Thanks for the kind words btw.

Been thinking about it today and I think I will pop into the gym after work and sign up. Keen to not let autumn winter wreck my progress. Never realised they are open 7 days either, they close at 1630 today though so I'll leave it for after work. Saw they have a beginners weightlifting class on Tuesday nights, keen for that I think.

Went back to that Muay Thai gym for another lesson and signed up properly. My knuckles are raw after doing hooks on the pads. I don't feel quite as exhausted as I did after the last session, but the hiit at the end was much less intense, so that'll be why.

Got a pair of "proper" Muay Thai shorts with the gym name and some garish patterning with my membership, too, which is nice.

I never understood why, but MT shorts always have that super garish style. I guess it's traditional or something

First sesh at the gym. Kinda brief but I'm short on time tonight.

I think I hate treadmills. Maybe it's how the Aircon is setup but I felt like I was overheating within minutes. Always feel on the verge of falling off too. Think I will keep the treadmill for when the gooseberry fool weather comes. I might sweat running outside but that was the first time I recall it literally dripping off me.

Totally planning on strawberry floating about with the resistance machines on Sunday though.

Maybe. There's one area for free weights that always looks heaving. My only complaint about the place.

You have to use free weights Johnny. The free weight areas are always packed for a reason, they work.

Good job! Treadmills are boring as strawberry float alright. I try and avoid them as much as possible. If youre looking to just lose weight, youll burn so much more calories if you look into a high intensity interval training (HIIT) routine. Theres some great ones out there, and HIIT is just the absolute best way to lose weight and get in shape, with great cardio. If your gym has kettlebells id look into incorporating them into the routine too

Yeah one of my mates was on about metafit which I think is pretty much that. Roping one of them into coming Sunday they know way more about lifting form than I do.

Thought that too, maybe for an absolute beginner it would be okish but you're getting some severe muscular imbalances and overtraining with that. Typical Starting Strength's a much better shout.

Oh they have a guided app that might be handy. I only made it through c25k with the app guiding me on timing and that worked great.

Ive always meant to do stronglifts. I only really do deadlifts and other than that its bodyweight exercises or dumbells/kettlebells. I always avoided bench just because i work out on my own and have no one to spot me.
Im getting sick which sucks tho. I get this every year, this time of year. Just get a tight chest and a cough that seems to last for 2-3 weeks. I doubt ill be able to do much cardio, but i might be able to start on stronglifts at the very least. Ive been enjoying the week doing nothing tho because my wife is away for the week so im just sitting around the house wearing my jiu jitsu gi pants cause theyre cozy as strawberry float, having the occasional beer, and gaming til 1am

I find benching by myself fine, I just never test my 1RM and never increase the weight too quickly; either during a session or session to session.

Yeah the stronglifts app suggests starting at 20kg 5x5 which im sure i can manage easily so ill start there.

I don't have anyone to spot me benching so more often than not I use dumb bells for chest press instead, can try going heavy as you think you can and if start to fail can just drop them to your side. Pretty pleased onto the 50kgs for reps now because gave it a go thinking I couldn't.

Just start with the bar which is usually 20kg with no weights and get your form/confidence (I usually lay with bar at eye level, someone can tell me I'm wrong) and even just add 5kg to each side to see how strong you are/feel to begin with. I can bench an alright amount 110kg-ish but usually prefer to go for form/reps rather than max.

It's very simple and you will see gains. Plenty of time to get your form right as well because you start light.

When you start plateauing or you get bored you can then supplement with pull ups and stuff. This can all be done within the app as well.

Highly recommended.

I have always come up against a brick wall when working on my bench press, even years back when I was taking Starting Strength seriously.

The most I have ever been able to bench is 92.5kg for 3x3 and 95kg for 2x3.

I did some work on lower weight/higher reps last night and managed 3 sets of 7, 6 and 5 reps of 82.5kg. I've just never had much success at breaking through this top end. As soon as I go over 85kg I find it impossible to compete a set of 5 reps.
