Saudi 2034 World Cup: Why this decision should not surprise anyone

Saudi Arabia getting the 2034 World Cup absolutely stinks of corruption and bribery.

First there was Fifa's shock announcement earlier this month, bringing forward the bidding process for 2034 by three years when decreeing that the host country must come from either Asia or Oceania, and giving just 26 days for bids to be declared.

This followed its approval of the 2030 tournament being given jointly to the continents of Europe, Africa and South America, despite the dismay of environmental campaigners, thereby ruling them out of bidding for 2034 under Fifa's rotation policy.

Then - within minutes - came the Saudis' formal announcement of their bid, swiftly followed by the backing of the Asian Football Confederation.

Very shitty decision, but yeah, no surprise. It's like FIFA aren't even trying to hide the fact that they were doing everything they could to line things up for the Saudis to host it. Shame that these backwards countries are deemed suitable hosts, but money talks as always.

FIFA only derive their power from the fact that people continue to follow football in spite of their behaviour - why be surprised if they push ever further into corruption and abuse of power. Formula 1 remains just as bad.

I see no end - the sad fact is most of the planet doesn’t give a crap and is happy with bread and circuses while greed and evil grow. I’ll just sit in my house watching the amateur tiddlywink league on the internet, take that society.
