But if there is anything dodgy going on with Guardian owners and their off-shore practices, then this is one hell of a target they're painting on themselves. :slol:

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2008/may/03/1
Guardian Media Group, the parent company of the Guardian newspaper, has used an offshore structure to complete its acquisition of Emap's trade magazine and events interests, in partnership with the private equity firm Apax partners. The deal, completed March 20, 2008, involved GMG incorporating a new company in the tax haven of the Cayman Islands and integrating it with an existing network of Cayman companies set up at the same time by the private equity firm.

So I am assuming that means no one can be sure what exactly these (shell?) companies are up to? I'd be amazed if they'd be committing illegal practices... I mean, that'd be beyond stupid for a newspaper that loves pissing people off. But yeah, they're definitely being massive hypocrites with this. :fp:

Don't be silly, every single person of the left (left means anywhere to the left of Nigel Farage) has the exact same beliefs and opinions.

Did have a bit of a laugh at this...

ibtimes wrote:Jeremy Corbyn has urged David Cameron to consider imposing "direct rule" from the UK on the British Virgin Islands and other territories in a bid to crackdown on tax havens. The Labour leader's radical request comes amid a scandal over the financial affairs of the world's elite.

Millions of leaked documents from the Panama law firm Mossack Fonseca reportedly revealed wealthy clients were able to shelter their money offshore over 40 years. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) as well as other tax authorities across the world have launched investigations into the explosive papers.

But Corbyn has gone one step further and suggested the UK could take the British Virgin Islands, where Mossack Fonseca apparently incorporated some companies, under direct control of the government.

So he wants us to give up the Falklands or have a "debate" about it, but gain the BVI.

I'd love to put my money there, it'd be much less stressed out lying on a nice sandy beach than it is languishing in the shithole bank it currently resides in. :)

Panama Papers: Iceland prime minister resigns

The prime minister of Iceland has resigned - the first major casualty of the Panama Papers leaks which have shed an embarrassing spotlight on the world of offshore finance. The leaks, from Panama law firm Mossack Fonseca, showed PM Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson owned an offshore company, Wintris, with his wife. He was accused of concealing millions of dollars worth of family assets. A big protest was held in front of parliament in Iceland on Monday. Reports suggest the agriculture minister will be the new PM.

But they are called The Progressive Party and they are members of Liberal International. How can "progressive" and "liberal" mean anything other than communism?

Well I think he wants to negotiate a permanent settlement with Argentina, probably giving them some control of the oil fields rather than the Islands I'd speculate.

But BVI are already a British territory, he is just talking about imposing direct control from Westminster.

Both the Falklands and the BVI are British Overseas Territories.

I don't mind the idea of talking to Argentina about the Falklands, jaw jaw is better than war war after all. But the sovereignty of the islands is up to the islanders themselves, they overwhelmingly want to remain British and so they should remain.

From a quick bit of research, the BVI are a parliamentary democracy. Taking direct control of the BVI is a shocking idea, as with the Falklands my opinion is that the people themselves should decide how they are governed and that elected government can decide what financial system the islands adhere to.

Corbyn would be better of making a law that stops people shipping money off to tax havens rather than deciding to overthrow the democratic government of a group of islands. Sure they are small, but that doesn't mean they should just be walked over.

It's not a discussion thread, so "banana splits banana splits banana splits banana splits" is a perfectly acceptable reply. Excellent.

I am not sure I have ever called all Tories banana splits. It is a bit silly to group everyone together as a hivemind just because of the party they support, with the exception of those supporting extreme single issue parties (and even then I am sure they disagree on many issues).

I agree. I suppose it's just a handy shortcut, rather than having to individually identify everyone each time. Like describing Razorlight as complete twats is shorthand, when the one you're really thinking about is Johnny Borrell.

It's like describing all accountants as boring or all Bristolians as carrot crunchers.

Oh gooseberry fool, I just destroyed my own argument.
