Yeah I have been considering the gym its just the price eh. Winter is pretty harsh in scotchland though so I will have to do something once the weather turns to keep the cardio routine anyhoo.

Tbh it was just numbers on a scale until I did this side by side of an identical pose (my default lol) left Christmas season last year, right last week.

I've been thinner than this before but I've never been in as good shape, losing my breath taking washing up the stairs in March was the final straw for me.

That's a mighty impressive weight loss :datass:.

Well done Craig, that's great! And like GD said, I personally find barbell training is when I started to enjoy weights. A lot of it is to do with the progression, which you're not really going to get with a few around the house unless you keep buying heavier ones.

Nice work JR. Like TNAG says, progression is where the fun is at. You really need a gym membership for weights。

This x100.

I found that in six weeks last year I was able to increase everything significantly by just concentrating on the weights with targeted sessions(arms, back, chest/abs, legs), four or five times a week for between 30-60 mins each day.

I, err, haven't done very much since thanks to the spectre of the 70 hour working week I started last July so although I'm sitting at a fairly easy 14-14.5 stone(from 19.5 a couple of years ago) I'm still carrying a lot of weight around my stomach and have lost almost all of the muscle I'd packed on. :dread:

Could do with dropping about 10kg over the next few months.

I'll probably join the gym once the weather turns and running outside isn't a good idea. gooseberry fools expensive.

Is there a Pure up there in the northern wastelands? I've found them to be cheap and well equipped, although they're not well staffed.

Nope. There's a newly opened gym attached to the swimming pool. I think it's £30 a month which probably is cheap but running outside is free so...

Does anyone use a Fitbit? I'm looking to get back to training seriously again and looking at something to help track my cardio, sleep patterns that sort of thing. Seen the Fitbit Charge 2 and it seems pretty solid

I do. If you actually use it for running it's handy for monitoring pace and distance.

I've always been skeptical about sleep monitoring though. You can tell if you've had enough sleep by how you feel. Micro managing that will just make your sleep worse imo. But it's neat to look at I guess.

I used to have a fitbit....

But then I stopped wearing it. I came to the conclusion that I didn't need something to remind me to exercise. It didn't add anything new to my exercise regime.

Moving gyms end of the month as Nuffield kept increasing the price here and there and it wasn't worth it as i don't use the pool/sauna/classes etc. So going to join one near work with a work discount (should save £20 odd each month as well). Will mean I will only be able to do jogging at weekend (don't normally do jogging atm), but will try to do one day before work, one lunch and one after work in the week. May need to go to a 3 week split regime though.

Also been doing a bit more cardio/rowing since seeing it mentioned on here. Doing 5k in about 25mins on the highest resistance. I feel I could keep going, so may try 6k in 30 mins.

I will be doing a mix of cardio and weights, it seems to have options for all variations of cardio as well (Looking at the charge 2)

That's cool, I'm currently weighing up the option of marketing for a muay thai/boxing gym in Thailand. Would mean living out there for a few months from January but would get unlimited free classes, free accommodation and three meals a day for nothing.

You think you'll go back?

I reckon so. The gym is five minutes from my house, and they do beginner classes I can make it to on two evenings in the week, and one on a Saturday. I must have been the oldest student in the room by about a decade, though.

It's a little pricey, £50/month, but they provide all your gear and a uniform for you, and there's no contract or joining fee. It probably makes your first month where you get all your gear great value, and the rest less so. The instructor seems like a decent guy, and the place has some great write ups from people online.

They ended the class with some tabata sprints, 20s on, 10s rest, for three rounds, and I felt like I was going to hurl with that topping off a solid hour of pad work I was totally new to.

Thats cool man, fair play! Hardest part of any martial art, just getting in the door. Once you do that, everything else is easy. 50 a month sounds about right, sadly any martial art thats in use in MMA is pricey as strawberry float nowadays. My first BJJ gym was €90 a month, (now its up to 110 last i heard, and thats about the average). The only reason my current gym is only €50 a month is cause our instructor is "only" a purple belt. Is it your first martial art? I tried MMA striking before but i really dont like getting punched in the face so i did BJJ instead  I loved all the workouts tho, loved padwork and the conditioning, but the frist time someone clocked me on the jaw i knew it wasnt for me haha

Yep.

I was talking to a couple of the more experienced lads after, and they said "just wait until you start sparring" :dread:

I guess I'll just have to see how it goes when I get there. My biggest concern is I know my nose can start bleeding pretty easily, (I've set it off just blowing the strawberry floating thing too hard when my hayfever's been bad before,) and I'm convinced that as soon as I get to sparring, it'll last 20 seconds before I start pouring claret everywhere. Really enjoyed the pad work, though. There's something super satisfying about it.

That's amazing. On the train the now so youtube is blocked but I'll check out that video later, was watching a Nat Geo one about it the other day and the dedication and skill they have for relatively little reward is crazy. I know a lad who's over there now fighting in muay thai, got a total screw loose so would probably be avoiding him though.

Getting punched in the face the first time is a real shocker, remember reading a book on boxing that stated some enormous % of people quit at that point. Which is fair enough, can't say it's really the most pleasant experience. Put me off for a long time the first time i properly got laid out.
