Really? It's the first time I've ever heard it used as an excuse for being overweight, and personally I've never felt the urge to over-eat to store up fat. It might be something that we had in the past, but surely these days it's irrelevant. Even if the instinct is still there, you can hardly use it as a justification for being overweight or obese.


You're right, it's not a justification. It's not in our instincts to be obese, but rather to like eating fat.

Fatty foods are generally considered tastier and have a lot to do with satiety.


Basically think about it like killing a mammoth. You aren't going to kill one very often, and it's got an awful lot of blubber. You've been eating nothing but berries, nuts and what few little rabbits you can get your hands on for the past 10-14 days. Your body is gonna tell you to chow down on as much of that blubber as you can, and it's going to tell you that by making it bloody tasty.

There is an increasing trend in the US of patients telling doctors to stop telling them to lose weight and just "fix" them. :roll:

I wish I could get my LDLdown. The heaviest I've ever been was up near 12 stone 9. Back near 11 now but LDL is still far too high and I can't take statins. Bloody annoying.

Yep, walk every day for a couple of miles and up and down multiple stairs at work. Cycle three times per week at least ten miles (exercise bike max resistance as i cant safely cycle on road now due to eyes) and tone three times per week. Just don't seem to get it down. Eat me porridge and fruit too.

Do like chocolate though. Doh.

They're not talking about over eating, they're talking about what your body does with the food once you eat it. In simple terms, food = energy, your body wants to store a large chunk of that energy as fat so that the energy is available in the future if/when the need arises.

Do you do any high intensity training? Like when your lungs are really burning and you can only sustain that level for 30-60 seconds. Apparently doing some triggers lots of things in the body which are good.

hmm.. probably not as much as I could. when I was road cycling I would by working the very steep hills here. Now max intensity on my bike gets me breathing but i'm so used to it that I deal with it quite comfortably (didn't when I first started but the body adjusts).

Yeah, my understanding of all this stuff (which basically pretty casual, but I'd stand by it), is that moderate exercise is only really effective at maintaining weight and a reasonable amount of cardiovascular health. To really get a proper response or fitness improvements (so lowering all those health indicators), is bouts of high intensity exercise. A spin class, or circuit training once a week, plus your usual moderate exercise will do wonders.
