81% vote for no confidence, then. That's a lot higher than the 70% that was being mooted yesterday.

Labour has 229 MPs, so the turnout represents 92.6% of the whole.

This means that overall, including those who didn't bother to vote (or abstained on purpose), 75.1% of Labour MPs have no confidence in Corbyn. Coincidentally, isn't that also about the percentage of the Shad Cab that resigned?

EDIT: Full vote details...

172 for
40 against
4 spoilt ballots
13 didn't vote

Never mind, there's another rally for Jerry tonight. Should do the trick!

According to the Guardian the Labour rule book means he can effectively ignore the vote.

Does he look like the kind of guy to go full Alpha?

He looks like my local meek vicar

This is effectively what he's been doing for the past several days.

Sophie Ridge (from Sky News) has tweeted:

I'm told Tom Watson & Angela Eagle meeting imminently to decide who runs against Corbyn in potential leadership challenge

Given Angela Eagle's utterly pisspoor performance in the ITV Referendum debate, Watson for leader all the way!

What does he think is going to happen? Does he think he'll go to the party, win re-election and then 3/4s of his MPs will suddenly think he is wonderful again? Labour could find themselves in an infinite no confidence loop. He is an appalling politician and from what I hear quite frankly a thoroughly unpleasant individual.

This is a complete no win situation for Labour. Either Corbyn goes and a leader is elected against the party membership's wishes, or he stays and the PLP implodes.

Corbyn statement

In the aftermath of last week’s referendum, our country faces major challenges. Risks to the economy and living standards are growing. The public is divided.

The government is in disarray. Ministers have made it clear they have no exit plan, but are determined to make working people pay with a new round of cuts and tax rises.

Labour has the responsibility to give a lead where the government will not. We need to bring people together, hold the government to account, oppose austerity and set out a path to exit that will protect jobs and incomes.

To do that we need to stand together. Since I was elected leader of our party nine months ago, we have repeatedly defeated the government over its attacks on living standards.

Last month, Labour become the largest party in the local elections. In Thursday’s referendum, a narrow majority voted to leave, but two thirds of Labour supporters backed our call for a remain vote.

I was democratically elected leader of our party for a new kind of politics by 60% of Labour members and supporters, and I will not betray them by resigning. Today’s vote by MPs has no constitutional legitimacy.

We are a democratic party, with a clear constitution. Our people need Labour party members, trade unionists and MPs to unite behind my leadership at a critical time for our country

I think at this point it's worth remembering that the hard left hate Labour far more than they will ever hate UKIP, Conservative or SNP, because it is "class traitors" who have failed to implement a glorious socialist revolution and lied to the working class etc. Cornyn's clinging on and destruction of the Labour party only makes sense in light of this outlook.

Well, this certainly fits the brief.

How can he possibly run the party (effectively at least) when 3/4 of the MPs have no confidence in him? Even the support of the party members doesn't seem enough to overcome that.
