Ah damn, I like Nico. Anyone else praying Jenson's back in the frame?

Ultimate trolling of Lewis there

Fair play to him. All the drivers on the grid who have just signed contracts are going to be so pissed!

Why would you put Button in the best car? He has been beaten by Alonso for most of the season and lucked into his one title. Maybe they will get Alonso...

It seems quite genuine to me and actually it does make sense. He was clearly shattered come the end of the season, and it has been a highly intense year on the back of a series of already intense years fighting with Hamilton. I think we all see how Nico has to really extend himself to consistently be at the same level (and a higher level) as Lewis and he probably couldn't see how he would be able to operate again at that level next year. Going out on a high like this makes total sense.

Surely Rosburg was also under contract? I'm sure Mercedes can basically buy anyone out of their contract if need be.

They will almost certainly have a young gun line up alongside Lewis next year - Wehrlein or Ocon will get the call up. Merc will almost certainly have some buy-out clause written into their contracts for next year.

Yeah I mean to be fair the future for Rosberg was probably what happened to Button so it's best to go out on top. Still, makes me respect multiple champions a whole lot more. We haven't had a world champion retire with the title since Prost in 93 I believe.

Totally agree. It has come as a surprise but it makes a lot of sense. My money would be on Wehrlein getting the seat.

Just said this to my boss. Hamilton will be so strawberry floated off with this

I personally wonder if Merc knew about this, and that it explains Toto Wolf's gentle tapping up of Verstappen...

Will he? Having to work next season with a world champion you clearly dislike and feel has only done better than you this season due to favourable circumstances. Or not?

I would have thought Hamilton would be fairly chuffed?

Hamilton knows he is better than Rosberg, I don't imagine this will have annoyed him at all. If anything it's a compliment.

If they somehow poach Alonso then McLaren are utterly doomed to spend eternity in the midfield like Williams.

Hamilton and Alonso on the same team again would be a literal car crash.

Nah, I disagree. Hamilton will have wanted to grind Rosberg into dust next season. Imagine being beaten by someone who then takes their ball home so they can retire at the top? Nah, strawberry float that. Hamilton will be pissed at this.
