I noticed this last night - went to the PureGym on Bath Street for the first time since I ruined my finger there in 2014 and there was a t-shirt muscles sort running about with a belt doing absolutely nothing that required it.

Returned to the gym 2 weeks earlier than I officially should do.

Bench press 60kg 5x10. That's some light weight but no pain to chest cavity / abdominal wall. Need to get back to 120KG 1rm.

The super strong painkillers worked a treat especially with a glass of red wine. Would recommend.

Maybe he was wearing lifting pants that required a lifting belt

Hit a PR on my squat this week, 102.5kg :D

Nice! I’d love to be squatting up at 100kg again - managed to get there regularly twice, in 2012 and 2015, but have lost so much strength that squatting 5x6 at 50kg did my back in before Christmas.

Tramadol? I've still got some left from tearing my shoulder.

Nice work brer, I'm getting back into it properly now. Aiming for 5 days this week, trying to get my cardio back to reasonable levels before returning to boxing.

Planning to head to my first contemporary dance class tomorrow 8-)

Don't want it interfering with my current exercise routine though so will still be hitting the gym before work tomorrow - gonna be strawberry floating dead by the end of the day.

What weight do you guys lift for dumbbell curls and presd?

I joined at the end off last year as after 2 years of T25 I've reached my limit with constant high impact training and I've always wanted to get more into resistance training. I'm really happy with how the strength training is coming on with the exception of a few upper body exercises with curls being pretty embarrassing at 3x8 at 8-10kg and dumbbell press at 3x8 12kg. There are no machines to try out heavier weights with curls but I can bench much more on the Smith machine to try and increase the weight which is encouraging.

IMO it's all about the form rather than weight with bicep curls, I do 3x15 for 12.5kg, 10kg and 8kg (superset) and have better arms than some folk who lift near double but swing like maniacs.

Never do db press although I should start as my right arm is getting considerably bigger than my left, is there no normal barbell bench to use rather than the Smith?

Personally I'd stay well away from the Smith, you can build up incremental strength without them. By using one it's not gonna properly translate as you're not using any stabiliser muscles, which is half the battle with db press.

That's why I much prefer DB press to benchpress too, need to steady yourself more and feels like almost using all over your body and far greater range of movement.

That's good to hear, thanks. T25 promotes very slow focused reps so I've carried that on too. It's just frustrating to do a good set of wide bar pull ups that most people would find very difficult yet struggle with quite a basic technique.

Unfortunately there is no normal barbell bench, I do flat bench on the incline and a set of incline dumbell press. It might just be a confidence thing but the Smith is helping me increase weight with the dumbbell press.

Slightly unrelated but do people do a lot of cardio or do you use purely resistance training? I still do quite a bit of cardio but it's starting to get a bit time consuming and I'm worried that I'm hampering my progression with strength training. I've done some research and it seems that good resistance training will burn all the calories you need for strength and aesthetically pleasing results but cardio obviously has other health benefits.

Cardio won't hamper gains unless you're going absolutely mental with it. I've found it can even help as it gives me a massive appetite so can pile in crazy amounts of carbs and protein easier. The time consumption is a problem though.

Was doing deadlifts last night and felt a slight pain on the inside of my shin, quite high up towards the knee. Never felt that before, has anyone else had that or know of what could have caused it? I'm guessing my form must have been a bit off (never had issues with deadlift before, so I assume my form is generally good), stopped doing them after I felt it to be safe.

Also I always find that I can seemingly only improve one of the 'big 3' at a time, so a while back my deadlift increased a bit, then my squat has recently, but my deadlift is no longer at what it was, and my bench has been about the same for ages now (OHP seems to be making progress mind, which is nice). Do other people find this? How do you maintain recent improvements in one whilst increasing another?

I've never had pain in that specific place before but it sounds like it'll be alright if you take it easy on the warm up sets next time, sometimes random pain comes and goes I think.

Never had that problem with compound lifts tbh, up your calorie intake?

Shoulder and wrist are hurting a bit but been absolutely caining the gym lately. Gonna be in insane shape for my Thailand trip in March if i can avoid injury beforehand. Forgot how nice it feels to walk down the street feeling so healthy and strong.

I really don't enjoy deadlift, I don't get any sort of (for lack of a better word) feedback that I get with other exercises. I'm basically just concentrating on form so that I don't break my back.

It's my favourite lift. Or was, I'm still nearly 100kg off what I was at my best currently so don't enjoy it quite as much as previously.

I too enjoy deadlift a lot, but currently gooseberry fool at it compared to past (although if I lost 100kg of strength I wouldn't be able to lift the bar, so there's that). Gym is going well at the moment, even if my body rebels against me and I'm tired a lot. Thinking of joining reddits 12 week improvement thing on Monday and posting updates. Got a stag do in the middle of it but it's all good.

Have started getting into resistance training a lot more recently - I'm doing more resistance than cardio now for the first time in my life. My appetite has absolutely sky-rocketed. It's incredible.

What do you you guys get out of doing deadlift's? I'm not questioning you or anything, I'm genuinely curious. I have had back problems so I'm not lifting very heavy weights with deadlift's yet as I'm so conscious of getting my form absolutely perfect.

Mini E, the appetite is real. I'm worried that while the extra protein and calories are helping me bulk that I'm losing some of the tone (toning?) of my abs.

A few things. Mainly it's down to once you're doing it right it will be the lift you're strongest at by a considerable margin, so seeing you're able to lift well over your own body weight is very satisfying.

There's also the general aspect of seeing yourself get better at something and the feeling of endorphins you get with most weight lifting, but it's more pronounced with deadlifts. It's also meant to be the best lift for your central nervous system, from what I've read, with it essentially being a whole body work out which you can't really get from any other lift in the same way.

Did 120kg squat last night, 5x5, new PR and couldn't believe it but it almost felt easy! Even when warning up I did 100kg and it felt like nothing.

I'm still strawberry floated tho, coughing loads now and my chest is wrecked. I'm so glad I'm still able to do weights tho.

I have the same issue, at Uni I always went with a mate, but since then I've been going to the gym solo (apart from the odd session when I share the bench with a random) and my progress on bench press has really plateaued.

Though recently two colleagues have joined the gym I go to near work, so fingers crossed benching solo may be a thing of the past!

As for deadlifts, when you are making progress it's great as it is the heaviest thing I've lifted (got so close to 2x bodyweight a while ago, but since slipped back a bit). Also it uses so many muscles compared to other lifts.

I know that is the goal but I can't see myself lifting over 80kg just because I'm so scared of wrecking my back.
