If the drive is any good it should have a 2.5 to 3.5 bracket.

Just ordered the Crucial M4 with 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor (for the sake of £4 it seemed silly to fuss). Should be here tomorrow.

I turned my computer on last night, waited about 20 minutes after logging in (was watching some Youtube clips on my phone) and the PC seemed to behave as normal as opposed to be stupidly slow, at the end of night, rather than shutting down as normal, I just put it to sleep and it's so far working fine. I've backed up all the videos and pictures and important documents and deleted the incriminating stuff so thankfully won't have a massive redownload task to prepare for tomorrow.

Now I suppose I should sort out burning an .ISO file to disc in case the SDD isn't on the latest firmware.

This. You can get brackets on their own if not, or failing that you can probably mount it in an empty floppy drive bay if the case has one.

Sweet. Crucial M4 SSD arrived. Sticker on the SSD says "Firmware Rev 0009". No fussy messing about for me. Should just be a swap HDD for SSD job. Also strawberry floating HELL IT'S LIGHT.

Damn straight. Its just a tiny circuit board, unlike all the mechanical parts inside a traditional hard drive.

My 3 slot ASUS fatty graphics card completely blocks SATA3 ports. I can not figure out how to install the SSD into the case with the adaptors. They don't seem to have the screw holes located in the correct place. Half tempted to just have it dangle in the drive bay at the bottom. The only two SATA ports free are used for DVD DRIVE and now the SSD DRIVE. Quite annoying!

Right angled SATA connectors?

You might need to pull the graphics card out to get the cable in, but it should leave sufficient clearance to reinstall the card in front of it.

No chance. The ASUS 3 slot fatty is a right porker, even with right angled cables there's no room.

Would there be any danger to just having the SSD resting on the bottom of the drive bay or is that a recipe for an electrical fire/frying all the components in my motherboard?

If the circuit board was touching the drive case then it would short out regardless of where you put it. Its more for safety to stop it falling or knocking about that you'd attach it to the case.

Of course, a solid state drive isn't particuarly perturbed by movement. But you do want to get it secured somehow. The last thing you want is it coming loose and knocking into other components (like RAM) if/when the case is moved.

The ssd has a metallic enclosure so the innards aren't exposed but metal on metal with electricity. Not the best idea! Bloody case!

And bloody Gigabyte motherboard not placing SATA3 ports further away from the graphics card.

Think it through.

If the circuit board was touching the metal shell then it'd short whenever it was powered. It actually sits on risers and is held inside the shell, rather than resting in it. You can just drop the ssd anywhere in the case, its not gonna explode.

Letting it dangle then! Installing Windows now. Thanks for helping a worrying nub afraid of breaking his expensive adult lego.

I hope you've learnt your lesson about trying to skimp on the case.

I thought it wasn't the case that was the issue, but the ridiculous bloater of a graphics card?

He has a baby size case with two oversized graphics cards. (and horrible wiring)
