I've lost all hype for this. Next year is all about Uncharted 4, Bloodborne, Batman, Ratchet & Clank now. Shame it missed it's chance this year.

Officially delayed until next strawberry floating February :fp: No reason for me to get a PS4 this year, then, as much as I'd love to play DriveClub. The second half of the year is barren as strawberry float. Sony really were not prepared for this new generation were they?

Had little interest in this to begin with, the first gameplay didn't help that and the new gameplay doesn't either.

Destructoid preview -

The Order: 1886 sure is, uh, cinematic

Not saying we should 86 this order, but, hoping there's more to it

I finally played The Order: 1886, Ready at Dawn's upcoming PS4, monster-filled, alternate-London-history third-person shooter here at Paris Games Week.

I still really want to like it. I like a lot of things about it. Well, mainly its aesthetic, both the technical marvel and the filmic look. But I was kind of bored playing the game. Maybe it didn't help I lacked story context, starting somewhere a few chapters in. There was no emotional manipulation for me to care about our squad making our way to one of our members who had been pinned downed, a feat I only realized we were doing after I did it.

And I felt no tinge of sadness for the other squad member that dies--good ole What'shisname--after a little scene where you drag his bleeding-out-body into cover, firing a pistol at a few swarms of enemies on the roof.

There's also a strange bit of inaction in the room when cutscenes finally end and you're asked to find a way out. I was drawn first to a paper at the bar, which had a numbered map, and, if you press to flip to the backside, names, some of them crossed out. It didn't prompt anything, like a quest, or a cutscene. Context-less, maybe it's just a piece of environmental story-telling referring to early events.

Maybe it's a clue, though, an important piece of info that an interactive, attentive player can use somewhere down the line. That'd be nice, at least.

Then I walked around the small room, over the dead body, several times trying to figure out how to get out before a button prompt started a cutscene wherein we thermite burn through a giant metal stove or something that was (kind of) blocking the door (but probably could've just been moved by four people?).

Maybe something this cinematic and story-driven just needs is to be played in full. And only once. Maybe vertical slices aren't helpful. I liked the weapon you're given. It shoots out clouds of thermite which you then fire flares at to ignite. It was fun to watch the fire come to life in an instant and spread, though never out of control, because this is a tailored experience.

Sometimes judging the distance of these clouds was tough, though it didn't matter. I don't know if the cover-based shooting gallery was easy because it's a public demo meant for people to have a good time with or because it is typical and easy, serving to get you to the next set piece.

Quickly I changed my tactics and fired flare first, then thermite cloud. I tried to brain people with flares and then ignite their friends. Towards the end of the short demo I gave up on the shooting gallery, left cover, and just danced circles in the courtyard spitting fire indeterminately. That isn't what the game wants, no doubt, but I still didn't come close to dying, and it was a bit more amusing.

Sick of reading about that level now (they were showing it off pre-e3/Gamescom, no?). Newer previews of later builds would be nice, RAD.

Yeah, as soon as he said 'I like the weapon...' I knew where that sentence was going. Everyone else has commented on it as well, and in each case it's been like they've been scraping the compliment barrel.

In fairness, this sounds like it'll be a decent 1p experience that should be played and traded in as quickly as possible. Or bought on the cheap.

Hmm, all the previews for this aren't exactly promising. I just hope they're listening. If it wasn't so dam pretty I'd have given up on it by now, as it is, I'm still praying it will turn out to be good.

For whatever reasons, sinister or otherwise, the "media" has decided they don't want to give this game a fair chance, at least until it releases and they will have little choice but to acknowledge it's quality. I can think of a number of reasons why this is happening, none of which are based on actually playing more than 5 minutes of the game.

I'm reminded of a giantbombcast podcast from a few months ago. Jeff Gerstmann was talking about his time with the media demo build. He was positive and confident at every point, yet the other guys, none of which who had played a second of it, seemed to be trying their best to be negative, saying it looks like it's just a "corridor game", and many other cliches, a lot of which came out as "hmm I dunno......I dunno, hmmm......"

Jeff pointed out it's not trying to be an open world game it's a 3rd person shooter, it feels good, if you like Gears it's that kind of game. One of the guys said something like, "but gears has open areas". Remember this guy had not even played the 5 minute demo build. Jeff pointed out to him there are open areas just as "open" as they are in a Gears game, and gave an example of the town area that had multiple pathways. It was met with a "hmm...i dunno."

It's pretty sad really, as this developer has a flawless track record, and are one of the few remaining teams that seem capable or willing to make a big budget focused single player experience. For people that need open world choose your own adventure style games, stay well clear, for anyone else, this is one to look out for.

Clearly it's not that, since even the most pessimistic write ups have not criticised how the game plays or feels. It's all about it not being a different type of game, as well as them almost reviewing what they think the rest of the game will be. These patterns are easy to spot. The fact an early negative article on this generated an extremely high ammount of hits might explain why many "media" have jumped on the bandwagon.

I don't agree. The media can only base previews on what is in front of them, and the 5 minute demo looks awfully corridor-y, generic third person shootymans, with the action broken up far too much by cut-scenes. It may yet prove to be a great game, but what's been shown off so far certainly doesn't suggest that it's anything more than I outlined in my previous sentence.
