In the past I used to care about the Oscars but there's not been all that much good stuff out in the last few years. Slim pickings. Best Picture for example used to be contested between many very good films... Not now.

Good to see that Get Out won something.

Sally Hawkins was robbed

I feel Hollywood needed a PC rousing speech in this post Weinstein era; McDormand definitely did that, whereas Hawkins might not have, I felt it was a political win.

Hawkins didn't even speak in The Shape of Water and still to convey that performance, amazing.

I think this years batch of Films all were great, so someone fantastic was always going to lose. Will Nolan ever get Best Director, I hope so.

I stopped paying attention to the Oscars when they nominated Boss Baby for Best Animated Film this year  :dread:

Glad This is Me didn't win best Original Song. Still need to watch Coco, though.

I stopped paying attention when I read comments from some of the voters which included “I didn’t watch 12 Years a Slave because I didn’t want to to be bummed out but I voted for it anyway as it was the right thing to do”. I’m paraphrasing but that was basically it.

Was never going to win best picture but it's great to see Get Out win best original screenplay.

Would have been a travesty for it to not get at least that.

I'm surprised it won anything when you've got (almost certainly white) voters saying shite like this https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/lists ... -2-1090472

Then I eliminated Get Out. It’s a good B-movie and I enjoyed it, but what bothered me afterwards was that instead of focusing on the fact that this was an entertaining little horror movie that made quite a bit of money, they started trying to suggest it had deeper meaning than it does, and, as far as I’m concerned, they played the race card, and that really turned me off. In fact, at one of the luncheons, the lead actor [Daniel Kaluuya], who is not from the United States [he’s British], was giving us a lecture on racism in America and how black lives matter, and I thought, “What does this have to do with Get Out? They’re trying to make me think that if I don’t vote for this movie, I’m a racist.” I was really offended. That sealed it for me.

I thought Get Out was a B-movie. I used to watch B-movies on Saturday afternoons and they were great — a lot of fun. I think this guy [Jordan Peele] saw Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner and thought he would turn it into a horror movie, with white people as the villains, because horror movies make money, and it sure did.

Good to see the point of the film went completely over their heads

I was reading something similar the other day about voters not watching Get Out because they didn’t deem it Oscar worthy. How is something even allowed if it’s true?

I didn’t think Get Out should have won best picture if it came to it but it had every right to be nominated and respected atleast.

Perhaps they need an award for the best picture that none of the voters watched?

Only films about black people that involve slavery are Oscar worthy

You might like a recent episode of Inside No. 9 (S4E5), it follows a panel deciding who should win the best actress award and the above quotes would fit in perfectly

I really felt that the Post deserved to win more. Out of the stuff nominated it was the best put together film saw and Hanks and Streep were incredible in it.

I read the article. I don't understand the choices that person made. That said I still haven't seen a few of the films.
