They'll most likely head to Vice City next, then San Andreas and in the next generation we'll get a whole new city followed either by Liberty/Vice/Andreas quasi-sequels ala the last generation, or more new cities.
I did really enjoy GTA IV once I got round to completing the story, and I don't have the same complaints about the shooting mechanics or the driving that a lot of people seem to, but one thing the game really did lack was worthwhile distractions. Yes, it had cool little touches like a vast number of in game websites, tv shows, and even all the hidden packages and stunt jumps, but none of them were really fun for more than a few minutes, or became an obsessive checklist of targets you could only find with a map. GTA Chinatown Wars seems to have solved this with the drug trading gameplay in it. Bored of the story missions? Make a few grand peddling coke and buy yourself a new apartment. The PDA aspect is much better implemented than IV's phone, too, emails are much less intrusive than those phone calls, and they don't stop you running either, and it feels much more rewarding and dynamic, as the drug trade sees some products prices rise and fall all the time, so when you make a big profit, it feels good.
I liked GTA4 but it had loads of faults. I guess the main one was that it tried too hard to be realistic instead of fun.
For the next GTA I would like to see it include things such as parachuting out of a plane, or seeing a group of Elvis impersinators walking down the street, or hopping into a combine harvester and causing mayhem in the city centre. To leave these sort of things out because they aren't realistic is not a good excuse IMO.
As for the city itself I loved what they did with Liberty City in GTA4, but they really need to move out of the USA now. London has been done in The Getaway and the old 2D GTAs so I don't want to see london either. Pretty much anywhere that isn't USA or London and I'll be happy.
Gameplay wise they should forget about girlfriends or make that completely optional. The phone did also get annoying so make it useful to use the phone when you want something but without having to answer so many calls all the time.
I'd also like to see more focus on owning things. For example if you have a really nice car and you happen to crash it, instad of just leaving it and stealing the closest car you see I'd like to be able to use the phone to call a tow truck and then in a week the car would be delivered to my garage in pristine condition (for a fee). It would also make things such as a wheel shop or car modding become more useful compared to San Andreas where wrecking cars so often made spending money on them pointless.
