Well, are you lifting the bar?

If it's a proper Olympic bar like most gyms should have, it'll be 20kg.

You count the bar! It weighs 20KG. That's not an insignificant amount of weight that you just ignore it.

Smith machine bars are sort of anti weighted but I won't respect any lifts achieved using them.

Overhead press is always the toughest lift to progress on. I struggle to get past 65KG 3x5 and find without regular training of it, the strength rapidly vanishes from me.

Yeah its a proper bar alright. I get that the beginning of SL is obviously ramping up to bigger weights but doing a 20kg squat with just the bar is just too easy, it feels like literally nothing which is why I put the 20kg on top of that.

From the stronglifts website :

Your starting weights depend on your strength and experience. Download my spreadsheets and apps, they’ll calculate your starting weights for you. Here’s the basic idea…

If you’ve done these exercises before, with proper form, then start with 50% of your max. So if you can Squat 5x100kg/220lb, start with 50kg/110lb. This will be easy but within two months you’ll be Squatting 110kg/245lb for 5×5 – more than you started with.

If you’ve never done these exercise or haven’t lifted in years, then start with the empty bar. You may look ridiculous for a while, but the weight will increase each workout. Within three months you’ll be Squatting 100kg/220lb for 5×5 – more than most people.

Deadlift and Barbell Row you don’t start with the empty bar. You can’t do these exercises with the bar in the air. Each rep must start from the floor. Start with 40kg/95lb on DL and 30kg/65lb on Row (bar weight included). Use full diameter plates so the bar starts at your mid-shin on each rep.

No worries. I really enjoyed SL when I did it a while back.

Joined a new gym, induction tomorrow. As it is near work, I think i'll most likely be going 3 times a week. So going to switch to a 3 day split.

Do you guys find it is best to keep the groups separate for 3 days splits, or mix them? e.g. do Back/Biceps, Chest/Triceps & Shoulders/Legs or do each workout covering each body part? I've seen suggestions for both, but undecided. Also going to try and go in the morning before work, should be fine whilst the sunlight is here in the mornings, but winter may be more difficult...

I currently do push pull legs and it's working pretty well for me. I don't really do legs enough though, but that's on me.

About to jump back into weights - the goal is to be lean though, not big, so not really sure what to do beyond a lot of cardio as my last workout regime led to me puffing out in a way I wasn't happy with. Anyone got any ideas?

I am now starting to put on weight, which is pretty damn annoying. I used to be a fatty back in the day, but have been relatively thin for a while now. Certainly not toned by any means, but a good weight. But since moving to Germany I seem to have started to get a bit chubbier, especially in the love handles. I'm muffin topping like a mummy strawberry floater. I'm surprised as I ate a lot more bread and delicious food when I lived in Italy but seemed to not put weight on at all. I wondered whether it was my diet, but I think I eat pretty well. A good balance of vegetarian and meat meals. Decent portions etc.

I'm not sure whether I am drinking any more than usual or just now I'm 30 I can't drink as much as before. Anyway, I struggle to exercise as I have a slipped disc and sciatica, which means no stuff like running (this was a big reason I lost weight years ago). So does anyone have know any home fitness videos or anything that aren't too damaging on the knees etc. I'm gonna try get back into swimming, although I hate public pools and they are relatively expensive :dread: .

My gf has put on weight too and we both kind of mentioned it to each other yesterday that we were expanding a little bit. My damn jeans barely fitted :fp:

I know getting into exercise is a bit difficult, but I don't want to get back to how fat I was as a teenager :dread: .

Sciatica is a strawberry floating bitch. I wouldn't even swim with it. Get on diclofenic potassium (combine with red wine for a good time) and just do long walks until you feel you can trust your back pain to not flare up.

If you have a park nearby with a pull up bar, I'd suggest just hanging from it, might ease the pain.

I've had it around 6 years so sadly don't think it's going anywhere any time soon. Drugs didn't do much apart from mess with my head :dread:

Sounds like they had you on pills which are based on morphine. Those made me feel sluggish. Although worked especially well with red wine!

Try diclofenac potassium, it needs a prescription but it helped me so much more than the original painkillers I was given.

If you've had it for so long and it hasn't gone, have you not had physio or a surgical referral?

I've had physio, but can't really afford to have it done like...3 times a week. I was going weekly and it eases it a bit for maybe a day, but then just goes back to how it was. I've had injections in my back, but that did nothing, and they said it wasn't bad enough to have surgery (I can still move and do stuff normally, just....it hurts)

strawberry float's sake. I've been making decent progress on Stronglifts for a few months and I was starting to notice real improvements in my physique (bigger arms and less chest fat are the main things), along with some much-appreciated compliments too.... only for me to injure the tendon above my right knee. :fp:

My GP said no exercise involving my right leg for 4-6 weeks, so that's no squats, deadlifts, rows and overhead presses presumably. I think the only Stronglift exercise I can do is bench.

I've been doing some chin ups and dumbell stuff at home like some sort of injured war veteran but can anyone suggest anything further I can do to stay swole and burn fat??

If you want to burn body fat, cardio is by no means your only option - diet and weights alone can make a huge difference.

Do an intense weights program (like Stronglifts) - when you get into it you will sweat and feel physically tired after workouts. Also, reduce your intake of sugar and refined carbohydrates (bread, pasta etc). Oh and reading Sandycoin's post above, yeah, reduce alcohol intake too - I'm convinced that our booze culture is largely to blame for our terrible obesity levels in this country.

After working out last night, a workout I regularly do on a Monday I've seemed to have done something to one specific part of my back. Halfway down the right hand side I have a lot of discomfort

Cheers for this - reducing sugar is probably the hardest bit of the whole thing. Wouldn't surprise me if beer was to blame for an awful lot of weight issues here but booze is not an issue for me, I rarely drink alcohol. Any ideas for replacing bread and pasta? Pretty much my staple diet.
