The Olympic Wrestling Thread

So here's where we can post about the upcoming Olympic Wrestling, which I'm sure you'll agree is totally, 100% unscripted and real and gooseberry fool. Now this news is a bit old but I've just read it and I'm gutted:

Granted, Kurt Angle was a bit old and had been dealing with a recurring neck injury for a number of years, but I was really hoping that the FORMER OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALLIST would return to show a new generation how it's done.

Here's the schedule for events. Anyone going? :D

Would have been great to see Kurt wrestle at the Olympics as I missed it first time around. Awesome that he competed and won with such a neck injury.

I'm gutted, it looks like Justin Ruiz might not make the Olympics!

http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/sports/54012404-77/london-ruiz-tournament-chance.html.csp

Wrestler Justin Ruiz of Orem lost his only match Sunday at a qualifying tournament for the 2012 London Olympics, leaving him with just one more chance to keep his dream alive.

The former state champion at Taylorsville High School lost to Chan-Gun An of Korea — the bronze medalist at the Asian Championships last year — 1-0, 0-1 and 0-1 in the first round of the tournament in Taiyuan, China.

"Justin did not wrestle with much spark," national team coach Steve Fraser said. "He was a bit slow on his feet. He had trouble getting his hands locked. But finally, Justin turned him both times, but one second late."

Twice the runner-up in the U.S. Olympic Trials for Greco-Roman wrestling, Ruiz needed to finish in the top three of the tournament to both earn the Americans a place in his 211.5-pound weight division in London and earn himself a special "wrestle-off" against recently crowned U.S. trials champion RC Johnson for the right to compete in London.

Still, Ruiz has one last chance. He must finish in the top two of one last qualifying tournament next weekend in Helsinki. If he does, he will compete against Johnson in a single winner-goes-to-London match at a date and time that will be determined later, if necessary.

The women's 63kg freestyle is what I'm really hoping will be excellent. Kaori Icho is the current World Champion, can she make her mark on the biggest stage of them all, Wrestlemania the Olympics?

It's probably worth mentioning that Ichi has won almost every major event she's entered, including two Olympic games, in Athens and Beijing. Do we think she'll get her mat trick in London?

I think we should have vote, but only those who contribute to this thread should be allowed to vote.

I actually had tickets to this and the weightlifting events but had to end up selling our tickets.

I was quite looking forward to it :(
