PostThe one game backlog.
by Death's Head » Mon Jan 01, 2018 3:38 pm

For a large number of years it has sort of been a dream to get to a point where I am playing a game and not having a pile of games to be played after. Most of the time I end up with a backlog because I see something on offer and convince myself that it will never be cheaper. The reality is of course that the games always get cheaper and many a time I've bought something only for it to get even cheaper before I even start it.

Getting to a point where I can just go out and buy a game (or download from the comfort of my home) without the guilt created by my backlog would be a very liberating experience and something I want to experience.

But this will be tough, bargains are around every corner so a high level of will power will be required. For some of you, the challenge is not just bargains, but FOMO (you must have the game on release!)

My will does not bend to the need of getting games on release so my only challenge is to just not create a backlog because it is cheap.

So for 2018, I'm planning to reach a point where I am playing one game and have just one other game waiting in the wings. The next game will not be purchased until the current game is completed.

Anyone else think they have the will power to join me in this challenge? For those who learn to resist you will end up with just the games you really want and save some money on the journey.

That's kind of what I like about the B/P/C thread; it's hard accountability and has been a useful tool to see the kind of (what I consider) pointless snap purchases because they were cheap at the time which I then abandoned quickly (Clustertruck, Ziggurat, Human Fall Flat, Mr President! etc). I've also begun what is a seemingly counter-intuitive process of outright removing games from my steam account, not just hiding them, if they are things I will never ever want to play ever, however this is a slow process.

I think the biggest challenge is not topping up the backlog with pointless tat which then blocks you getting to the bigger things in it; a few weeks ago i went through all the short games I'd had built up over time, the ones that take one or two evenings to be done with.

There are a few things in the steam sale i've had my eye on for a while so I'll grab those soon, however I intend to do something similar to your plan, which is either play through or categorically abandon after trying out more of what I already have; which is better than things sitting there untouched at all.

I tend to only buy a single game a year and it's still too difficult to find the time to play it  I think I only bought Witcher 3 in 2017 and still haven't started it :fp:

I plan to only buy three new games this year. My back catalogue has gotten ridiculous, and I have some great looking games I need start playing and games I need to finish.

I may have two or three games on the go at any given time, including continuous play titles, but 2018 is my year for completing games.

I kinda know that I am never going to play all of the games in my backlog and I really want to cut out my ridiculous compulsion for buying games at launch. Changing circumstances may mean that I am now forced to do something about this rather than just talking about it.

I definitely want to reduce my backlog - there is a ludicrous amount in my Steam catalogue that has never even been installed let alone actually booted up and played!

That said I don't think I want to get to the point of only having a single game on the go at any one time. Most of my favourite times gaming have come from having 2 or 3 great games on the go at one time and being able to move between them when I either get stuck in one or simply feel like mixing it up a bit. For example Christmas '97 was an absolute joy - I got Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil, and Mario 64 all at the same time - such an amazing cocktail of gaming to swim in for a few months!

I get a lot of games from humble bundles and monthly bundles, so I tend to get a fair whack of games. I don't mind at usually $15 Hb deal and $12 on HM.

I have 49 games sitting unplayed, download and physical. Seeing as I beat about 40 games last year, it's possible that I could get through a good amount of them this year if I don't buy anything else.

A few months ago, I decided to bin anything that had not been played in 2017. It whittled the list down to 11

2 of which I am sure are still on the 'install' list because I opened them by mistake. However, I will stand by my principles.

Another two are party games so in reality the list is only 7 games long.

This post is exempt from the No Context Thread.

Cancelling my PS Plus membership will hopefully help me clear my (admittedly not very large) backlog of games. I think my total list of current games that I need to complete sits about 7. Not insurmountable, but some of them are massive RPGs that I just don't have time to commit to completion. First world problems my games last forever

This was how I used to be, Id be playing 2 game and Id have 1 or 2 more waiting to go in next. A combination of steam sales, humble bundles and much less time to play has caused the current backlog situation. I have gotten better recently, only getting a handful of games a year and making an effort to play the older stuff I have in Steam, but then I got a Switch for Xmas so it looks like the backlog will be ignored for the foreseeable future.

Not renewing my PSN+ either this year. Uninstalled about 15 games, a handful of which I only briefly looked at, so that's put a dent in the back PS4 back catalogue.

A lot of my backlog is RPG's that take about 300 years to complete. It makes me apprehensive to start them.

10 hour length video game campaigns have completely ruined me.

Death's Head - that's a very ambitious goal - report back in December 2018 and tell us your findings! ;) But it does makes sense to pursue. Too little time in 2017 meant I suffered from this backlog guilt! Sometimes it's great to be part of that first day shared experience but in the past I've too often bought a game with its premium price on day 1 and not played it! One Game Backlog could work for me as I rarely play two complicated games like RPGs at once as i prefer not to switch between different complicated control schemes. In theory i'm up for this as it might help me to play more.

But what do we do if are starting 2018 with a backlog?! Discounting my longlist I am currently playing Fallout 4, I have Yakuza Kiwami to start and Uncharted: TLL to finish!

Either play them or don't join me on the "quest for the one game backlog". I'm not including any "free" PSN+ games or bits from Steam bundles I got as part of something I wanted. This means that my backlog sits at 8 games in total - 3 PS4 games (Knack 2, Horizon Zero Dawn and Prey) and 5 PC games (Alan Wake, Cup Head, Quantum Break, The Evil Within 2 and Sniper Elite 3 - with the last 2 having the status "currently playing").

I can do this. :datass:

If your backlog is bigger that one (or even zero) then you're just throwing money down the toilet. Have a mental backlog then buy the games when you are ready to play them and they are at their cheapest.

Admittedly, I only enacted this policy a few years ago on Steam when I decided I was never going to play all my purchased game that I hadn't yet played, so now I only get games on sale that I know I'll be playing immediately. I never understand the people on here who drop fifty notes on a game on launch then don't play it for months.
