That's the death knell for terrestrial TV coverage of F1 in my opinion.

You never know, Bernie might be dead by then.

Or the teams might just pull their heads out of their ass and go form a new competition that's owned by the teams.

BBC have confirmed they are dropping it. Ch4 have picked it up!

F1 is in the toilet in the UK already it seems. Lewis Hamilton finished well down the Sports Personality rankings despite the strongest year from a British driver since 1992.

I'd be amazed if Sky pay the same as they did for it in 2012 the next time the rights are renewed. I can't see many options for the FIA as BT sport likely won't have the reach to satisfy the sponsors.

Channel 4 won't be showing any adverts during live races which is a pleasant surprise.

Thank strawberry float for that. It's a dealbreaker for me, no way I'm going back to the dark years of ITV missing all the crucial moments in races. I'd rather not watch it all tbh if that were the case again. (Although lately there don't seem to be as many crucial moments in races..)

I guess CH4 knew it as well.

Fact that Channel 4 won't be doing adverts is without doubt a positive. Just hope the rest of their coverage stands up.

The coverage is being done by Whisper Films (ex BBC Sports people) owned by Jake Humphrey and David Coulthard.

I take it ch4 have picked up the same contract that bbc had? So they will show a mixture of live and highlights.

Yup I think it's 11 live races and all highlights. Oh and no ads.

So not bad for terrestrial only viewers but the writing is on the wall unless Sky decide F1 isn't worth the money, which is quite possible if the spectacle doesn't dramatically improve.

Much preferable to ITV getting the rights.

I don't love ITV but it's not like C4 have good sports coverage pedigree. Some of their stuff has been woeful. That said if it's a production company Coulthard and Humphrey are involved with that's reassuring.

To be fair, they used to be good with the live cricket, but that is a decade ago now.

Have C4 picked up all the races or just some? If the latter then I will continue not watching.

All races covered by highlights and 10 full races shown live without adverts. So the same deal as BBC had.

CH4 are part funded by the licence fee aren't they, so I imagine this isn't really the great saving BBC are claiming.

Especially if the BBC have to pay a penalty fee for cancelling the contract early.

They can use the money saved to buy the new Star Trek series.

I feel like the whole sport could do with taking a year out to get its gooseberry fool together.
