will there be more? Surely there is stiffer competition for places here, though.

Why would they discontinue the NES mini (that people still want!) to release a SNES Mini?

I’d love a SNES mini although I expect (if they released it) they would end up having strawberry float all stock and discontinue it long before I had a chance of getting one.

Seems a daft decision to make this when there's still demand for an NES Mini but seen as I managed to buy one of the former I'm not complaining. This will be a must by, particularly with the price of SNES games rising all the time in Europe. Hopefully we get a good mix of the best from Nintendo and other developers, but most importantly I hope we get games that never released over here originally such as Super Mario RPG, Earthbound and Chrono Trigger.

I never owned a SNES but it's one of my favourite ever systems. I'll be all over this bad boy.

Plus this probably means there is an N64 mini coming...

Are SNES game files much bigger than on the NES? Wonder if they'd be able to fit 30 games into the one system like before?

Didn't the NES Mini have enough storage for at least twice the number of games it actually shipped with? Might have been even more.

But yeah, SNES games tend to be anywhere from a few hundred kilobytes to a couple of megabytes. NES games only reached the low hundred kilobytes from what I remember (Though it's been a while since I looked at any NES or SNES ROMS).

I think some people have managed to get the entire NES library on to the NES Mini so I'm sure they could put 30 games on this if they wanted to. I have a feeling it will either be less games or a higher price point though.

Wasn't too fussed about the NES mini, but I'll be picking up a SNES mini despite still having my original console and games.
