The NHS Depression Test

Just rummaging through the NHS website and stumbled upon this depression test:

http://www.nhs.uk/Tools/Pages/depression.aspx

Apparently we can now self assess ourselves in 9 questions (!). According to this I'm "unlikely suffering from depression". Good to know.

Lets see how we all get on with this (extremely simplistic) test...

It says I could be depressed and advises me to book an appointment with my GP. :(

Simplistic maybe, but it's the same (essentially) form that GPs will get you to fill out in a consultation. It also stops unnecessary appointments.

I'm not depressed apparently. Goody.

The questions are very direct and deal with the main symptoms of depression. It's not meant to be a diagnosis, just a test to get you to think about whether you're just feeling a bit sad today or whether you actually have clinical depression.

You don't really need this test to know if you are depressed or not, you should be able to really work that out for yourself. A doctor will use your PHQ9 scores though just as a general guideline to whether you need medication or counselling and as an indicator to whether they are working.
