Well I enjoyed Nexus while it lasted. The idea of my next phone being sub £300 and brand new seems less and less likely these days, which is annoying since google have really shorten the time they'll keep my nexus 6 up to date.

Its basically exactly the same price as an iPhone 7.

Its not for me, but if you are in the market for a top of the range iPhone I don't know why you wouldn't consider this.

Apple is seen as a premium brand. Do people see Google the same? If not, will be difficult to sell at those prices.

Yes?

I don't really agree with the premise behind that kind of thinking. I think both Apple and Google are bigger than that.

If what you are asking is can Google sell a premium product? Then I think the answer is yes.

Death's Head is right, it has nothing to do with if the item is Premium, Apple do see themselves as "Premium" and their pricing and attitude towards new developments reflects that, they release new devices with very little advancement and expect huge prices from people because "it is Apple".

Google has a very very large following and is trying to emulate that and cash in on it.

It doesn't matter whether you agree or not. Another thing to consider is that if you want a phone that works with the Apple infrastructure, you have one option and the supplier can charge whatever they like.

If you want an Android phone, you have a massive choice.

Holy strawberry floating Christ I never realised how expensive these new phones were. Was just perusing the 5.5" model and even with half the memory of my 6P it would cost almost £300 more. :fp: And then I'd have a smaller screen, presumably gooseberry fool speakers and (imo) a worse looking device.

All the news was suggesting the smaller model would be more budget orientated but that price is far from 'budget' levels. Looks like I will need to look elsewhere for my next phone.

I just picked up my new cellphone, the ASUS ZenFone 3...

http://www.asus.com/Phone/ZenFone-3-ZE552KL/

Android is going to take some time to get used to, it feels so weird compared to Symbian, far less polished out of the box, like the system basics were just put in place by google and then they said strawberry float it let the app developers worry about the rest.

What's the best way to sync your text messages between your phone and computer?

I've never heard of anyone who ever wanted to do that. Why on earth would you want to do that?

I'm not sure who the Pixel is supposed to be aimed at. As a 6p owner I guess I'm the intended target market but one of the supposed selling points of the Nexus line was that those phones would receive OS updates quickly. With the Pixel Google have introduced an update to the OS but haven't said when Nexus owners will get that update. If I buy a Pixel this year will I be in a situation next year where the latest version of Android is limited to the 2017 Pixel while 2016 owners get to twiddle their thumbs for a few months? Compared to iOS its not a great setup.

There's no doubt the phone's hardware is superior in terms of processing power, RAM etc. the one exception being the camera, but Android is missing features that were in Symbian as of 2012. I'm sure I'm nitpicking here but it is a bit frustrating to have a shiny new piece of kit that can't do some pretty basic things which my old phone, which was from 2012, could do simply and right out of the box.

Well in case your phone is lost or damaged. :|

It's the same thing as syncing your photos or videos.

So Backup of text messages then.

I don't think its part of Android by default, but again their are apps that can do it.

Sounds like you're trying to turn text messages into WhatsApp.

What features do you feel are missing? Not sure if you've seen this yet, but there is an app on your phone called "Play Store". Not checked it myself, but this "Play Store" apparently contains features you can add to your phone. Sounds like BS to me, but worth checking.

This is not some crazy unheard of functionality, it's pretty basic stuff.

I know Android has lots of apps that basically cover everything you might want to do, but some of these things are pretty basic functions, and it's annoying that I have to download a third party app, that for some reason needs access to my location, contacts, all files on my phone, my tax returns for the last two years and a blood sample to back up some messages, a function that a phone from 10+ years ago could do right out of the box.

But whatever, this is the wonderful future, with everything online and in the cloud, thanks Google.

Based on what Google are saying, the Pixel phones are a complete change of strategy from the Nexus program. Google are using it as a means to offer their spin on Android with unique features, whereas the Nexus line offered quick access to the latest version of stock Android. 7.1 on Nexus devices isn't going to come with Google Assistant or the Pixel launcher for instance. This is Google directly competing with Samsung and Apple, not just releasing a reference device.

I was waiting on the Pixel announcement before getting myself a new phone, and the price has made me pause a bit. I've got a 128GB black Pixel pre-ordered for now though, but I'm going to decide whether to hold onto it or not based on the reviews. If it was just a new Nexus phone at a crazy price I'd ignore it and buy a Moto Z, but the exclusive stuff makes this more than just another Android phone.
