The last time I've played it was on PS3 and never had a chance to play the Left Behind DLC. So I have completed it today and it was brilliant. It was very short but sweet though.

Can't wait for the sequel now. :datass:

Well done.

I suck at the online mode so I don’t think I’ll get the platinum.

I was going to play this last night but then decided against it. I feel like I'm near the end and I kind of don't want it to be over!

Cheers.

The online mode is really simple and you don't have to play all the way. Skip some matches and do the three day challenges also keep an eye on your clan to keep some people (minimum 5) to keep it going.

Really? I can't seem to find anything to confirm this from a quick google.

Would be quite coincidental for Ish to have ended up following the same path as Joel and Ellie as well!

Sorry I was fibbing. Its a running gag on here.

And done!

In summary that was a bloody good game! It's definitely not without faults but the central story and relationship between the characters is enough to make it easy to overlook them. :toot:

I really like the fact that you are essentially playing the game as a negative character. Joel is like a full on "bad guy" who has done some terrible things in the past and in many respects continues to do bad gooseberry fool as the player controls him.

Most of the people you are fighting against in the game are guilty of nothing more than the kind of gooseberry fool that Joel has done (although I doubt he's gone as far as cannibalism!) and that is a nice contrast to how games usually operate. It's also quite refreshing that they don't go out of their way to try to either justify or condemn Joel, or anyone in the world really.

In terms of "problems" with the game I didn't really get on with some of the immersion breaking stuff - for example they give you a mechanic that lets you listen for enemies... but it only works when they want it to so they can pull some cheap jump scares and enemy spawns on you. Also there are sections where you are forced to eliminate all targets even though you shouldn't have to, the one that springs to mind was where there is a ladder that it will not let you climb until you take everyone out. There's no reason why I shouldn't be able to do that! Those enemy spawns are really annoying as well - if I'm in a clearly enclosed area and silently eliminate all the targets then it feels cheap for a whole bunch of new guys to suddenly just appear.

There were also just a few annoying bugs - the listening mechanic stubbornly refusing to highlight certain enemies regardless of the fact they were stomping around like a bull in a china shop, Ellie refusing to trigger her scripted actions at times leaving me to need to restart sections etc. Again, nothing that ruins the experience, but enough to knock enthusiasm back just enough.

Play the game again on survivor, it removes the listening mechanic entirely and is better (and more immersive) for it.

It's a great mechanic in multiplayer though!

Yeah it did feel like a massive crutch to be fair. And because it was so unreliable I did just end up ditching it after a while.

My main tactic for most of the game was to basically throw bricks at people and then choke them out!

Other than removing the listening mechanic what else does survivor mode do?

Absolutely. The writing is superb-he's a deeply flawed character who they don't try and portray as a hero. Rather, he's just a human, who has suffered huge loss in his life, just trying to survive in a world full of zombies and death. And in that context, they absolutely nailed the ending too. You can argue the morals of his decision but there's no doubt it was completely in line with his character arc.

You find less supplies, most notably shivs (which makes you really want to save them for the loot rooms). Human AI is slightly smarter and you take double damage. There are no hints/prompts as well as listen mode being disabled.

They patched in grounded difficulty above that which removes the HUD entirely and is more difficult still, but I've not played it.

I'm definitely tempted to give it another play through, and grounded or survivor is likely where I'll go - it's a little bit frustrating that they lock you in to your original difficulty for a New Game Plus option, though I can understand some of the reasoning. Slightly annoyed that I didn't get more achievements on my first completion - I felt like I explored everywhere but I obviously missed a few pickups and locked rooms along the way! Either way I think I'll dive into Left Behind next before attempting a second go.

Just remembered another slight annoyance - the audio logs implementation! Why the strawberry float they thought it was a good idea to lock you into the menu to listen to audio logs I'll never know. Just let me hit play and listen to it whilst I scavenge around and explore FFS! Staring at Joel's back whilst he hunkers down listening to Johnny Exposition is not that exciting!

Admittedly these logs are few and far between and plenty of other games are guilty of this, but it's still a bit gooseberry fool. System Shock let me listen to stuff whilst getting on with the game 25 years ago, surely it's not too much to ask?!
