Google took a dig at that during their last Google Music press conference when it came out of beta. "Unlike other companies, we don't make you pay to listen to your own music" or something like that.

But they do make you spend weeks uploading it instead.
They don't upgrade it to 256kb AAC either, and this way Apple is able to monetize the artists for all those years worth of illegal downloads. Sounds like a worthwhile trade off to me.

You don't think AAC is better than MP3? Matter of opinion I suppose. And I was actually talking about the 256kb.

Sorry I meant to add 256kb :fp: All of my music is 320 apart from the odd iTunes exclusive song.

FFS. My itunes isn't supposed to touch my contacts when I sync my phone (syncing a phone just to add podcasts? What nonsense...), and yet when I checked my phone this morning, all of my contacts are gone. Not just that, but now the 'sync contacts' tab has been checked on itunes.

Nobody else has access to my PC, so it's as though itunes itself has decided to f**k me over

iTunes Match killed my 2 month old Macbook Air. Was uploading songs and then bam! Logic board dies. Got it fixed and then the WiFi doesnt work. Brilliant.

After lots and lots of annoyances (I live in Germany, so the iTunes Store is in German only...which I can't properly understand) it's now working on my Mac and my phone. Only problem is it matches 99% of songs, but for some reason individual songs on albums will be greyed out. Like the latest Foo Fighters album, one song failed to match...what the hell?

Very odd. Other than that though, it works quite well. I had 60GB of music that would have been impossible to store on my Macbook Air.

Where was this 60GB of music before you used iTunes match, on an external hdd or do you play a CD into Match without needing to rip it? How do you play tracks in your Match library, do you stream them or download as and when you want them?

I ask because I have a massive box of CDs (and loads of DVDs) I'd like to get rid off. I see the allure of going download only but not sure if I want to pay £24.99 per year for life.

I know what you mean. Well before I had a bigger hard drive on my old Mac, so they were alright living there. Then I put them all on my external hard drive.

If you upload all of your cds to iTunes, then save your iTunes library on an external hard drive you'd have your library in two locations. Then you could have iTunes Match scan everything to give you a record of your collection on the cloud. Then you'd be able to stream all your music to any devices you have.

The problem I had is that iTunes assumes you don't need to download or stream songs on the computer you first used. As I was using an external hard drive that I unplugged, I ran into a few problems. There was a way around that though, so now I can stream 99% of my 60GB of music on my phone and on my Mac.

How it works is that when you play a song iTunes will download the entire song to your cache, and you can 'stream' the song which includes fast forwarding to the end of a song without any lag. You can also choose to download selected songs permanently if you have a favourite album or playlist you always want access to.

In theory it sounds great, but it depends what you want really. For me, it's a good way to back up a lot of music I'm afraid of losing and a good way of having 60GB of music without taking up any space on my hard drive.

BUT, if your computer has a big hard drive, and you dont really care about having your entire collection accessible on mobile devices I'd say dont bother - especially as you have the originals with the CDs.

I want to start syncing my phone/pad on my imac whereas i currently do it via my macbook. I want my entire library moved over (apps and all) so i can just plug the devices into my imac and just sync there without loosing anything.

Any ideas? Home sharing doesnt work and its driving me fcking nuts :|

You can authorize that computer through the iTunes menu. There are still some limitations though...

Maybe do a wireless sync, then sync your phone on the new Mac, and manually load content such as music and apps you've moved across manually.

Why don't you put it on a external hard drive and sync across?

If not...

Don't forget to authorize the new computer as well. Launch iTunes and go to Store>Authorize this Computer.

This is the original thread.
https://discussions.apple.com/message/11527201#11527201

1) Without connecting your iPad to your laptop, start iTunes. Click on Edit. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.

2) Now connect your iPad to your laptop and start iTunes.

3) When iTunes starts, right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select Transfer purchases etc.

4) After it finishes transferring all your apps to your new laptop, right click on your iPad and select Backup your iPad.

5) After it finishes backing up your iPad, right click on your iPad and select Restore etc.

6) After it finishes restoring, left click on your iPad , then click on the Apps tab on top, and check the box next to Sync Apps, then click on Apply below.

If everything on your iPad looks good after the sync, go back and click on Edit / Preferences / Devices and UN-check the box next to Prevent your iPod etc. The only other thing you may want to check is if your contacts, bookmarks, etc. are syncing correctly now. If not, go to the Info tab after connecting and make sure you indicate which features you want to sync with what sources.

Make sure that you move your iTunes library from the old computer to the new one as well for all of your music.
Here is an article that can help you with that.
