I would imagine there are two sides to it, one being the competion and desire to win and the more sinister side of body building with the insecurities and body dysmorphia, paranoia that lead to people pushing boundaries.

It is weird though, everyone must have a story of looking forward to training after a good night's sleep and eating well throughout the day yet having a rubbish session. Then you get the alternative of having an awesome session after a booze filled weekend wth minimal sleep and eating junk food. Personally the only thing I can see in myself is the fact I haven't trained which probably says I should manage my off days better.


I almost never do isolation exercises. I don't enjoy them compared to compound movements. Should do more bicep curls. Gone months without doing them.

I just assume "cumulative fatigue" is the reason why junk food filled rest days that go on too long can sometimes lead to very productive sessions.

I don't imagine most people even on the extreme end of the bodybuilding spectrum have mental health issues like body dysmorphia. I reckon they just really enjoy what they do and are super competitive about it in the same way most professional sports people are. That weird getting fake boobs in his arms and chest to look muscular without actually going gym however certainly does.

I think you underestimate the prevalence of body dysmorphia.

Been having to get creative with my callisthenics, started filling up my bag with 15l of water bottles to give a bit of resistance while I squat :lol:

Well a couple of weeks ago I took the plunge and went for the buzz cut. I know to those of you didn't give a shot about losing their hair or have a wonderful barnet it might seem strange but I've always hated losing my hair. Whst spurred it on was I decided to pay for a PT and go all out in the run up to my wedding, in the pictures I took I thought I look half decent, it's time to take the plunge and get rid. I'm actually really chuffed, it's like a weight off my shoulders.

Anyway the training is tough but man the diet... Nothing is unpleasant but I enjoy cooking and it's getting difficult with the lack of variety. Very much looking forward to the cheat day :slol: . Training is very different, mostly isolation and more reps with lower weights. It feels like a bit of a step back but the guy is built like a Greek god so I'm willing to accept that he knows what he is doing.

Congrats :D The buzz cut is the way to go. But I get you, its not easy losing your hair at least if it happens at an early age, its strawberry floating tough to deal with. I started going bald in my early 20s and was paranoid and self conscious about it for years. I did the usual gooseberry fool of wearing hats or brushing what was left of it forward to cover the bald bits :lol: Shaving it all off was a relief. Best of all is getting jacked and having a buzz cut always looks good. I saw a guy the other day who was almost entirely bald on top, just had peach fuzz left, but grew the sides out, and spiked them up like a double comb over haha..it looked strawberry floating dreadful!


Good luck with the PT man, hope it goes well. Just back from the gym myself, I skipped it last night as I was too tired, but made up for it today. 5x5 65KG bench press, super happy with that

Thanks man, it's been nice having the amount of people who have said that they didn't even notice I was losing my hair and that the bald look suits me. No more worrying about what it looks like after a windy day, taking a hat off and most importantly I'm not going to have a load of wedding pictures to look back on and cringe at.

Well done mate, glad your BP is coming on nicely.

My month of calisthenics only has obviously lost me more gains than I thought. Was doing 60kg 3x12 on the bench for my first set back in a gym with weights and some rather overweight guy walked over unannounced, started spotting me terribly (by taking too much of the weight for each rep) then told me to not touch my chest with the bar and wandered off. Guy evidently didn't speak English and i was pretty stunned was just like err ok... :lol: sound advice there m8

Was just doing some push ups last night but felt a pain in my neck when ieft the gym. Wake up this morning and its 10x worse. I can't look left or down without severe pain :cry:

I just did the first workout of Stronglifts 5x5. I was easily the least healthy looking guy in the gym.

Stronglifts is a great programme and everyone starts somewhere. Was this your first weightlifting session?

If you have energy for it, add pull ups to end of the session.

Nice. I think I did something similar when I first started lifting. Can't really remember now, it was like 6 or so years ago. I really should have more to show for that amount of time....

SL5x5 is a great program, and you'll begin to see progress pretty much straight away. So long as you've got the form down, it's all just about chasing those bigger lifts.

Good job getting yourself in the gym mate. The beginning is by far the worst part, you don't have the strength to push yourself that hard, everything hurts like strawberry float and your blowing just walking down the stairs. Give it a couple of months and it will start to get easier and more importantly enjoyable.

What kind of cutting are you doing?

The hard thing is that I guess you're the same in that the smallest plates you can add are 1.25kg? I remember when my cousin lived with me for a bit that he would measure out fractional weights with sugar so that he could keep increasing the weight. Not exactly practical for the gym but an idea none the less :D .

It's a diet that puts me in a slight calorie deficit but it's primarily about being low fat and no refined sugar. I've been reading up on it a fair bit and I believe it's fairly standard in that the calories are made up of macros being 40% carbs, 40% protein & 20% fat. Also it's structured so that you have the vast majority of your carbs before and after training with part of one of the meals removed on non training days. You also get one cheat meal per week that you ideally have on a day after training when you will also train the next day in place of the normal post work out meal. You can just use IIFYM but my trainer promotes eating healthier which I can get behind.

While it is mentally challenging eating the same thing every day it's actually quite convenient with shift work and I don't think food has ever tasted as good as that first cheat. I promised myself I wouldn't get madly into weight lifting/body building when I started but here we are :lol:

Good going. I really struggle with meal ideas. Have you got any examples you can post?
