Cardio and bodyweight fitness. Try the recommended routine over on Reddit.com/r/bodyweightfitness

Cheers mate, will look it up. View to starting this evening so will keep thread updated.

If you want to burn body fat, cardio is by no means your only option - diet and weights alone can make a huge difference.

Do an intense weights program (like Stronglifts) - when you get into it you will sweat and feel physically tired after workouts. Also, reduce your intake of sugar and refined carbohydrates (bread, pasta etc). Oh and reading Sandycoin's post above, yeah, reduce alcohol intake too - I'm convinced that our booze culture is largely to blame for our terrible obesity levels in this country.

Ive just started a program called Whole30 with my wife. Its marketed as a complete overhaul of your eating habits, rather than a diet. But it means you cant have any sugars, at all, very limited carbs, no dairy, etc. Its supposed to help with stomach issues by "resetting" your stomach, and after a month you can slowly add stuff back to your diet. I'm looking forward to seeing what, if any, results there are when combined with my workouts too.

Sounds great. I eat a lot of dairy though as I don't have any issues with it and milk/eggs are great and cheap protein sources. On the other hand, a lot of people are intolerant to dairy, so I see why they've included it.

Corazon - have a look at the Paleo diet too. I loosely follow that. Potato and rice/rissoto are decent mainstream alternatives, and then you have more left-field stuff like lentils etc. And then you can go absolutely wild with 'good' carbs like green vegetables, aubergines, cauliflower etc.

As for the sugar thing, the less you eat it the less you'll crave it. I also find that chewing (sugar-free!) gum satisfies any rare urge to eat ice cream etc. Bit gay maybe but it really works.

Honestly, if you follow a decent/intense workout program and make those changes to your diet I'd be astonished if you don't lose body fat pretty rapidly.

Did my first arms and chest workout for a long time there - I've not lost as much strength as I thought I would have(was able to do 3x8 chest press at 50kg - used to do 3x6 at 65kg) but I can already tell I'll be feeling it badly tomorrow.

Are you using the machine or free weights?

Always free weights. I include the bar in the weight also - barbell chest press. Still struggle with the fear when doing dumbbell exercises after I nearly lost a finger a few years ago.

That eating programme sounds like dodgy and another one of those fads. It also sounds like it'll be more difficult than you think. If you get the results you want from it. Awesome. If not. I'd look up Macro Lean on facebook and watch a few of his videos. I've managed to lose 5-6kg and around 2.5inches on the waist in 3 weeks, just by tracking my macros and counting my calories and without having to really make any sacrifices in regards to limiting my foods. His whole ethos is, there are no bad food, just bad portions and 3 weeks in it feels less like a diet plan and more a lifestyle change which will help me hit my goals.

Totally think you should check his stuff out. He's got a few videos that spell out the bullshit people spout to win over your hard earned cash. The constant cycle of crap that goes with it.

Macro Lean is pretty good - been watching some of his stuff the last few days. I generally find that tracking calories and keeping them at around 2,000 per day means that everything else balances out quite well. I definitely overdo it on the carbs though - think that's where I've piled on the weight over the past few months.

You said you don't drink much but that you like beer?

Beer is one of the worst things imaginable for body fat. I've stopped drinking it.

Diet - see my recommendations on the previous page. Combine that with a high intensity weights program or high intensity interval training (cardio).

Where did you get beer from? I said earlier that beer is probably to blame for issues here, meaning the UK, not me personally.

For the record, I drink beer from time to time, but tend to drink Fireball whisky with a mixer. When I say I don't drink much though I mean maybe once every two months, and not to excess even then. Of all the things I need to cut back on, alcohol is not one of them.

I've been watching his stuff and learning a gooseberry fool ton of stuff. Overloading on carbs isn't a bad thing. Your body only turns it into fat as a last resort. Maybe it's lean muscle you're putting on.

Went to my first Saturday morning Muay Thai class today. Even having left an hour between eating breakfast and going to the class, I felt absolutely horrendous afterwards, and wound up being sick. :dread:

Might just try not eating at all beforehand next time.

I went for a 19km run this morning and didn't eat before hand, I just make sure I eat a decent amount the night before and afterwards, and drink plenty. I think you'll be fine not eating.

I thought the rule was don't eat about 3 hours before a heavy workout. I remember from when I did weights if I had my lunch before 3 hours I would feel very bad, especially right after squats, or dead lifts. :dread:

Brerlappin wrote:Im still plugging away at this diet now too. I had about 4 days in a row last week with a blinding headache which i think was sugar withdrawal. Spent a half hour walking around a shopping center on Saturday and i was so tired and weak it felt like about 2 hours. Think im over the worst of it now tho. Headache is gone, and i feel a bit more with it. I never really eat fruit of vegetables so its hard getting used to some of the meals, but for the most part its been fine. Lots of eggs, meat, fruit and veg. I dont know if its just in my head but since the headache passed i feel a bit more alert and with it than usual. I think im hyper sensitive to sugar now tho. I walked into one of the board rooms in work and before i even saw them, i was like "i can smell donuts", there was a strawberry floating tray of them at the opposite end of the room  Im honestly not even looking to lose weight, im doing this more as moral support for my wife, but i lost 3KG in like 5 days with only 2 workouts. I havent so much as lost a KG in the last few months despite all my workouts. Sugar really is the strawberry floating worst.

I did something similar to this for Lent a few years ago, gave up refined sugars. It really makes you realize how much sugar there is in everything, and how it's in a lot of places where it doesn't need to be. Good luck!

Jesus brer how much sugar were you eating before?

I've been hyper-sensitive to sugar for years since i basically stopped having any, think a chocolate bar would have me bouncing off the walls now.

How fit were you before starting this?

I wasn't in bad shape, but it had certainly been a long time since I did any serious /intense exercise.

I've also realised some Saturday that I seriously strawberry floated up my foot. I slipped lower than the pad my partner was holding while practicing roundhouse kicks with my weaker left leg, and ended up smacking him in the elbow with my foot. Yesterday, the whole end of my left foot came up in a massive, really dark bruise. I don't think it's broken, because it's not too painful, (I can walk on it, and drive to and from work fine,) but it looks horrific. :dread:

Finally went back to boxing after a massive lay off due to torn muscles. I am in pain.

Amazing fun though, hadn't realised how much i missed it. Definitely gonna get back to it as a regular thing.

strawberry float i was rusty as well, my ring movement was utterly appalling.

Re sugar: had a cold the other day and took some pills to help with the sore throat. "Hmm. These taste unusually sweet. *reads ingredients* First ingredient: Caster sugar." FFFFFFFFUUUUU, etc.

I'm glad you're finally back on some sugar Brer. Saw you were cutting it and carbs out and was like "WHAAAT?!" I never got headaches when I was (mistakenly) going low on sugar or carbs but the split second dizzy spells were mad. Surprised I never once fell arse over tit.
I only go nuts on sugar on my once monthly cheat meals. Don't miss it the rest of the time at all. (I guess partly because I don't mind the taste of fakey fake sugar on my oats.)

Awesome man! Did you spar or just do pad work? I'm hoping to get back to BJJ on Monday myself

Just pad work, it was a fairly experienced class and didn't want to embarrass myself too much. I'll give it a couple more sessions then get back to sparring, going back to basics for now to improve my technique again. Was really surprised at how the lay-off affected me. Although thinking about it it has been a good couple of years.

Annoying that I'm moving back out of this city next week as the trainer was really knowledgeable. Have to find another decent place wherever i head next.

When was the last time you were at BJJ?

Oh I'm not back on the sugar yet! Few more days to go. I'm gonna reintroduce them very slowly, ive actually enjoyed the eating regime for the most part. I miss sweets like strawberry floatin crazy but weve been eating some really nice dinners/lunches etc. Hopefully lots of food ideas I can carry forward :D Also discovered nakd bars, great substitute for actual chocolate bars, they only have dates and nuts and stuff in them but theyre gorgeous!

You're having fruit and Nakd bars, aye? Natural sugars. I recently started on fruit as well, but avoid the tropical stuff as it's supposedly more sugar packed than stuff like strawberries, cherries and apples.

I had this a while back.

Image

Similar to a Nakd bar but costs a bomb. (£2+ a good chunk of 50p!) I only have 'em when I can't have usual lunch because of work, so the cost isn't too bad. They sell the Nakd bars round our way too but never thought to try 'em...
