May have a go at repaiting it over the summer, maybe put in some new pickups, i duno.

Lemon oil should sort out your fretboard issues. As far as the electronics go, have you opened it up and had a look yet?

No, i haven't had a look because i don't know what i would be looking for.

This thread is bad for me, it's making me want to buy a new guitar

Just look for any loose wires.

Anyone ever done a kit build like this?

http://www.diyguitarshop.co.uk/kits.htm

They seem like pretty good quality. And I quite fancy 'designing' my own colour scheme for a guitar.

For years I've been wanting to build a guitar completely from scratch. However, I'm strawberry floating gooseberry fool at woodwork, so I fall at the first hurdle.

its not just the woodwork you will fail it. there's a whole lot of intricate details that most people will completely oversee when making a guitar, even if you know what your doing it will most likely sound gooseberry fool.

That's why a kit build is appealing to me. It will let me customise it to the level i want (colour, pickups, finish etc) and i will still be lefting with a usable, good sounding guitar. It will aso fullfill my lust for a new guitar, and i know i will feel proud when it's done :D

I've always wanted to make one too. Thing is, you need to good instructions rather than good workmanship in order to get a guitar that will sound good and be sturdy (both physically and in sound).

The guitar made from that kit will not be good. The fact that the kit costs less than a Fender Squire should be a good indicator of its quality. If you're just wanting to do it for fun then a kit like that is probably the best way to go; just don't expect a Red Special.

If you want to make your own guitar that's comparable to something Gibson or Fender would make then you need to put a lot of money in to materials, and that's obviously a big risk if everything goes tits up and you're left with £500 worth of fire wood.

I'd be tempted by one of those kits. Especially one of the Les Paul kits.

Seeing as it's a Mahogany body and maple top and a proper glued in set neck, you've got the base for a nice guitar.

This one has quite an attractive Spalted maple top:

Sure the Electronics, Tuners, Nut, Pickups might not be much good, but those are easily upgraded.
And for the price, it's pretty good value for a blank wooden canvas to work from.
Stick some Seymour Duncans in it, some Sperzel tuners and I'd be quite confident that it'd be a nice guitar to play.

I could buy it and be the test rabbit for it

Just remembered Warmoth!
Back before I had a disposable income, i used to wet dream over the Warmoth site.

http://www.warmoth.com/Pages/Guitar.aspx

They have nearly every guitar body shape availible.. and so many different wood options.
Time to wet dream again.

 I used to dream of making my own guitar.

I even took apart an old telecaster copy of mine. Sanded it down etc...But just like everything else I do, I lost interest. One day I'll finish it!

I second this recommendation. But don't do it unless you're seriously confident that you can pull it off.

Personally, I'd prefer to buy a guitar from a less mainstream supplier. At some point in the future I'll have an Eastwood Airline Tuxedo standing next to my Frankenstein-monster-esque Strat/Les Paul hybrid (self modified of course).

Right handed and with a Bigsby, of course. The controlled feedback you can get from a hollow-body mahogany axe is gorgeous.

I'd be happy to do one as well. We could have a joint blog showing our progress

Oh god! I'd LOVE to get a Jazzmaster body from them!

He did. Apparently it wasn't very sturdy.

Aye, it was ok for a week before the electrics simultaneously failed.
The woodwork was good, and it had a nice neck.
The natural tone never came through either, due to the extensive amp modelling.

My gear:

Ibanez RGR321EX

Line 6 floor pod

Digitech Whammy pedal.

I've got some more old bits and pieces but this is what I gig with so it's my main set up.

Could we turn this thread into the musicians thread?

I've played drums for going on 13 years now and I'd like to discuss all forms of music and instruments in here with you guys.

I know Buff plays drums too and I'm sure there's others.

So what does everybody think? :)

Good on you mate.
It might not turn out to be the best guitar ever made, but it'll be something you've made. And that'll make up for any irregularites in playing/sound quality :D

I'd still love to get one of those Set neck Les Paul kits... but I'm trying to stash away money for this Bike of mine.

Also, would anyone be interested in a 30w Line 6 Spider III?
I got it about a month or so ago, and it's a lovely amp. But I just do not have the time to play as much as I'd like. And when I do, I've got a little Orange Practice amp that sounds nice.

£120 (Includes footswitch). Cost me £179 a month ago. And you can have the receipt incase it breaks, still good for 11 months.

Mate, if I had the money, I would definitely have that off you. I have a 100w Spider 2 that is broken, which has left me amp-less.
